  • In this episode of Red Dot Forum Camera Talk, Leica experts Josh Lehrer and David Farkas are diving deep into bokeh. Often an enigmatic subject, bokeh is the rendering of out-of-focus objects in a photo and is influenced by a wide variety of factors. They'll discuss what makes 'good' bokeh and how lens choice, aperture and focus distance all contribute to a pleasing background. And of course, Josh and David have brought plenty of lenses of various focal lengths, maximum apertures and vintages to demonstrate live in the studio.

Don’t know if this was addressed by other viewers but the “onion ring” look in 50mm Summilux-M Asph out of focus lights, the “bokeh balls”, is not due to a dirty rear element, it is due to the aspheric lens surface. Cleaning of the rear element won’t make it go away-ever.

Absolutely fantastic presentation. I watched the whole thing. The only thing I would request is to add more SL primes into the mix. All the best.

Thanks for this presentation. It can serve as a helpful reference, when people ask why I would own Summilux and Summicron lenses in the same focal length, as I do in 50mm, or modern and vintage lenses in the same focal length, as I do at 35mm. I am also thankful that some of the lenses that I own were shown in the comparisons, along with lenses I have considered adding, eventually.

Appreciate this episode! I love my 28 Lux bokeh and performance! But I hope the 28 Lux was also showcased for comparison. I can see one in the middle part.. ;)

We don’t often photograph close-ups of teddy bears and neon lights in the background. We might more often take photos of flowers close-up. It would be helpful mentioning practical situations like taking close-ups of flowers.

I always thought bokeh was a Japanese pronunciation of "bouquet"... as in "the wine has a wonderful bouquet". The intangible atmosphere of the photograph.

How come the palm tree and flamingo have softer edges than the Christmas lights, even though they are nearer?

IMHO, you should have started with some representative shots in your explanation.
