Little less of things I mention in next season will be much appreciated. That being said, I had fun iwith this season, love 13th, and her companions.
Joshua Berardelli I think it is because Graham and the Norwegian didn’t get over the death of their wifes. The doctor said goodbye to all his close relatives at the end of Capaldi’s era and nobody in Yaz’s close relatives died recently (as far as we know). And making Missy, River or a vilain come back would be against the philosophy of this season: searching for new. (sorry for my bad english, I’m french.

This whole series has had a problem with "show don't tell". Most backstories are conveyed through dialogue alone, mainly Ryan and Yaz talking about their bad experiences in Eps 3, 5 and 8, none of which we ever saw or see happen to them on screen so its hard to sympathise with them. In fact, Yaz's life seems all fine and dandy from what we've seen but she's just kind of miffed with it. Most episodes, but Ep 5 and this one especially, contain numerous scenes of dialogue bombardment with the Doctor taking way too many lines to explain something;it just becomes way too hard to follow and care about the story - this episode even made a joke about how boring its *central concept* was to explain! Even when something is shown, it's almost always followed up by someone saying telling others what just happened, like spaceships crashing in Ep 2 or spiders being giant in Ep 4. It's like the scripts are written for an audio format, but Big Finish has been making Doctor Who audio stories for almost 20 years with nowhere near the amount of dialogue of this series. Are most of these scripts first drafts? I'm not even a writer but I write my own stories as part of a hobby and still recognise when some of my sentences, paragraphs, expository dialogue or whole scenes need trimmed down or just cut altogether. If I can recognise that in my own free-time work, surely it should be a standard that the people in charge of Doctor Who are held to.
ok there was some bad stuff but I love the way it was presented in the beginning as another boring "oh no there's another monster of the week we have to defeat" episode but then the writer pranked us and actually gave us an interesting story about parallel universes and bringing back dead relatives. funny how most of the watchable episodes in this series have been written by anyone OTHER than chibnall though

Andrew Morton I should've probably clarified this further. I don't take a cursory glance and just run with the opinions RUclipsrs present to me. I browse the subreddits and engage extensively as I have done for the last several years, I engage in discussion with fans and detractors of the series all the time and over the course of that time I essentially come to understand the entire plot, the quality of acting, the cinematography etc. If someone like HMC makes a joke at the expense of a plot point, character or piece of dialogue I don't simply take it as gospel. I've disagreed with many criticisms people have made towards Series 11, others I've agreed with. I say "I haven't been watching the series" however that's not as accurate as I initially thought, more like through videos, critique, discussion etc - I've pretty much seen 80% of the series in its totality and could probably give a pretty detailed explanation of the events of each episode off the top of my head. There are people that simply follow the crowd because it's seen as the safer option, but that just leads to more collectivist bullshit, which is exactly the kind of shit that got this show here in the first place imho.
That's a fair reply and thanks for clarifying. I kind of understand your approach, butler me, I don't think that there's anything to beat actually watching something before engaging with secondary opinion.
People are hating on the frog. I appreciate that you liked the frog. You got the frog. This was my favorite Doctor Woke episode since Matt Smith. Political posturing aside, this series gas given us some real gems I never felt we got with the Capaldi era, outside of 10/10 acting from Capaldi and Gomez. Viva la frog!
While I enjoyed it, I can’t say it was better than stuff from previous series so yeah hoping next week blows me away as so far this has been a pretty mediocre series
Space Penguins I feel the same way... and i don’t feel it’s Jodie’s fault, she’s just preforming what the writers are telling her to, I can honestly say that Moffat needs to return or the show is just gonna get worse from here and get cancelled
4:22 Ryan's whole outburst about the father seems like poor, prescient writing, as if the writers wasn't sure people would understand that the father was being irresponsible once it was revealed that he was being tempted by his dead wife. What, are we supposed to accept that he was triggered and projecting his own experiences on the blind girl? Wouldn't all the aliens and threats he experienced the past few weeks have elicited a response more in line with beliefs of the blind girl in a heavily barricaded home. The fact that the Doctor, with the established points of "This house was barricaded against an external threat", "This door has three locks to defend against an external threat", "This child believes its father was seized by an external threat", and "There are threatening noises outside, most likely being made by an external threat", does not deadlock seal the house with the sonic, that she loves so much, also comes off as prescient. God forbid the Doctor take actual steps to protect a blind child when the script a few page later necessitates a pay off for Ryan's biased assumptions. Ryan being able to leave the house to discover an unestablished speaker makes more sense than making sure a blind child and a, slightly less in need of continual support, adult can't be assaulted by a monster.
So if ribbons is a gatekeeper for the antizone, and presumably the only sentient being there, who on earth was he trading with? What was he gonna do with the "tubular"?
I have an amazing and a great idea for Doctor Who. Imagine there's a pig called Mr.Pig who demands to eat and every time he eats the dimensions breakdown and reality itself collapses and produces a multitude of bad actors and scripts! It doesn't really matter if we chose a woman Doctor and she doesn't even need to act well because the very fact she's there makes this revolutionary and if you are remotely critical of her acting ability then you'll be automatically labelled as sexist. How about it Chibnall? Now lets talk about my fee!
I literally misspelled: 'Grahem's,' name, as: 'Greyham,' and some how, my entire argument for the bad quality of stories this season, became completely redundant! What am I even saying, I've got more important matters to do, like figuring out how to avoid copyright claims, on my: 'The War Games,' review! Ugh!
I'm with you. I'm thinking about not watching doctor who anymore, and that's hard for me because I love doctor who. Also, can I get confirmation that the Christmas special isn't happening? I know the specials aren't that good, but it just wouldn't be Christmas to me or my family without the special.
I agree I love doctor who but this series has made me really fall out of love with it - it’s been very poor and yeah they’ve decided to take away Christmas specials from us to replace with a New Year’s Day which isn’t the same - no one gathers around on New Year’s Day we all feel the sudden realisation that Christmas is over
Personally, the Antizone reminded me of that Star Trek episode “The Alternative Factor”. And, actually, coming to think of it, also the episode “The Squire of Gothos”.
Thought you were going to give this one a 3 or 4 not a 5. I wish they had a better reason to explore the house rather than "No smoke in winter? That's odd" Maybe some quantum flux particle disturbance or some other mumbo jumbo and the TARDIS brought them there
this was such a missed opportunity to bring someone from the doctor's past back... still a "good" episode, most likely the best of this terrible series... Sadly I'm kind of done with doctor who too, I didn't even watched the witches episode, and only saw this one after seing the titles of the reviews stating it wasn't that bad... maybe I'll watch the finale to have some closure and maybe the "new years" special to see the dead of the daleks... yes, the rumors are they are bringing the daleks to the special, nothing is safe anymore.
Well for nostalgia sake (and get those sweet views) there most be someone the doctor would miss... And talking about capaldi, even tho I hate Clara, it would have been really interesting if Clara was there, knowing everything about the doctor, trully missing him (her?) but she having NO idea who is this person that sincerily misses her... maybe it could have given the doctor some deepth... but oh well, it didn't happened
It was also cool how they changed the partings in their hair for the mirror universe but yeah, I’m not a frog fan. They could have used anyone from the Doctor’s past!
Am I the only one who's mind flashed back to the 10th Doctor facing the Devil, the Beast itself who claimed that he existed before time itself and the Doctor said that impossible, nothing existed before time, but 3 doctors down the line she now believes bed time fairy tales that she got when she was younger. Also know Witchfinder also made my flashed back to that same episode because, 13th Doctor says the devil doesn't exist... But she faced the personification of him... In the future... So technically the beast of before time is still alive during this episode. XD
@@PraxusUK sure but season 8 managed to lower expectations for Capaldi's Doctor when we know he could've been so much better, take an already liked companion and ruin them, and gave us some of the worst episodes of Doctor who ever including imo, the single worst episode of DW of all time in kill the moon. Season 11 has been between bad to fine, but its never made me hate the show
@@discogypsyfish9577 Say what you want about it, but numbers don't lie. Season 11 has done nothing but decline in viewership since episode 1. I can't think of a single good episode from this season whatsoever. Kablam came the closest and even that was pretty crap, and literally a postman pat reskin.
@@PraxusUK shouldn't grade something based on it ratings, but either way series 11 has rated pretty well, far better than series 8 did at least. I mean there haven't been any particularly good episodes theyre all just kinda meh with some fine ones and some bad ones. Whereas 8 is consistently awful.
The fact that you were able to relate this to red dwarf made me want to sub a second time. Do "Does it suck" with RD. It gives you ages of content, and loads of fans to agree/disagree with you
9:18 "For once the CG looks decent" Given the lack of animation of the frog I'm kinda thinking it was a puppet... I say lack of animation but what I mean is: it looks like a puppet, it doesn't even close it's mouth all the way, let alone moe in time with the words. The depth of field is so ridiculously shallow that it's almost asif they where trying to hide something, like the puppeteer... I kind of get that you like it because the original dr who was made in a time when puppets where the only thing available, but this has *nothing* to do with "good doctor who", it's just more boring exposition and excuses for not having to come up with e decent story. It's... more PC stuff, like the entire season has been. I guess I'm tired of the season and tired of hearing people complain about it.
6:40 Anyone going to talk about other than the camera brightening in the solitract plane, it's also laterally flipped the whole time we're in the mirror dimension?
Because of all the rumours surrounding Billie Piper's return, but I must have read it wrong because she is only doing audio books. But this was a wasted opportunity, because as he said in the video it would have had a greater effect on the doctor, and we'd probably get to see Jodie actually act.
That wouldn't really make sense. The soli tract wanted to be loved by parts of our universe. It got that in the form of graham when maskerading as grace, even if it was just for a very short amount of time. So basically, the symbolism for their relationship (the frog) is the closest this whole universe ever came to achieving it's only goal. Makes perfect sense to me why it takes the form of something that matters to itself.
I actually enjoyed this episode, but I have one flaw that single handedly ruins this episode. The single dad joining his dead wife could’ve been a great moral choice. Should he join the love of his life, or keep protecting his disabled his daughter? However, instead of focusing on this, they just ripped on this guy. They should’ve shown his perspective. Everyone has lost someone that they miss, so it would’ve been fairly relatable. The Doctor going out of her way to attack him was so out of character. I can’t think of any other doctor that would’ve attacked him. He/She is supposed to be kind, caring, empathetic soul. So why was she so needlessly cruel to him? It irked me so much that instead of fondly looking back on this, I resent it.
you know, I thought I would really like the new doctor but like you said, at closer exception it makes me miss David a lot more. you never know how much you love something/ someone until its gone.... AKA: i'm really starting to dislike her...
I don't know about anyone else but I would love to see you talk about a couple of red dwarf episodes at some point. Even if it was just like one video talking about a few episodes that you thought were some of the best and worst. I always like to hear your critical opinions on various media's because you see things with the perfect blend of analytical scepticism and personal opinion, whilst explaining why you think of it the way you do. Just keep doing you man. We all appreciate ya.
Can i ask why the frog in the episode had a very puppet look when it spoke. i understand it was an actual puppet but its like they wanted it to look like one by the way it moved
The frog scene was an insult. An uninteresting version of ENDLESS possibilities. It should have shown the Doctor what or who she most wanted to be with in the universe. WASTED potential.
I feel like I'm still waiting on the show to be good. Matt Smith's series was good from the very beginning. Capaldi's took a bit but the actor was infinitely better than the writing. And now this, I'm still waiting on it to be good. I'm still waiting on the Doctor to feel like the Doctor. Episode one was great, EVERYTHING else was completely missable. The Kazam episode is the only one that feels like Doctor Who
I really liked this episode, thought it was suspenseful with a few nods to horror and surprisingly well directed too, the bit where Graham discovers the mirror was a highlight. Liked the interactions between Graham and Grace, thought the sci-fi premise behind it was interesting. Then the frog showed up.
I thought the frog was the least convincing animal since the dinosaur invasion. At least if they'd set up that one of Grace's frogs was an unconvincing rubber toy frog we'd at least have had some reason for it.
i was so just not intrested the entire episode and then the frog just made me faceplam and i was trying so hard not to laugh. 5 is too high personaly it was laughabley bad about a 3 or a 2 for me
I realise it can be disheartening to be reviewing something that you don’t necessarily love or hate but please consider continuing because frankly these videos are part of my Sunday and it’d be a massive shame to say goodbye to them however, if you really cannot possibly make these reviews please keep posting on a Sunday cause it’s just really great
@@joshwhte8561 The frog looks like puppet animation with CG accents as far as I can tell. I might be wrong, but that is precisely what makes it feel MORE like something from something circa Series 11.
It seems to that every episode follows the same formula no one knows whats happening till the end when the doctor has her eureka moment where everything suddenly becomes clear. To be fair most episodes over the ten years have followed that pattern

In Ryan's defense, a roast chicken bears little resemblance to a live chicken. I'd be a little offset by a dead bird hanging in a room, too, but wouldn't complain about it later. I found it a little off when I saw a full roasted duck hanging in an asian grocery store.
I didn’t hate the episodes in this season but they aren’t like mind blowing I liked this one a lot but...tbh I feel bad for that universe it didn’t fit so it was thrown away and has been alone for all this time not knowing what it was missing just because it didn’t work well with others because it stood out
Jodie is the worst doctor, and it's not because of her Gender, Sarah Jane adventures was basically like having a female doctor go around earth and it was so good! Jodie is so bland in this role and just copy's Previous doctors, its like she has no idea what she wants her doctor too be
I saw that too. Yaz goes on and on about her training with children. I thought, "Well, then why don't you leave Yaz or why doesn't Yaz volunteer?" In fact, it would have been more powerful to have Ryan confront the deadbeat Dad and be scared that Graham was going to leave him for fake Grace. In fact, I'm not sure if it wasn't originally written like that. It makes too much sense.
Do you ever think about how jodie whittaker was given the script for it takes you away and said 2018 as "two thousand eighteen" instead of "twenty eighteen"
Graham was the only okay companion, but he also didn't get much writing for most of the time. Wouldn't be much next to the likes or Rose or Donna or Clara but next to the Doctor and the other two around him, he comes across as excellent.
*HAA!* Bowelstrek down! Stubagful down! Harry's Moving Castle... MOVING ON! This show is rupturing more cataclysmically than I ever could have expected. I mean... I thought people would hate Series 11 and all but... holy shit. It's really over.
I know you must've heard it a lot but can you do some of the older episodes as well, I wanted to see Blink in particular as it's heavily regarded as the best Doctor Who episode ever[The 2005 one] it'd be nice to see your take on it, P.S. Is it just me or does the CGI in the Matt Smith era look better than season 11's? Even though it was like 6-7 years ago.

Nah it was the shittist thing
Space Penguins I feel the same way... and i don’t feel it’s Jodie’s fault, she’s just preforming what the writers are telling her to, I can honestly say that Moffat needs to return or the show is just gonna get worse from here and get cancelled
But it wasnt terrible and had room for improvement. And graham.
@@joshuaberardelli9461 Moffat is not coming back and honesty I'm glad. He was showrunner for far too long.
I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one, I absolutely hated the frog universe crap. But oh well. To each their own I guess.
Ugh!
@@carealoo744 LOL! Lets not mention ham, you'll scare the pig away!
random actor's wife who died comes back. companion's wife who died comes back. doctor's wife who died. .......... oh a frog.
when ribbons tries to run away and Graham tackles him, in the next shot they're back in their original positions
I'm with you.
I'm thinking about not watching doctor who anymore, and that's hard for me because I love doctor who.
Also, can I get confirmation that the Christmas special isn't happening?
I know the specials aren't that good, but it just wouldn't be Christmas to me or my family without the special.
It's on New Years Day
@@Futures_End
Well, that's one less thing to "look forward to," I guess.
Oh well.
I agree I love doctor who but this series has made me really fall out of love with it - it’s been very poor and yeah they’ve decided to take away Christmas specials from us to replace with a New Year’s Day which isn’t the same - no one gathers around on New Year’s Day we all feel the sudden realisation that Christmas is over
@@matthewchurchyard8552
Yeah, wouldn't it be more more notable if it was still on at Christmas?
But then again, maybe they want it to go unnoticed.
Its about new years not on new years.
Eh, The Mind Robber is weirder and *WAY* better
metalmugen I like the first 2 parts, the rest is kind of eh in my opinion.
One of the many Atlantis Origin episodes, right?
Personally, the Antizone reminded me of that Star Trek episode “The Alternative Factor”. And, actually, coming to think of it, also the episode “The Squire of Gothos”.
I LOVE The Squire of Gothos!
Sadly I'm kind of done with doctor who too, I didn't even watched the witches episode, and only saw this one after seing the titles of the reviews stating it wasn't that bad... maybe I'll watch the finale to have some closure and maybe the "new years" special to see the dead of the daleks... yes, the rumors are they are bringing the daleks to the special, nothing is safe anymore.
remember that time when chibli said that no people from the past were comming back?
Pedro Fernández And who ? The doctor (unlike Graham) got over the death of all her relatives at the end of Capaldi’s era.
After season 11 are you gonna do the other episodes of Class, and maybe even some Torchwood and SJA.
It was also cool how they changed the partings in their hair for the mirror universe but yeah, I’m not a frog fan. They could have used anyone from the Doctor’s past!
THIS REMINDED ME OF RED DWARF TOO! BUT A REALLY CRAP VERSION OF RED DRAWF
XD

For real though, the best thing about this season has been watching your reviews afterwards.
Absolute shite. Worst series of new who hands down.
Series 8 disagrees
@@discogypsyfish9577 I don't. At least there were some decent episodes by way of "into the Dalek" and "Flatline".
This was one of the worst written episodes ever. The Doctor gave more exposition than I've ever heard from a character.
The fact that you were able to relate this to red dwarf made me want to sub a second time. Do "Does it suck" with RD. It gives you ages of content, and loads of fans to agree/disagree with you
9:18 "For once the CG looks decent"
Given the lack of animation of the frog I'm kinda thinking it was a puppet...
I liked that the Solitract wasn't 100% CGI
I generally thought the frog would be Rose
You must be thinking of the joke about the wide mouthed tree frog :D
Hello There if Moffat penned the episode it would’ve been Clara.
Or River
Reminds me of high school geography when my teacher did that 1:30
When that frog showed up, my hope in the rest of the series was gone
I thought u would’ve hated the frog, and yet that’s the one thing u liked!
5/10 is a bit too generous for this season of doctor who.
Chibnall made that fist bump happen tonight! Seems he was saving it for the season finale.
You missed a perfect opportunity for an Inbetweeners "ooh friends" moment
I love the red dwarf reference xD
The frog scene was an insult. An uninteresting version of ENDLESS possibilities. It should have shown the Doctor what or who she most wanted to be with in the universe. WASTED potential.
Didn’t mention that the slayer t shirt was reversed in the mirrored world but reverted back to normal when back through the mirror
The Kazam episode is the only one that feels like Doctor Who
Yay!
A red dwarf reference
There aren't enough of them in this day and age
As a Whovian, I couldn’t take the frog seriously
I really liked this episode, thought it was suspenseful with a few nods to horror and surprisingly well directed too, the bit where Graham discovers the mirror was a highlight. Liked the interactions between Graham and Grace, thought the sci-fi premise behind it was interesting.
Then the frog showed up.
Needs more Barry Chuckle.
Don't blame you! I'm done. Must admit the reviews are the only reason I still watch the show. Maybe I just keep hoping.
Spoilers:
There is a fist bump between Ryan and Graham next episode
I thought the frog was the least convincing animal since the dinosaur invasion. At least if they'd set up that one of Grace's frogs was an unconvincing rubber toy frog we'd at least have had some reason for it.
i was so just not intrested the entire episode and then the frog just made me faceplam and i was trying so hard not to laugh.

It seems to that every episode follows the same formula no one knows whats happening till the end when the doctor has her eureka moment where everything suddenly becomes clear. To be fair most episodes over the ten years have followed that pattern

Nice choice of music at 6:30 odd.
I knew how unlikely it was, but still hoped, that we will see River in that episode or at least any of previous companions
In Ryan's defense, a roast chicken bears little resemblance to a live chicken. I'd be a little offset by a dead bird hanging in a room, too, but wouldn't complain about it later. I found it a little off when I saw a full roasted duck hanging in an asian grocery store.
I wish the frog was just a sentient light flicker but yeah it was good
I didn’t hate the episodes in this season but they aren’t like mind blowing I liked this one a lot but...tbh I feel bad for that universe it didn’t fit so it was thrown away and has been alone for all this time not knowing what it was missing just because it didn’t work well with others because it stood out
Jodie is the worst doctor, and it's not because of her Gender, Sarah Jane adventures was basically like having a female doctor go around earth and it was so good! Jodie is so bland in this role and just copy's Previous doctors, its like she has no idea what she wants her doctor too be

just changing the frog from someone beloved by the doctor would have make a huge difference for good.

Please keep reviewing this show next year. I love your reviwes.
this was the best acid trip i have ever been on
I thought the Candy man monster was bad from the classic series, but the frog. It wasn't CGI but a puppet.
