    The choice of woods was spot on - the contrast really brings out the beauty of the design.

    Great vid. I just bought the Incra LS TS and all the extra's too. Including I-Box, 1000SE, Incra Master lift II and Incra Master Router Table for Table saw. Can't even remember all the models of what I got. Hope to finish putting it all together this weekend.

    Can you briefly explain why the task at 4:21 is done with your table saw instead of bandsaw ?

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  6 лет назад

      Sure. I'm essentially creating a tenon and the table saw leaves the cleanest cut. This could be done on the bandsaw but I generally use the table saw for most tasks if possible.

    Very nice video. How come you didn't add any dowels through all the layers? It seems there would be three major weak points between all the layers with only glue holding it together?

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks! The face grain glue joint is plenty strong. Dowels would definitely add some strength but not enough that its worth it to ruin the aesthetic of the mallet.

      Mads, glued long grain to long grain.... lots of surface area, that isn't going anywhere.

    Great build, friend. Ash is my favorite wood of them all, and I’d love to feel that handle. But I gotta buy you a dado stack. 😂

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  7 лет назад

      Ash is definitely underrated. Thanks Hakeem.

  • @ginoasci

    that came out nice.
    turn it into a soft face and contact cement leather on the ends so they don’t get ruined

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  5 лет назад

      I might make a new mallet with some soft faces. This one is a little too big I've realized.

    • @ginoasci
      @ginoasci 5 лет назад

      parillaworks: Hmmm could you please reply with the dimensions so when i make mine i wouldn’t make it so big, and what size is your next one going to be?
      About the handle......you put the concave part of the handle towards the head and the larger part towards the end.
      I was thinking of doing the opposite because when you grab the handle to use it, have you noticed that most of the time your hand is closer to the head instead of the end?
      It’s not like grabbing a regular hammer where you grab it towards the end so you can swing it hard.
      Do you agree, or do you grab it like a regular hammer towards the end?

    Did you do any experimenting to find the right amount of BBs?

  • @jeezee007
    @jeezee007 7 лет назад

    What kind of wood was the handle and the center section made from? And what were those metal ball bearings for?

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  7 лет назад +1

      Ash. The balls are just regular bee-bees. Supposedly the loose weight can cause a dead blow effect which gives you mallet a little more force and less bounce back.

      parillaworks oh wow! Ok thanks and nice work on the mallet!!!👍👍👍

      I think I used a wax and orange oil mix from home depot.

    Looks cool, doesn't seem very structurally sound.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  6 лет назад

      Thanks. In what way does it not look structurally sound?

    • @mp5073014
      @mp5073014 6 лет назад

      The finger/box joints are straight, not dovetail, and glued together. Then there is pressure on the finger joint, by the wedges and handle, pushing it away. Bubinga is oily, I was thinking the glue would eventually stop holding and a chunk of wood would go flying.
      I'm not trying to be a critical jerk, just thinking out loud. Is it holding up? I'm just curious. 😁

    • @mp5073014
      @mp5073014 6 лет назад

      parillaworks I went ahead and proven myself wrong already 😅. It seems like there isn't that much difference when the joints are angled. Still though, I would think dovetail is the way to go for this particular job.
      The video is dovetail vs box joint. They both performed about the same when it came to holding strength.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  6 лет назад

      I see what you mean. I don't think the wedges are exerting much pressure on the finger joints and those pieces are glued to the middle chunk anyway. I think a dovetail is only stronger when there is a real force working against the joint.

    Nice build! Do you think the BBs are needed? I built a mallet with no BBs and it seems to be plenty heavy enough for the chisel work I do.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  7 лет назад

      Thanks Wayne! Probably not 100% needed but to get the dead-blow effect, you need something loose inside. Also, next mallet will be a little smaller. This one is a bit cumbersome to use.
