Not mentioned enough but… in the midst of the ND game, Kirby’s dad was literally in the hospital fighting for his life and passed away the next day. And UGA was still competitive in the game but made mistakes you can’t afford to make. (The D played well and only gave up a short field TD and a few field goals).
With the receiver group leading the country in drops, the O line being more injured and regressing heavily in some areas (hello Ernest Greene where did you go?)… I think this was Kirby’s finest coaching job to date.
Winning the SEC and being in a position to contend for an NC is incredible given everything occurring.

I'm a Big 10 guy and its fair to say Georgia and Kirby Smart are at the top of NCAA football.
Georgia has been the most dominant team in the country the past five years.
Built a dynaysty with back to back championships.
Recruited and developed a lot of high end NFL talent.
Kirby Smart went head to head against Saban to get to the top. That proves he can coach and lead a program at the highest level.
That said, college football is in a new world with NIL and transfer portal.
Georgia will continue to be a contender -- and can win more titles -- but will be hard to get back to the dominance of a few years ago.

    • @asdasdasdasdasdfas

You may be right, but it's too early to make that call. As legal battles continue, we do not yet know how the portal and NIL will play out over the next few years. Assuming that schools will be allowed to pay athletes from the funds made by athletics, the top programs will still be able to pay, on average, far more than the non-top-tier programs.

UGA fan here, Kirby is one of only two coaches to my knowledge (correct me if im wrong) to have a National Championship ring. In fact, he has two of them. (Ironically, the other coach has two of them). Now this Georgia team this year was not great. They were below average. But to take that below average team through one of, if not, THE toughest schedule in CFB history and come out with only two losses, 3 wins against top 15 teams, and then beat one of those 3 (a top 5 team, the only team to beat them thus far) a second time to win the league. Yes he actually won the conference with this below average team. That is truly remarkable. Not too many coaches could do that. I, for one, don't know how he did this. Kirby is the best coach in CFB. But he has to learn to adapt to the new RIDICULOUS NIL/transfer portal format if he is to continue to be successful, and i think he is poised to do so.

I hear you. Before NIL/Portal or even at the very beginning of it, Georgia could recruit and retain talent 3/4 deep at every position. You add OC Monken with his NFL resume and you get back-2-back Natties. Now, with NIL/Portal in full speed, talented players are not willing to wait 2 years for their turn to play. They get bought and hired away while waiting. Georgia will never likely have the collection of talent we had in 2021-2022 ever again because of NIL/Portal. Moreover, OC Bobo is a decent college level coach but he likes to keep his play calling simple and that sometimes become predictive/obvious by really good opposing team's DC staff. They can pick out tendencies and patterns... The best example is how Georgia O-Line was put on skates by Notre Dame's DC Golden (he has NFL resume). He took what Ole Miss did against Georgia (using stunt technique) and added Mesh Gap Assignments typically used in NFL. Georgia O-Line could not just "line up" and attack using its bigger/heavier bodies. This shows the upper ceiling of OC Bobo and the fact that having more talent at the O-line does not really help when opposing team can out-scheme you.

Georgia should probably move down to Division II as I'm not sure if they can even win a Power 4 game again. All joking aside, in spite of what some people are saying on here, Georgia did not have an average or below average team, they had an above average team. Still a lot of talent, just not as talented overall as the national championship teams. They still played at a very high level but when your margin for error is smaller then you have years like this where just a few injuries, a bit of untimely luck, and you have 3 losses. It's actually a sign of a program that still had a very good year and is in good shape. The hardest part for Kirby will be two things, does he continue to adapt and replacing coaches. Saban was incredible because he kept losing coaches, replaced them, and stayed successful even though not every hire was a home run and as you mentioned he was always willing to adapt. He hated it but did it anyways. I'm sure Kirby saw that under Saban and now we get to see how good he is at it. He's won two national championships, he has a reputation as a guy who coaches players well, the money Georgia has, I think he'll easily be able to attract top coaches, it's more of picking the right ones and I'm sure he'll get at least a few correct. Will he be stubborn and less adaptable? We're about to find out but as of now, still the best coach in college football until someone proves otherwise and I think he's easily #1 right now.

DAWGS fan here. The definition of luck is when opportunity and preparation meet. Ohio St. missing a field goal wasn't luck. It was their lack of preparation and UGA's opportunity to take advantage of it that led to the win. As a UGA supporter, I'm very happy with Kirby, but I am quick to point out that he's not in a class of his own as there are several head coaches right there with him. To climb to the top of the mountain in college football is a brutal and all-consuming endeavor for a school, but to remain there is damn near impossible. Alabama's past dominance is a rare occurrence. To put it in simpler terms, just look at Ohio St. Who wouldn't trade their program's record with Ohio St the past 54 years, and yet they only have 2 national championships in that span? The landscape of college football is drastically changing by the day becoming even more complicated and competitive than ever before. With coaches like Marcus Freeman and Sherrone Moore, Ryan Day, Kenny Dillingham, and a lot of up-and-coming FCS coaches on the horizon, I find it hard to name a top coach but would definitely consider Kirby Smart to be in the conversation. Best of luck to all the remaining teams.

Notre Dame used Stunt techniques used by Ole Miss against GA and added Mesh Gap assignment technique often used in NFL. Georgia's bigger/heavier O-Line could not just line up and attack... they were put on skates the whole first half. Top ranked recruiting class this year with OL that's as good or better stepping up. Probably the best WR room UGA has had in years next year and an amazing set of tight ends. We will NEVER have another Brock Bowers. But we will be in the playoff next year and in the hunt for the SEC title again.

Georgia O-Line having bigger/heavier bodies did not provide an advantage against NFL level schemes in defeating the GA O-Line. DC Golden took what Ole Miss did against GA, using stunt techniques and added NFL Mesh Gap assignments on top of that and turned the dial up to 11. That was why we could not run or pass much of the game.

It remains to be seen if old-style college football coaches will successfully adapt to the new paradigm, semi-pro football. The talent coming into colleges today is self-centered, profit-oriented kids who are not team-oriented but me-oriented. In college football, the players were more amenable to coalescing as team players. Today's players have an attitude that if they can't get what they want now they will just jump in the transfer portal for more money and recognition.

OC Bobo is a decent COLLEGE level coach but he has tendencies and patterns that opposing DC staff can pick out to use against Georgia (you can guess a few things Bobo likes). Also, Notre Dame DC staff has NFL resume coach (DC Golden) and it showed up in how Notre Dame defense put Georgia O-Line on skates the entire first half. Notre Dame Defense was the one doing all the HUNTING on dawgs. We need coaches with NFL resumes like we used to have with OC Monken. Bobo has a limited ceiling on what he can do and against NFL level DC coaches in college ball, Bobo is at a disadvantage. Georgia has more talent on roster but with less than elite coaching, the NIL/Portal takes away the roster advantage so we need better coaching to out-scheme the other teams in 2025.

There is more to it than that for Georgia's performance in 2024 but you're not wrong. Georgia has the NIL budget to be top 5 every year even with NIL/TP but the issue - in my opinion - is the coaching. With having talent stacked 3/4 deep on the roster every year before NIL/TP, having decent college level coaching was good enough to win. With NIL/TP, even if we have 20 Million NIL budget, our coaching is not elite to compete. College teams are hiring coaches with NFL resumes now and OC Bobo is decent college coach but not elite enough to complete with NFL coaches playing at college level. Notre Dame DC Golden beat OC Bobo at LOS all game long. I saw it clearly.
