I am more than pissed off at the fact that the RUclipsr got jail time for exposing their names, and not the people who actually MURDERED AND TORTURED Sanda
Yes. Plus the parents should be jailed for conspiring to prevent the course of justice, maybe including the presiding judge at their trial. Their punishments were ridiculous.
Mind you a man got years of jail time for retweeting the name of the cop who killed Nahel a 17 years old teen in France, while the cop is still being paid and people gave 1 million euros to his wife. There is no justice here.
Their names are as follows: Donald De Vinck, Alexander Garmyn, Phillipe De Geest, Jef Jonkers, Bram Lebleu, Jeff Slosse, Zazou Bindi, Owen Vangrunderbeek, Julien De Visscher, Willem Peeters, Maxim Peeters, Simon Peeters, Benoit Plaitin, Jerome Verstraeten, Pierre Onghena, Leon Lesseliers, Taras Moychan, Viktor Knevels, Arthur Geheniao, Maurice Geheniao, Quentin Walters, Arthur Versavel, Joachim Meeusen. This was copied from another comment to spread the word. Say their names.
not only is this messed up, but they stripped an immigrant family of one of their young aspiring incredibly TALENTED children. this is a huge sorrow, not only for the justice system but for a family's lineage and perception of what it means to be born without opportunity.
Justice system is reason he didn't get any justice in the first place this is disgusting reminder of that you will always be black. And especially in white nation racism will always be the norm of the day and don't forget it.
The fact that their punishment for killing a human being is doing LESS community service than what my high school required for graduation is baffling to me.

Hazing should be outlawed!! There was a death at my college due to hazing, a poor freshman died of alcohol poisoning. Our college shut down the fraternity entirely and now has a strict hazing ban, as it should be!!
Where I went to college (2020 so recently) the highest form of "hazing" was acts of kindness or a specific costume (had to be approve by admin) for the "prospects" and this was punishable by expulsion and house shut down
This is not a problem of status. As a European as well you can not tell me that our old folks are not incredibly racist. And some of us think as their parents. That is a fact. And not saying anything when those ppl make their comments is what makes them think it's ok. We all take part in this. Just like in bullying not just the bullies are at fault.

Thank you Stephanie for not shying away from the racial aspect of this case. People don't realize it's deeper than just being seen as a "black person". Racism also indicates NOT being seen as a HUMAN BEING because of your skin color.
There`s literally no racial aspect, despite what you and some other people try to make up. The severe hazing culture in that fraternity did not make a difference between skin colors, and they severely abused generations of white students, Sanda was just one of many for them. It`s incredibly sad that he lost his life, but he was not singled out for his skin color or ethnicity. They made the other two guys do exactly the same terrible tasks as Sanda, they also urinated on them and tortured them the same way, and they made them drink possibly fatal amounts of fish sauce too. The only reason why they`re not dead is probably because they were lucky enough to throw up enough of it to not get a sodium overdose. Those frat guys are monsters, but they treated their white recruits just the same way as Sanda.
@@haner2940 There certainly was! They used to call him several racial slurs which other students have witnessed and testified too. It’s also quite interesting that the one student they called these slurs and refered to as their slave was the one they essentially murdered. I don’t think you understand how racist these elite fraternaties are. Look up the case and you’ll understand why there very much is a racial aspect to this case. What you should be writing essays about is why that makes you irritate? Why does it upset you so much that people highlight and discuss racism?

Acid, a Belgian RUclipsr, is facing more severe punishment than the actual people that did this to Sanda. It’s a freaking disgrace and it shows how Belgian ‘justice’ works. Thank you for covering this!
This was a blatant murder and all they got is 200-300hrs community service and write an essay about the history of hazing. I'm glad this is getting more attention! Everyone deserves to know who those monsters are. They are not minors, they need to release names. Also, my guess is Acid will face more charges and repercussions more than those 18 monsters. Jail time? If Acid gets jail time, those 18 should face a proper trial without bias.
Considering the fact that people from Belgium say that getting on a bus without a ticket can cause heavier action to be taken this completely insane and its not even going to be on there record makes it even worse.
These are murderers. Plain and simple. They enjoyed torturing them. Imagine working alongside with one of these ppl. More likely they would end up being your boss. Monsters.

Fraternities and sororities are the dumbest concepts I've ever heard. It doesn't matter what they can offer you, the possibility of getting killed or traumatized just for a few connections and "friends".... And then keep that hazing as secret? It's absurd. Of course I don't blame the victim, he saw that as a necessity, but the whole concept is so absurd.
Hi alostkoi, I'm Steve and I'm a fratman from the Philippines. We have this writen rule that our kind of hazing shouldn't be degrading and deadly, instead it should just physically test our new brothers and how humble they are. I went through it, I never regretted joining my fraternity because some of the best people I've met are my fraternal brothers. Respect and solidarity are always required to be present whatever we're doing. I joined way back when I was in highschool, became a junior member, to avoid being bullied in school and also so I can easily protect my friends using the connection that I got from my fraternity. I get you, though. I'm aware that there are insane fraternities out there. Gangs exists and we just want to avoid being alone when we get into big fights or when we need more hands and minds to work with when working on serious projects. I got through college not being bullied by anyone, not even by crazy gang members. For me, the "tough guy" image is very handy but shouldn't be abused. The added confidence also helped me through a lot physical trainings as part of a football varsity team. I just gave myself another option when the going gets tough. I'm still an active member and I give advise to my local council.
Couldn’t have said it better! Speaking from my personal experiences with frats/sororities in America, they offer nothing but trauma and only cause problems that bring suffering. Frats in America have an insane amount of criminal activity, why would anyone in their right mind want to be anywhere near the proximity of that degenerate behavior
I agree. Every yr, fraternities and sororities get in trouble for sexual assaults, hazing, and deaths... what's the point of them? Yay! You get thru tests and pay fees to have a group of fake friends.
It does sound like victim blaming, he did see it as a necessity because these are wealthy powerful and influential people who would no doubt get him far with those connections

just to make this clear: people in the netherlands and in belgium DID care, just not the ones who shouldve cared. like the justice system or the perpatrators.. its been extremely heartbreaking seeing this case almost go cold. we held protests for them to find and expose who did this and they never really responded to the noise that was made about it
Supposedly students at the "top" university in a "top" frat and they don't know that sodium and alcohol and RAW MEAT could be lethal? This case was one of the most uncivilized acts I've ever heard. These are the sons of top personnel in the country? Lol.......
Something telling me that these killers are spoiled nepo babies who able to get away with anything (including murder) thanks to mummy and daddy's money
They probably think that if they can eat salmon and tuna raw, then they can eat other kinds of meat. So much for the whole "ivy league schools offering the best education". Besides their murderous actions, they've shown the world how stupid they are and that Daddy's money allowed them to get into the "top" university of Belgium😂
Violent crime becomes a million times more disgusting when the justice system does practically nothing in response. Civilized society feels like only a dream sometimes.
It’s all about the first time offender and trying to rehabilitate and keep people from going to prison, so that they will be tax paying citizens. Prison would be too expensive and make stats look bad.
You know what's really sad is the idea of a sorority or fraternity could be a good idea, but there are so many horrific stories and awful circumstances surrounding them that they're almost more troubler than they are worth. Imagine if someone were in one of these, didn't participate in the hazing of others, and then the whole thing disbanded, because a group did something horrific. That person would lose housing, connections, and potentially have their name tarnished by association. Absolutely horrible what happened, in this case, and Houses need better oversight if they're going to exist as organizations. A whole country has failed this hard working man. This case reminds me of Aeryn Gillern in how massive of a cover-up/brush-off it seems to be.
The only person I ever heard speak of a fraternity or sorority in my life was a principal and college kids. And movies. They ain’t all that. And please parents. No matter how tough life is please teach your children not to accept this shit. Say no!

I always had a hatred for fraternities. I don't know the ins and outs of fraternities but the hazing aspect is something that always got my blood boiling. It just seemed like an excuse to treat people in the most inhumane way possible. This was humiliation, this was abuse, this was straight up torture. What Sanda and the other initiates went through... I honestly couldn't imagine experiencing it myself. The only good thing to come from this is that the Fraternity was shutdown... but that doesn't give Sanda his life back smh.
Even aside from the worst aspects of hazing, there's all sorts of shit wrong with fraternities (and sororities, albeit possibly to a lesser degree). They breed things like rigid conformity, groupthink and entirely unearned entitlement.

As a Belgian who just found your video I give even more context: TLDR: no changes yet, so Sanda shouldn't be forgotten! 1. Years before there was a voluntarily charter across frats and uni's that many fraternities signed. Flanders (northern part of Belgium) has many youth movements, so fraternities could be seen as a similar vibe when transitioning into adulthood. Hazing is 1 stage of becoming an active member with a ribbon and is normally a day with challenges: lightly suffering in group would create a bond for life. But it's not intented to be straight up bully/torture day. Students knew which frats tend to have psychopathic hazing and which ones are completely fine. Every frat has a designated member (that members voted for the past year) who has to check the ethics and safety of the hazing process and has to check the hazing students. In Reuzegom this mechanism clearly didn't work (utter stupidity from this person/the top of the frat as future doctor, engineer or lawyer?!) or was intentionally ignored (murder, guilty neglicence?!). Mind you that this hazing somehow started with excessive forced alcohol, delibirate denial of water, a witness from university staff on the parking lot who said Sanda needed to hydrate/go to hospital and then was sent to a weekend in a lodge in the woods for more 'challenges' (imo horror movie setting and straight psychopatic torture) instead of just 1 day in the uni city... 2. The main fraternities are based on your study field (like med students, bio engineers, maths & physics,...). Membership of such a frat is enough to get book and party discounts: hazing is completely optional. Smaller frats could be based on which region you came from. Or a specific interest like Moeder Theepot (translated as 'mother teapot': tea parties for every student and strictly against hazing). 3. Biggest universities are in Brussels, Ghent and Leuven. Belgium is rather small but densely populated in cities. Many students travel by public transport to university. Students who have to travel further or who have a budget can rent dorms in those cities. A small part are 'official' dorms catered by the uni's, many are rented by private persons or companies. Uni's can provide scholarship for renting dorms. The prices in Belgium are also an issue, but not related to Sanda's case. 4. Reuzegom was a small fraternity at KU Leuven: mainly nepotism boys originating from Antwerp (prestigious city but with less prestigious uni, hence they chose KU Leuven). Sanda's case sparked the debate about forcibly signing the charter or abandoning humiliating hazing by law and also whether racism in Flanders is still underestimated (and thus Sanda's logic to become a member of a networking frat). Since we have 7 governments and different uni's they concluded they couldn't lawfully forbid signing the charter or stop hazing. Court also couldn't prove that Reuzegom was inherently racist (indicating that every member was part of this dynamic and is guilty in some extent). The public eye found the hazing members guilty but can't know for sure whether membership also meant implicit racism. The documentary 'Pano' implied that the top members probably were guilty of (implicit) racism, based on (deleted) Whatsapp and Messenger messages and witnesses of their public activities. 5. The father and friends of Sanda tried to get media attention to put more pressure on the guys to give them closure about how Sanda died and to prevent another extreme hazing. This succeeded by a documentary program called 'Pano' (investigative journalism) of the Flemish broadcaster VRT. The documentary reconstructed the hazing process and showed the holes in the Reuzegom stories, also implying their (parents') extent to cover up their tracks. The lawyers probably advised to remain silent as giving closure could be seen as a confession, leading to (severe) punishment. 6. Court gave a lesser sentence than the public eye had expected. Many people blamed the nepotism and class justice, since one member (not related to this hazing) had a high ranking mother in the court region that investigated Sanda's death at first. The trials got delayed as much as possible by the lawyers, which is legal but only frustrates the victim's family, friends and the public eye. As reaction RUclipsr Acid doxed many members of Reuzegom. He faced a lawsuit (where he chose to not have a lawyer) and punishment for also doxing members who weren't involved in the hazing which led to boycotting of the families of members. Though court faced critisicm again for giving Acid a sentence that gave more official fellonies and punishment than some of the Reuzegom members. 7. Some musicians gave a speech during their performances at festivals to support the idea that Sanda's case was class justice. There were many protests to show support and demanding change. 8. A few months before Sanda's docu the same investigative journalism team of 'Pano' had shown a student/political movement with extreme right/ neo nazi Flemish propaganda called 'Schild en vrienden'. Their leader Dries Van Langenhove had become part of the student counsil of UGent (university of Ghent), while many students hadn't known their extreme visions behind their normal looking student council goals. Their strategy was to infiltrate institutions and political parties and then to pressure their agenda. The leader got banned from university buildings but became part of the extreme right political party 'Vlaams belang', which had become eerily more popular despite also being racist. Several members of another Flemish nationalist party 'NVA' got kicked out when their membership of 'Schild en vrienden' became public. This documentary was fuel for the unease and further debates when Sanda's documentary aired: both Ghent and Leuven suffered from (implicit) racism and weak uni policy?! 9. Nowadays the father wishes to be able to mourn his son privately (instead of politics or media using the case for their own propaganda like distrust in court system and taking matters in own hands, conspiracy,...) 10. There still haven't been acceptable political changes or university policy changes, so Sanda shouldn't be forgotten, hence my lengthy comment. Many people think our governmental laws wait too long instead of preventing another disaster. 'Als het kalf verdronken is, dempt men de put' = 'When the calf has drowned, they muffle the pit.'
I’m also a Belgian university student. These “baptisms” happen all the time and are still ongoing. It’s crazy, but they never get severely punished because of the status of the student’s parents. Thank you SO MUCH for bringing light to this I LOVE YOU❤❤❤❤❤
I had "hazing" in France, "journée d'intégration", using the word bizutage is "banned" (as it would help...). Discussing this with friends, from uni (most majors stopped hazing), med school, engineer school, classe prépa... I think they really toned down for more than a decade now... I had a journée d'intégration 10y ago at university. No one was obligated to participate, it was stated multiple times before and during, some didn't wanted to do some tasks, and it was ok to everyone. Clearly they had a lot of imagination for the task to not endanger us. No alcohol at all. They were veeeeerry strict on rules, maybe the university warned them? University hazing is suuuuper rare now. Only a few do it (med, law maybe, engineer). (I'm not talking about the army, firefighter and all because it's another level...) You have the faluchards that still has a big tradition of alcool, gross things etc. But I think it's really dying down. They are the only "strong hazing" group I know of in France. I think it's a French law that banned bizutage that helped France to get it to minimum risks. But as tradition is very strong in Belgium, I don't know if it would die down.
I'm Belgian, most hazes are harmless. I've been hazed myself and it literally was just playing games and getting covered with eggs and mayonaisse and whatnot. Alcohol is banned, and the pledges allergies and disabilities are taken into account. They've even hazed a guy in a wheelchair (he got no legs). It's also completely consensual, you're allowed to quit whenever you want and tell the people doing the hazing when you're feeling sick so they can set you aside for a bit. But mine was regulated by my university. Sanda Dia's frat was one not bound or regulated by a university, and those are the ones you want to stay away from.
@@LittleSparklingStarsI’m happy that it didn’t happen to you but you can never know when it can happen or when hazing turns dangerous. I’m a college student from France and hazing used to be huge think up until the 2010’s. Now violent ones are much less commun but I’ve witnessed some that they were linked to faculties and the schools did absolutely nothing, slipped it under the rug just to save their reputation.
As a Belgian thank you so much for covering this case. This case has pissed me off to no end. Community service? Really? On top of the fact that Acid is facing a far worse punishment than the people that actually tortured and murdered Sanda is disgusting. Anyone saying there was no racial element to this case is just blind or a purposely denying it. #JusticeForSanda
I'm Belgian and like many others in the country, I followed this case closely. You covered this really well, but only one correction though, the youtuber Acid is not the one who brought attention to this case. The day after Sanda died, news articles started coming out. Because everyone knows the university, it was HUGE news all over Belgium. One media site even posted a full timeline of the hazing, people were disgusted. Everyone was waiting patiently for the court case, only to be severly disappointed at their sentencing. The Reuzengommers all being part of big, wealthy, influential families was a big topic of conversation too. Everyone was outraged. Only after their sentencing, Acid released some of the names of the frat members. It was news, but he was not the reason for this case gaining so much attention in Belgium (idk about international). The protests happened because of the light sentencing. The whole country has been heavily following this since 2018, Acid is irrelevant to most Belgians.
@@kirbygivens8223actually he was facing punishment because some of the names he outed were not even involved in the hazing and because he added them in his list they lost everything
@@mimijiji0423 not all of the doxxing pertained "monsters" though. a number of the reuzegom members, were not really monsters. their family members (parents, even little sisters) were doxxed as well. where do we draw the line?
I get so frustrated when people question if race was a factor simply because other factors were involved. Like you said, “Are you kidding me right now?!” Of course, race was a factor! Listen to what they did, what they said, etc. Yes, they’re monsters. No question about it. But they were racists as well. I seriously commend you for not minimizing the racial aspect of this horrible case.
Exactly, also it means that they got away with toruting people for years, just that they went harder on him for being dark and is the one that ended up dead.... but this isn't their first time torturing people
@@danielorlovaquinn and people used to think high education especially from elite universities would educate you about good morals, values, and common sense, enlighten you, pushing humanity to go further and thriving, make our planet to be a better place. Nope. Nowadays what they teached you the best is about how to be hypocrite. For a mere certificate, so you can be another brick on the wall, another corporate slave, a number in statistic. Not human.
Watching this case again to refresh my memory. But it quickly enrages me. He was just so sweet. You can look at the photos of him smiling and see he was a genuine guy who could’ve filled this world with so much good. Good that those frat boys will never ever be able to live up to. Greatness that they only wish they could achieve. May you continue to rest in peace. If there is a heaven, I hope I’ll make it to see you there. All my thoughts and love to his family
Boys being boys can be a crime too. As it was in this case. Not to mention they were adults! The excuses of the defense attorneys is inexcusable and sounds like a overindulgent parent who justifies all actions taken by their child as harmless fun.
So, if a “prestigious” school doesn’t act and let its name be tainted by a bunch of “students,”; then by logic, it is not so prestigious at all. This kind of U should be ranked as the worst to study and its operating license should be taken away by the government.
Yup, i am in this school and i can say, they put much effort into acting prestigious. Once you go there, you realise that money is all it’s about. The offered mental health support just quits, nowhere i can ask my questions abt the system, you need a degree to navigate the website AND they only have taken responsibility AFTER it blew up in the media, sometimes years after the facts happened (girl got sexually abused by a teacher and now, 3 years later, the students get mails, support and the teacher is fired, because it came into the news), it’s disgusting honestly. But still having this university on your job application gives you more opportunities
This poor boy’s family. First, robbed of their son. Then, denied justice for his death. I couldn’t imagine the pain and anguish they endure. My heartfelt condolences are with them.
Yes. Plus the parents should be jailed for conspiring to prevent the course of justice, maybe including the presiding judge at their trial. Their punishments were ridiculous.
YA right? If it wasn't wrapped up in the context of "hazing", it would have been purely abuse and murder, and not manslaughter. It should've been judged for what it is.
In Europe (or at least my country) it's the norm that fraternities are groups of misogynistic, racist, elitist, highly priviliged men who come from powerful and rich families (or aspire to get there). Decent people are very unlikely to join one. This case proves that... It's truly guresome.
Probably since Europe and I mean all European countries rarely ever call out bigotry cause Europe is so homogenous so things against poc go under the rug
@@UnknownLemonadeStand in the US right now it's the complete opposite. Just about everything short of breathing is called racist. It is cases like these that need more publicity. Unlike some of the incidents in the US, Sanda was innocent!
@@UnknownLemonadeStand What makes you think Europe is homogeneous? I‘m from Germany, the countries with the biggest population of the EU and 27% of people living in Germany are first or second generation immigrants. This story reminds me of a specific fraternity that faced so much backlash for not getting shut down after multiple SA reports. Way to go UNL in Nebraska
A fraternity at my school verablly assaulted and removed a trans girl from one of their dumb little parties, then erected a large banner outside that said "No tr*nnies allowed", (or something like that but the slur was definitely involved.) The only reason it got any local media coverage was because we held protests, rallies, chalked up the campus, etc for WEEKS. (We were also just fed up cause it happened closely after the school had subtly tried to change the housing policies to be more hostile to us, and that kind of thing almost always emboldens these shit heads.)
I used to live 2 street away of Acid, my kids used to go to school with him.. it's horrific to think that he can get in more trouble than the murderer, I was talking with my kids about that a few weeks ago.. unbelievable.. thanks Stephanie, I really love your shows.. love from the coast of Belgium ❤
I love how Stephanie isn’t afraid to call a spade a spade and speaks honestly about situations, especially when it comes to race. Also, I watch a lot of true crime pods.. it’s pretty much all I watch and Stephanie is the most sincere in her story telling. Her emotions don’t come across forced like most do. Great job! This has become my favorite true crime podcast.
i agree. these types of cases are that much harder to stomach when you can't see that the podcaster or youtuber is feeling the same way as you do when being told these stories. sometimes, when you hear so much negativity in the world, i need a reminder that there's many people out there too who hate the inequality of justice served and do not condone such acts. with stephanie, she not only validates our feelings as viewers but doesn't cut any slack on the perpetrators. so i choose to watch her channels instead.

a friend of mine was killed by hazing during his freshman year at a prestigious university (Cornell) and was left on a ditch alone for like 2-3 days. it was parents weekend and he was supposed to meet with them the next day, he was fed so much alcohol and other things that they said he had consumed what like 5 people would need to get plastered. no one was arrested for it, but many members lied to the parents for two days about what happened or where he could be. hazing needs to be illegal and this has given me a huge distrust of greek life among other things. Antonio Tsialas deserved justice too
Listening to this as a medical professional infuriated me. I can’t even explain how knowing what was happening to his body, literally made me nauseous. However, one bit of solace in this is knowing that more than likely, he was on autopilot and unaware of what was happening. Even down to eating the animals. It was more than likely just his body going through motions but not realizing. His last conscious thought was probably when he drank the gin.

As someone from the Netherlands, I am surprised to see you covering this. Just an addition; the incident got A LOT of media attention in 2018 and 2019 right after it happened (at least here in the Netherlands as a neighbouring country), not only just recently. International media started giving it attention in 2023 I guess, once the trials started. People got outraged and protested in 2023 because of the low sentences that were given. And this also prompted RUclipsr ACID to doxx the perpetrators (to make up for the light punishment) Having said all this; thank you for sharing Sanda’s story again. It makes me sad that such a guy isn’t with us anymore. As for Reuzegom, they are literal beasts, and it makes my blood boil. They never should have gotten away with such little punishment
Netherlands and Belgium show a veneer of civility but there's a lot of problems underneath. Netherlands has sexual exploitation of minors in the Red Light District and Swart Piet and all that. Secondly, Belgium too destroyed the Congo in the 19th century, and so many politicians and upper class people are involved in child sex slavery. We Europeans sometimes look at these countries and admire them but your marketers just create this false impression for everyone else of a supposedly civilised BENELUX.

When I heard of the treatment of the perpetrators, it was anger inducing. I hate when the perpetrators are protected so vigilantly, and shielded from deserved backlash. I feel like it adds more injustice to the original crime, and makes it harder to gain closure :(
Doxxing of perpetrators shouldn't be a thing in criminal cases. The least you can do for Sanda is to name and show his killers. Their life should be ruined either way, if not in jail, then at least in society.
this case upsets me so much bc if those 18 boys were low income african/middle eastern migrants and the victim was an upper class white man they would definitely NOT be sentenced to community service
This case is absolutely disgusting. Justice needs to be served! These 18 “men” should NOT be walking around with ONLY community service as the consequence. May Sanda be in peace now 🙏🏼
All this hazing process looks so humiliating to me. I never understood why people want to be part of fraternity or sorority, if their future so called 'brothers' and 'sisters' want to humiliate them. My human dignity will not allow me to pledge to sorority in case of studying somewhere where sororities or fraternities exist.
@@purrrrrrrplenot if you're dead and without dignity. But it depends upon you. Whether you value your life and self-respect or you value your connections.

Of course a bunch of rich and entitled white men dont wanna clean up after their party, but they'll clean up a crime scene. This case is frustrating. I feel so bad for Sanda's family and friends
This case just saddens me. I'm a woman of colour myself (African descent) and I moved to the UK a while ago. To think that for 13 years of my life I have lived amongst people who were similar to me in terms of race and culture and religion- I have never known racism. And when I moved one of the warnings my parents always give me is that I'm not like them. I should stay in my lane and not get myself mixed up with the wrong people because if anything happens and I was around, I could easily be blamed. I hope Sanda is in a better place after having endured two months of hell. May his soul rest in peace and may we all learn from this and grow to be better people...
That happens everywhere, if I was in Africa and white and some group did something and I was around, they could possibly blame me... it happens and it should never happen when you want to get ti tge truth no matter the race.
This is just horrible! At my university one of my friends went through hazing and instead of physical challenges they forced her to not talk to anyone for 2 whole months. If she was found speaking to anyone outside of professors or the sorority members she would be disqualified. Seriously these sororities and fraternities look like a breeding ground for psychos.
if that happened under any other circumstances it would be abuse, as someone from a country without fraternities i truly dont understand how hazing is legal when it seems to involve blatant abuse in so many cases
We don't have hazing where I live, but a welcoming event for upper secondary school. People on the second year (17 and up) humiliate people on the first year (16 and up). Usually this involves egging, flour and toilet paper. But recently there was a case where all the 16 year olds were peer pressured to strip into their underwear and stand in a line hugging each other. This all happened in a public park
@@ciciamanda. In France it's banned, you risk 6mo in prison and fine. In uni we rebranded it as integration days/weekends. It seems that university presidents and teachers are really scared of scandales and warn us ++++ not to do hazing, authorizing only games. People responsible for integration day/we were also scared I think, for mine they constantly said that we were obligated to nothing and could opt out anytime/task). I think it's a law that have at least a decade because it was already in place when I started uni.
I'm Belgian born and raised, and it shocks me that I only find about this story just now. As a (former) university student myself, hazing and fraternities are things I'm quite familiar with. So many of my friends went through our university's baptisms and while it did sound gross at times, it was never in a million years as disgusting as what Sanda had to go through... And the KUL is indeed one of the more prestigious establishments in our country, which added to my surprise. Now of course, over the multiple decades that this practice has been going on, we all heard about at least one horror story of "hazing gone wrong" ; I think mine was about a girl who died of hyponatremia from drinking too much water. But again, I am shocked that I didn't hear about this case, especially considering how recent it is. Shame, shame, SHAME on those young men and on everyone who tried to protect them and sweep Sanda's demise under the rug. Awful human beings.
Oh wow i'm also quite shocked you never heard of this until this video. I thought everyone in Belgium knew about this. Hhm shows actually how much they are protected. This Everyone in Belgium and even outside should hear about this, belgian gouvernement should be ashamed.
Im surprised I havent heard about this and Im from Eastern Europe. This is absolutely horrifying. Just shows how much those people are protected.. You are Belgian and you NEVER heard about this story?? No offence but have you been living under a rock? There even were (peaceful) protests about this to pressure the justice system and punish these people.
Much respect for the RUclipsr outing these monsters and much respect to Stephanie for bringing more awareness to this case. Rest in peace, Sanda - you deserved so much more.
Hearing him taking in deep breaths during certain points in the story is going straight to my heart because...same. How do people even think of these things.

Here’s an idea: if they aren’t gonna get jail time for their premeditated crime, how bout those 18 students be subjected to the same hazing that Sanda had to endure? A little taste of their own medicine?
No, I want them to pay 80% of their earnings to Sanda's family till the rest of their lives. I think money is the only justice that elites can recognize.
@@rezq9109 While I agree with you, there’s no way those elite families would ever consider paying this victims family a CENT. No amount of money will buy back Sanda. The family could find solace from the public name, shame and defamation of these monsters.
I mean they already did kind off the same hazing to be part of the group in the first place. That's what makes them enjoy it, it's like I went trough this so you have to go trough it too. But because racism is rooted so deeply, they probably became even more cruel to Sanda. But hey, they all survived the same thing right? So that makes them even more careless.
They said they weren't racist exactly because they already went through this themselves and everyone goes through the same type of stuff, I doubt they weren't even harsher on him though...

I think that they had no intention of admitting Sonda, and so decided they’d just torture him instead of subject him to the same sort of punishment that the other pledges endured. Then, fueled by drugs, racism, and mob mentality, they collectively decided to kill him

There was no hope of halting it without there being at least one amongst them with the courage and confidence to speak up at tbe critical moment and say what the fucckkkk alright time to stop this now. In Portugal happened a very similar situation, also a tragic student hazing. It happened during the night in winter at Meco beach and the students were blindfolded and put with their backs to the ocean, and for every wrong answer they had to give a step back, they ended up drowning. It’s very macabre and scary. It should be talked more...
Yeah sadly it still goes on at least at my school it does. I remember during house tours last year we would ask our guides which fraternity haze's and of course they all said they don't do that. Thank you Stephanie for not shying away from the racial aspect of this case. People don't realize it's deeper than just being seen as a "black person". Racism also indicates NOT being seen as a HUMAN BEING because of your skin color.
Or people not taking your pain or death seriously !

That's why a lot of black people started their own here in the US is different actually or so I've seen

Oh I’d be murderous. I want everybody
9. Nowadays the father wishes to be able to mourn his son privately (instead of politics or media using the case for their own propaganda like distrust in court system and taking matters in own hands, conspiracy,...)
What the hell it sounds like something going on in the worst prison torture of South America or Africa.

(I'm not talking about the army, firefighter and all because it's another level...)
You have the faluchards that still has a big tradition of alcool, gross things etc. But I think it's really dying down. They are the only "strong hazing" group I know of in France.
I think it's a French law that banned bizutage that helped France to get it to minimum risks. But as tradition is very strong in Belgium, I don't know if it would die down.
@@linapasteurit's so bizarre to me that something like that even exists

On top of the fact that Acid is facing a far worse punishment than the people that actually tortured and murdered Sanda is disgusting. Anyone saying there was no racial element to this case is just blind or a purposely denying it. #JusticeForSanda
Belgium is a very raycyst country !!!!
Maybe, but the fact that Acid is facing more severe consequences for naming the murderers than the murderers did for committing murder is messed up.

This is just torture. They should all get charged for murder.
No an essay is totally fine
As someone who lives in Belgium this is so sad and so unfair. I literally feel SO disgusted! I am glad that this is getting international recognition.
In Europe (or at least my country) it's the norm that fraternities are groups of misogynistic, racist, elitist, highly priviliged men who come from powerful and rich families (or aspire to get there). Decent people are very unlikely to join one. This case proves that... It's truly guresome.

I used to live 2 street away of Acid, my kids used to go to school with him.. it's horrific to think that he can get in more trouble than the murderer, I was talking with my kids about that a few weeks ago.. unbelievable.. thanks Stephanie, I really love your shows.. love from the coast of Belgium ❤

i agree. these types of cases are that much harder to stomach when you can't see that the podcaster or youtuber is feeling the same way as you do when being told these stories. sometimes, when you hear so much negativity in the world, i need a reminder that there's many people out there too who hate the inequality of justice served and do not condone such acts. with stephanie, she not only validates our feelings as viewers but doesn't cut any slack on the perpetrators. so i choose to watch her channels instead.

a friend of mine was killed by hazing during his freshman year at a prestigious university (Cornell) and was left on a ditch alone for like 2-3 days. it was parents weekend and he was supposed to meet with them the next day, he was fed so much alcohol and other things that they said he had consumed what like 5 people would need to get plastered. no one was arrested for it, but many members lied to the parents for two days about what happened or where he could be. hazing needs to be illegal and this has given me a huge distrust of greek life among other things. International media started giving it attention in 2023 I guess, once the trials started. People got outraged and protested in 2023 because of the low sentences that were given. And this also prompted RUclipsr ACID to doxx the perpetrators (to make up for the light punishment)

Netherlands and Belgium show a veneer of civility but there's a lot of problems underneath. Netherlands has sexual exploitation of minors in the Red Light District and Swart Piet and all that. They said they weren't racist exactly because they already went through this themselves and everyone goes through the same type of stuff, I doubt they weren't even harsher on him though...
@@jo-anneloosman4847 but they clearly didn't endure the kind of hazing that sanda endured.
UPDATE: By the words of some people from the Netherlands, this case was on the news. I probs did not saw it on that day or haven't paid any attention to it. Thanks for all the comments
this case was massive here?
Do you mean in the Netherlands? This was huge in Belgium!
@@Crochet_by_mic maybe in Belguim. But not here in the Netherlands.
@@muchella8517 Yes, I mean in the Netherlands.
@@angelamisaki I am literally from nijmegen 😅
I think that they had no intention of admitting Sonda, and so decided they’d just torture him instead of subject him to the same sort of punishment that the other pledges endured. Then, fueled by drugs, racism, and mob mentality, they collectively decided to kill him
Exactly. It created a Loud of the Flies scenario. There was no hope of halting it without there being at least one amongst them with the courage and confidence to speak up at tbe critical moment and say what the fucckkkk alright time to stop this now. Not even one. In such a large group of college kids. That’s both terrifying and incredibly sad.
Typo- Lord of the Flies not Loud
whenever i hear stuff about the whole hazing process it's always something deeply disturbing and disgusting and people keep saying shit like "oh that's just how men bond, boys will be boys"...no these men are actually psychotic, they need professional help and it's also terrifying that those same men come from influential families and go on to be influential people with a lot of power in our society. no wonder shit's messed up
I’m from the neighboring country, Netherlands. When I heard this news I was so shocked as to how corrupt the justice system was. Thank you for raising more awareness for this case. My heart breaks for Sanda Dia and his loved ones
As someone who is in a sorority in America at a school where hazing is heavily restricted, this case is absolutely insane to me
Yeah sadly it still goes on at least at my school it does. I remember during house tours last year we would ask our guides which fraternity haze's and of course they all said they don't do that. Semester ends in December and January comes rolling around and one of the fraternities gets shut down for hazing.
