Sam! I showed your reaction video to my wife....she predicted you'd react the way you did. She still tears up when listening to this (and she was in the audience lol!) She promises me we never sang it better....and I tend to agree. How many times have you heard 157 guys sing so quiet lol! This arrangement catches me between tears of joy and pride when thinking of my own son who I KNOW is following the right path in life....and hes ki da proud of his Dad too... I'm glad you enjoyed this one since it really hits home for a lot of the guys in the chorus.... "and I shall sleep in peace until you come to me... Danny my boy....I love you so.. "

This song has been in the VM repertoire for a long time. It was arranged by our long-time director, Jim Clancy. We recorded it first in 1980 for our album, "Here's To The Winners". We recorded it again when we did a joint album in 1986 with the Mormon tabernacle Choir. This version has a few changes in the arrangement to make it contestable in keeping with the Barbershop arrangement category. The song is based on a traditional Irish melody known as "Londonderry Air". It tells of a father talking to his son, as Ireland is at war and his son must go to serve his country. He tells his son to go and fight bravely, come home safely, and if he is not there to greet him when he returns, to come to his grave and say a prayer over the grave and the father will know that he has returned safely.
