Hi, great stuff! Just a quick question.
Do UAE residents need to purchase additional Omani vehicle insurance if traveling in their private cars? If so, is it available at the border? How much does it cost ?
Thanks in advance and keep up the good work 👏

Hi Naseer, thanks for watching and for your kind comment! That is a great question. Although we were tourists and had to purchase the insurance separately, from doing some research it looks like both tourists and residents need an "orange card" that is essential to prove insurance and to cross the border. We bought ours from the car rental company while in Dubai, and it was literally a big piece of bright orange paper. But you can also purchase it at the border if you have your own car (and therefore don't also require the car rental company's permission). But, we've read it can be a time-consuming process and cost more than ordering it ahead of time.
We would recommend first contacting your car insurance company to see if your coverage already provides this, or you can buy it for a period of time. Ours was 350 AED (about $95 USD) for a rental car through ejarcar.com, but it would probably be less for your own car. You could do your eVisa and car insurance online first and save time and money. It sounds like you need at least a few days to week in either case.
For what it's worth if you're driving to Muscat instead of the Musandam Peninsula/Khasab, the Hatta border crossing is supposed to be the smoothest.
Here is some more specific reading on getting to the Musandam area. Hope it helps! www.dubizzle.com/blog/cars/musandam-road-trip-from-dubai/
