  • The Acoustic Guitar Bow from Guitar Hu is a fantastic bit of kit, taking bowed sounds and giving them to acoustic guitars and basses...
    www.etsy.com/u...
    Of course, the length of the bow is much shorter than violin, viola, cello and double bass bows, but even the short bow shown here affords massive possibilities to the acoustic guitarist and bass player.
    It does take some getting used to, but even a single note played with the bow will take you to places you’ve never been...

    What a great idea! I definitely need to get this for my acoustic.. now I really wish I would’ve bought an acoustic bass when I had the chance.. Thanks for sharing this Dan.. 👍

      The acoustic bass I bought was a “Guv’nor”. Only about £160 at the time. It won’t set the world on fire, but actually it works really well!

    Have you tried pointing the tip of the bow inside the guitar's body towards the bottom side (bridge) instead of towards the guitar back? Maybe that will allow the bow to travel for longer time and space in one direction so you get long sustained notes... I am curious if that would work.

    I get it now, -Hu like in Erhu. You sound nice, erhu bow is hard to control because it's embedded in between strings.

    I can see recording a track (punching in and out) to get some real fluid lines going across different strings. For $60 I hope it would last a good amount of time.

    • @DanBakerMusic
      @DanBakerMusic  2 года назад +1

      Yes totally. It’s quite an expensive gimmick. I do use mine mostly on my bass though, to get cello tones underneath my real violin parts...

    Vibrato on guitar absolutely can work laterally rather than perpendicularly to the strings - that’s how classical guitar vibrato works!

    • @DanBakerMusic
      @DanBakerMusic  Год назад

      Totally. I’m a violinist so I get that…

    • @JF-zv4oc
      @JF-zv4oc Год назад

      @@DanBakerMusic Cool, but at 4:12 you said "vibrato on guitar has to go up and down rather than along like a conventional fretless instrument " which just isn't true. Maybe you misspoke but the up and down motion you demonstrated is really more a back-and-forth bending of the string and this isn't normally classed as 'vibrato'. On classical guitar you would pretty much never perform vibrato this way (except perhaps in an extended technique kind-of-way). Not a big deal, just jumped out at me as being out of line with the otherwise sound explanation you give in the video.

      @@ReedemedServantOfChristJesusI want something like this, but same dilemma. This one or the Pickaso.
      The Pickaso needs rosin, so wouldn’t that screw up your strings? Also, the Hu has FOUR surface areas to make contact, right? Only one length has to make contact, correct? So it would seem like this would LAST longer.
      Also again, the Hu is longer, which allows for longer notes. Finally…
      Have you looked at how the “hairs” are attached? Possibly replaceable?

    • @ReedemedServantOfChristJesus
      @ReedemedServantOfChristJesus Год назад

      @@Ira88881 i got the hu and it works really well. And it takes rosin and YES it sill shred your strings if they arent coated (elixir for the win). Longer notes, bassier tones, etc, its pretty cool the hairs are replacable but im not sure how but i think there is a video on here how to do so.

      @@ReedemedServantOfChristJesus Okay, here’s the deal. I’m a nut:
      I’ve had a Takamine for a long time that I love. One of their low-end G Series, but the cedar type on this is, for me, a tone to die for.
      It’s discontinued, a GS330S, so arriving tomorrow is the exact same guitar which I just bought off Reverb, used mint. I wanted it to use for alternate/open tunings, so I always have my original one ready in standard tuning.
      Needless to say, I would play with the bow on the one coming tomorrow.
      I have never been a fan of coated strings although I can’t say I’ve tried them more than 2 or 3 times in my life. I’m an 80/20 kind of guy and I DON’T care about longevity. I’m an old retired guy and have nothing better to do with my time anyway than change strings every few weeks.
      So if I tried Elixir coated, which ones do you use? Besides gauge, are their different “types?”
      Also, considering my anal string changing habits, do you think the rosin would accelerate degradation to make a difference in my case?
      But now that I’m editing this, are you saying that the game changer here is the tonality, and it’s coated for the win?
      And thanks for replying.

    Any thoughts on using this bow on a classical guitar?

    • @DanBakerMusic
      @DanBakerMusic  Год назад

      It wouldn’t work on classical as you need metal for the bow and rosin to grip. Wouldn’t work well on plain nylon strings…
