So yh im a casual; I never played OW 1 and came to OW 2 late last year, played 2 comp games this season and 0 last season, only learned the difference between hitscan and projectile yesterday and so on. I’m as casual as it gets
And I think what higher ranked players don’t understand is, is that some characters aren’t OP because of what they do to YOU, they’re OP because of what they do to your team
Like Sombra is the most divisive character in the game when it comes to discussing her power level; lower rank players think she’s OP, higher ranked players think she’s bad. Higher ranked players will say that you “just need to turn around”, and I can do that so she isn’t a threat in 1v1s, but she has the ability to disrupt my entire back line and win 1v4s. So if my team can’t deal with her, my only real choice it to play in the back line all game and chase her down, which is especially oppressive when I’m on tank
Higher ranked players’ advice is always “just do this”, but characters don’t get punished anywhere near as much in lower ranks as they do in higher ranks. I can “just do that” and win/defend myself in a 1v1 setting, but my teammates can’t.
Like Genji for example is a sitting duck without deflect, and abilities like sleep dart and immortality field negate any flanks he’s trying to do. But lower ranked players won’t punish Genji after he uses deflect and most likely won’t have abilities like sleep dart on hand because they randomly used it earlier. So Genji can get away with so much sht in lower ranks
Bastion’s another good example because he’s rly strong but extremely punishable. Without turret form, he’s useless, but lower rank players won’t play around this and punish him. So you can reap all the rewards from playing him without much (if any) of the drawbacks, making him very good in lower ranks
I’m of the opinion that if you want to get out of bronze and probably silver, you just need to learn how to flank well. You can flank with pretty much anyone, including someone like Orisa. I got out of Bronze by flanking with Mei myself. Usually Mei is extremely bad for flanking due to lack of mobility, not having great damage for a flanker and being extremely vulnerable without ice block. But you’ll hardly get punished for these things in lower ranks, so you can get a lot of value out of flanking with her
If Mei is this valuable as a flanker, imagine someone like Som or Genji
Again, I don’t think higher ranked players understand that you can’t expect anything from your teammates in lower ranks. You can’t expect them to “just turn around” against Som or “just wait out deflect and/or use something like sleep dart” against Genji
It’s the reason why Bap,for example, is very mid in lower ranks, especially in bronze, but is top tier in higher ranks. In higher ranks, you can expect teammates to play in certain positions, to stay in your LOS, to not require constant healing and to actually use your immortality field
In lower ranks however, teammates positioning is unpredictable, his healing is too slow, teammates don’t understand that you have to aim with his healing so they unknowingly make themselves hard targets to heal, teammates don’t play in your LOS and he doesn’t have the mobility to make it to them in time, and for some reason lower rank players are allergic to the immortality field, idk what it is they just won’t stay inside of it
If the Casual perspective is Moira player having huge egos over brain rot gameplay, then things need to change for the health of the game.
In my opinion, if you don’t care enough about the game to learn it, you don’t have the right to argue on its balance.

The amount of swaps I'm seeing by these "casual" players, in quick play, where things are supposed to be casual, is crazy. It's basically every single game. Enemy loses a fight, swaps to cree kiri moira and instantly start stomping if the team doesn't also start swapping

I feel like I'm too casual to be called competetive player and I'm too competetive to be called casual player
I wanted to leave an actual comment after finishing the video. But I genuinely appreciate you trying to bridge the gap between casual and competitive players. As someone with like 10k hours in quick play total across all my accounts, I still have a pretty good grasp on what and why competitive high ranked players think are overpower and why, I just don’t like comp because I have a full time job and other responsibilities maybe also bec I’m going into my mid twenties but I don’t want to put up with people’s shit attitudes in comp either but I don’t want to stay out of chat and hinder my team so I prefer to just do qp after a long day of work and school stuff. Side note pls if you read this I’ve always wanted Winston to be able to have his jump reset on elims because he is my favorite character and I think it be funny what are your thoughts on if they gave him this ability
I think this would make him the most comically broken hero in the game lmao. Imagine he jumps in your team and just goomba stomps the shit out of you while a tracer shreds your team and feeds him elims. It's funny but he'd have to get a lot of armour/health nerfs to compensate for his improved survivability

I don't like when game makes something mandatory, but the amount of people that genuenly believes that Genji is OP and Hanzo is lucky shots made me believe that it should be mandatory for new players to play each of the characters at least few times with throwing them at random ranks just for fun (or imitate the level of play of different ranks)

I never understood when people used this as an argument it's really as simple as: Balance around casual players doesnt work for competitive players but Balance around competitive players works for casual players. Obviously it's not completely black and white but... you know

The thing with casuals is they will enjoy pretty much anything you put in front of them, it doesn't matter how unbalanced and cancer a game is they will enjoy it, but its the same vice versa. I agree with the sentiment of not wanting to invalidate their opinions, but their opinions change with the wind and they will unironically enjoy whatever they are handed, Dev's for the largest part SHOULD be ignoring their opinions on things like balance because they don't actually care about it.
What i want to know is why devs (not just overwatch) are so adamant about forcing casual and competitive players to mix with each other, casual fun and competitive integrity are rarely compatible with one another and it shouldn't be forced. There's a reason the competitive modes in halo games remove all the cringe OP weapons and leave in the skill based ones. Ranked and casual should be two fundamentally different modes with different balancing, forcing casual/ranked to be the exact same thing ruins the experience for both types of players and i cant think of a single game where forcing the two modes to be same has provided a better experience than when the modes were balanced separately.

im one of the mostly casual players
ive started playing in the start of ow2, and i can tell you my choice of characters didnt change at all since ive picked out my mains, i have around 800 hours with 500 of them on mercy, 100 on pharah, 50 on echo and every other char is the rest
i picked mercy even if she was bad because her movement is fun and shes pretty! i picked pharah not because shes strong but because shes fun to me and echo for the same reason, i like flying around and those chars fit it
i play in plat/diam and even here illiari to me is average, while a genji with a monitor is absurdly strong unless my team is aware of him. i watch a lot of your videos and when you say a character is strong/weak i internally say "really?" because here, they just arent. and when you explain why, it clicks because ive never thought abt it that way and in my rank or just in qp its once in a blue moon where youll see an actual team comp with characters that work together because people will play what thwy want to play and not switch and i dont blame them because im guilty of this, i have picked mercy into sombra/tracer because i dont want to switch just because someone picked anothwr here, i want to fly around and have fun
i have a pretty good amount of friends in the same rank and they share the same sentiment, my best friend plays kiri for the same reasons i play mercy, and when suzu gets any nerf and everyone is happy she isnt because to her she just wants to play the character as it is, even if in higher ranks these abilities are broken
i love mercy, some love junk and some love torb no matter what their stance in the meta is or what their teammates picked, casuals play to have fun and as you said, fun and balanced can coexist so hopefully someday this game will achieve that!

Like I just wanna play my favourite heroes (Genji, Venture mostly; Echo and Reaper can count aswell), get better at these heroes and eventually get better at the game (on other roles aswell). but then this one guy on the enemy team, who is completely dogshit and got diffed into oblivion swaps to Pharah and suddenly is a real threat and forces me to play either Echo or Cass, which is very annoying. Like I get, that a character can be braindead and it's frustrating, but forcing counterswaps is even worse and THOSE TWO COMBINED is just so fucking dumb
Like they were gonna talk about hero bans; if they happened, I would ban Pharah every chance I get
