- Today we knock out 99% of the bow detail and assembly. Then we tackle some of the finer points of the railing.

The detail set I am using is from Pontos, which may be hard to find these days.... Just keep checking Amazon to see if one becomes available.

Anyone know why so many of us enjoy watching this particular build?
Simple...
As everybody knows, "Missouri loves company".
Don't know about others but that was far from boring Great Job so far Ben
Thanks Neil. I guess I just think some parts of the build are interesting and other parts are just necessary.
@@TheMidwestModelShop I don't like commenting that much Ben but I and I am sure other modelers really do appreciate the time and effort that guys like yourself do to help the community. Thanks for all you do and I am an avid follower.
To me doesn’t matter how exiting the vid is, I love watching this incredible build come together 😊
Well I must be hard core, because I found it just as interesting as any other part! Stanton overload!!! Yikes! Better you then me LOL!! As always looks fantastic!!!👍😎⭐🇺🇲
That hatch in the front... now it’s the Mirror Universe Missouri!
Life first. Glad to see the work play balance. Thanks for the video Ben!
I really LOVE that JINGLE
I was in the Navy, on an aircraft carrier, and the whole time I was in there, never fired one gun! Not one! I almost guaranty if I had been on one of these I would have! So many guns! Real guns! Manly guns!
In boot camp, I had to go to medical for my feet during the target shooting with the .45's which were actually .22's a buddy informed me.
Love your work/video's.
Pozer714 Knew a navy guy who actually fired some practice rounds on the Phalanx system ( different ship). He said they dialed up the sensitivity too far once and turned a seagull into a pink cloud...
.22's arent't the best... but then again you don't need full blown 5.56 NATO rounds JUST for practice
That detail sure brings the bow alive. All your videos are good to watch.
Looks awesome. [thumbs up] Not boring at all.
THANKS!! all the little details fre VERY INTERESTING!
I am currently designing a new modern Capital ship. I watch videos like these to see how each section of the ship is designed, and it really helps. Thanks!
Didn’t find it boring at all. Loved seeing the railings/stanchions go up.
Thanks for sharing your build! Really look forward to your uploads. I am stacking up inspiration to restart modelling as a hobby - just gotta get my three boys out of the starting blocks first!
Love the video, it isn't boring, its entertaining and educational. Thank you, and sent you an email with more details on the RMS titanic.
Awesome, thank you!
@@TheMidwestModelShop no problem, Ben. Looking forward to your epic build!
Great detail work. All the detail is important
Well done my friend love your videos always look forward to your new videos
Great job, as always, and thanks for taking the time to show this info. It will be great when I start mine.
Ironic that a huge model requires surgeon skills I love your videos.
Excellent work my friend. :)
Ben, I just finished watching (over the last few days) this build. I ended up here after watching your USS Arizona build, which was fantastic. That is at the top of my bucket list but I just wanted to say that you really stepped up your game on this one. The Pontos kits are not for the faint of heart but wow, what unbelievable detail! And the Bofors look amazing too. Just a thought for any future window glass, I saw someone ages ago use microscope slide cover slips for window glass. They used it on a building diorama to make broken windows and glass debris. They would be perfect for something like the Bridge windows. I've seen them as thin as 0.04". Would imagine any glue would come off easy. Would like to try it myself someday. Keep up the awesome job. Thanks for your hard work.
As to the railings, the color was the choice of the captain or the shipyard, and varied on most ships. I have even seen the USS Iowa with red, white and blue bunting covering the rails. Historic photos of the Iowa show the railing going in front of the bollards but behind the 'Panama bits'. That could have been changed quit easily, however. Sometimes it seems like one has to build a ship as it was at a certain time. Love the workmanship!
I'm sure that's true, especially with ships that were afloat for many years. The longer their career, the more things would change - particularly paint colours/shades. The same is true with railroad modelling. Some locomotives/rolling stock were in service for more than fifty years so, obviously, colours would change and modifications were made. Fortunately though, few locomotives are *this* size.
A lot will depend on your reference photos; how good they are and accurately they are dated. If you have enough information available, it would make good sense to "date" your model or, at least, narrow it down a bit, which I think Ben has done.
Fantastic work,another informative video 👍
It,s a beatiful work. Congratulations!!!!!
Brilliant. Love this. I really need to get a ship started!
Stop apologising. We look forward to seeing your work but that doesn't mean we can't wait. I have the HMS Hood and RMS Titanic on my to do list and wouldn't even have the courage to start if it wasn't for people like you. Keep up the good work.
I’ve been waiting all week
I'm sorry it's taken so long. I wish modeling was my full time job..... because this build would have been finished already!
Looks awesome Ben. Great work and great progress. I only hope I can do my MO the justice you've done with yours.
Thanks, great presentation! Good moving commentary. Would love to build with you sometime. Stuck in quarantine here in Denver, all the hobby store have restricted build areas. Appreciate the build technical details. It is what makes your videos worth watching
Hey Lee, so you can build models in the hobby stores with other people in Denver??? Because that sounds like a lot of fun!
The Midwest Model Shop oh yeah, i have stopped to watch several different builds since returning to the hobby after...well decades of life. I am having a great time cause you younger guys are great innovators with stuff like the dowel and sticky clay you used. The commradere, shared knowledge is fun
I was waiting until I got a few other projects done before I started mine, but, after seeing your videos now, I'm not sure I can wait much longer. Good work!
Awesome work, just got uss Iowa 1/200 scale and taking notes on your work to improve mine when I begin. Look forward to more.
I thought when you said the "posts" needed to be folded, they actually fold down over the railing. Then I saw later how they worked out. Have visited both the Wisconsin and the New Jersey, well worth it. Wish they were still active. Great work
I thought so, too. But the instructions didn't suggest that. Maybe I did it wrong. But I like the way it turned out.
@@TheMidwestModelShop looks great, stay motivated. Oh yeah, and safe🙄
This is looking so good, cant wait to see it completed..
Looks really good. All the time spent on those small details really pays off when you see it all put together. Can't wait to see it finished
Thanks Ben, as before you're paving my way forward on my Iowa build.
Ben, l have been checking some photos of the railings and in particular about the chocks (white items on edge of deck) and seems that railing do not pass infront of them, but is kept clear to allow ropes to go through.
Another thing (late comment 🙃) but i noticed that Eduard has a detail set giving pe platforms for gun directors. Rea
Nice coverage of those photo ectched parts, photo etch parts make it or brake it. Great work Matt
Looking really good, love all the detailing it makes the model look tremendous, have missed your videos over the last month or so, keep up the great work kind regards keep safe Barry
Looking great
Very cool video. Suddenly, with the addition of the 20s and 40s, the ship looks much better. Love the extra detail of the railing and their stanchions, great job... and the hint about the tape and ACC makes perfect sense. Well done.
I think the part you installed at the 10:54 second mark is actually a clipping for the AA suite installed on the ship, i only say this because USS North Carolina shows a similar room in a similar position on the design prints i have.
This is a little late, I've been binge watching your Missouri build. On your interior detail on the navigation bridge, what did you use for the wiring?...I was thinking for extra detail I might try using solder, it comes in different sizes, and it's flexibility makes for any bending you could possibly desire. Anyway, absolutely love the build, can't wait to see the completed ship.
I could be mistaken, but I believe the stantions should be folded in half, and sit over the railing piece. So that one half of the stantion is on either side of the railing. This would look more like the actual railings.
I think you’re totally correct. I remember looking at them when I received the kit and thinking man that’s gonna be a pain... then when I stumbled upon that part again in Pontos’ very clear instructions 🙄 I interpreted it differently. Probably because I hadn’t had enough coffee yet. I’m concerned that if I folded them over, that they wouldn’t close properly. The grove isn’t that recessed to totally accommodate the railing. I think I’ll try it to see how it looks for a comparison. But yes, I believe you’re correct and I did it “wrong”. But it did go together easily and after painting, I feel like I have the same affect.
Thank you for posting! :):):)
That looks great when you going to make another video 😊 have a great day
Wow!!!! Just... WOW!!! You never cease to impress me.
A question, though. The posts that hold the railing, could they have been folded around the railing, instead of folded on themselves and stuck on one side of the railing???
Yes. But I misinterpret the instructions. However, I’m concerned about them fitting right it I do that. I’m going to experiment with it and address it in the next video.
@@TheMidwestModelShop I was just wondering, because they are engraved on one side but not on the other. I cant wait for the next video... and the next one after that, and so on! Keep it up :)
Very nice!
Ben, what decals are you using for the 40mm bofors? Also your mighty Mo is starting to look amazing! I hope when i start mine it can look just as yours! Im also in the chicagoland area and do you know any good local model shops to go to that are still open? A model store is a rare sight these days....
I’m using OO scale train decals for the bofor decals. Before the shutdown I went to a hobby store that specializes in trains and they had a few sheets. Right now I have no idea who is open in the area. There is a place in Joliet, Walt’s Hobby & Model Shop that is really one of the last “good” stores around. I have no idea if he is open. And it’s a long drive for me so I only go there every 6 months or so.
@@TheMidwestModelShop Okay thanks Ben! There is one good model shop by me in oak lawn but this guy carries more amour models then anything else if that isn't a to bad of a drive for you!
Honestly I prefer dry transfers since they look the best and need the least amount of post application work to blend it to the surface. Although I do get why waterslide are preferred since they have the benefit of easier application
I think a combination of both would probably be best. But I guess dry transfers are hard/expensive to produce. Which is why we probably don’t see them much.
Gday mate...i was wondering if the detail sets for the iowa and the missouri are the exact same sets?...ive just purchased the mo but can only find the iowa detail set...thanks for any help...love following this build...keep up the good work👍...
Hey Derrick, So I'm not sure how close the sets are. My instructions have a note in a couple places differentiating it from the Iowa. So it is "possible" that they are the same. But there were a few differences between the ships. Maybe ask around on the FB group 1/200 scale ship builds and see if anyone has done both and would know for sure. Glad you're enjoying the build and good luck!
Awesome work, thank for sharing. Where does the fret of individual stanchions come from. After market supplier? Thanks.
It's from Pontos.
Great video -Wharton’s color are the railings?
Happy VJ Day everyone! 🇺🇸
Hi, Ben
I’m currently building the Trumpeter 1/350 scale Blücher , using the Eduard PE set.
They supply a new bow in the set , I’m assuming the kit bow isn’t accurate!
I’ve shaped the photo etch bow as instructed , but jeez! If I don’t get this right it’s going to look horrendous!
It seems that the new bow is going to protrude a few millimetres beyond the original, causing a weak point.
Would you bother fitting it ? The fitting instructions are very vague!
Are you gonna make this have a display look, as she looks in real life? Or are you gonna re-create the tokyo bay surrender scene? With turret 1 and 2 facing upwards to the right?
👍👍👍👍
How come those tiny parts don’t stick to your fingers with the super glue, while you were installing the railing?
Because I try very very hard not to touch the super glue. It doesn’t always work out, though.
first :D ( btw i love the details on your model)
Thanks. I think it is what makes building in this scale interesting.
Anywhere specific where you got those decals?
They were included in the Pontos kit.
Hi, is there any video, withered the final with the finished project?
Not yet, because it's not finished !!!
Any idea when it be finished and how long does it take, I lost the track
can you fold the stantions "over" the railing?
Yes. I did that with the stantions aft of turret 2.
@@TheMidwestModelShop looks awsome
*the US government wants their battleship along with their shrinkray back*
LOL!!!
Бен, очень круто. Привет тебе из Украины)
Do the ships not come with railing themselves?
Yes, just enough to run around the main deck.
@@TheMidwestModelShop Oh okay thanks, I just ordered my first ship and would be pretty bummed if it didn't have railings!
There are photo etch sets out there with just the rails in them that are pretty affordable if you want more!
Sorry I meant what color are the railings?
Same grey as the rest of the ship. French Blue Grey. It's supposed to be haze grey but I couldn't find any when I started the build. This is the closest color to haze grey.
Did you know that there were plans for a Montana class battleship? The main difference being a 4th main gun turret at the stern of the ship.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montana-class_battleship
Being an avid World of Warships player I knew about this. They were gonna be the most powerful warships but ever since the U.S. entered the war focus shifted from battleships to Air Craft carriers so the ship was never constructed. I have the Montana unlocked on my account and it's a cruiser killer. There's another Montana class battleship called the Ohio and this one has 18 inch guns like the Yamato's but only has 8 guns arranged in 2x4. And that is also a beast sadly I don't have that one unlocked.
Put the entire ship together now
wish I had the time and space.
I’ve spent my whole life just getting the space. Let me know if you figure out the time part. That’s why this ship isn’t finished yet.
