- Question. Mary Poppins and Dick Van Dyke. WTF happened there? Gentle reflection on the compelling weirdness of Mary Poppins. Of course, it would make more sense to call this "Sparrows in the Clouds", but hey, ho! Rough demo only...

Mary Poppins shouts at clouds
Takes a paper bag, throws
Crumbs upon the ground
With her it never rains, she sings the same old tunes
Tuppence a bag, a song about a spoon
She’s singing down the sparrows from the clouds
Mary wants to see them fly
Dowdy brown plumage the apple of her eye
She sings out loud
Calling down the sparrows from from the clouds
Here she comes again
Mary Poppins on the roof
A crowd of RADA cockerneys
Sooty and uncouth
Against a painted backdrop
Greyest London Sky
Old dick Van Dyke
Gurns and slaps his thigh
And the dance goes on and on
Flat caps, clouds of soot
Such a catchy song
They sing it all out loud
Calling down the sparrows from from the clouds
Here she comes again
And the cameras roll and spin
So we can see it all
On the silver screen
Just a piece of whimsy from years gone by
Mary and her Gladstone Bag
She always makes us glad
Floating
Floating in the sky
And I’ve watched it all
More than a thousand times
Just a slice of childhood
With memorable rhymes
I love it when they sing out loud
Calling down the sparrows from from the clouds
This is a little gem, Ian. I love the observation & imagery. “She’s singing down the sparrows from the clouds” is a delightful hook and image and the lullaby rhythm & uncluttered melody certainly work for me. Don’t underrate this. Starting the day listening to this has been a joy. 💜💜
