Hi. In this video i'm showing how to do soft edge masking. soft edge masking is used if you don't want an hard edge of paint ( thick edge of paint ) please like and subscribe. thanks for watching.
Great idea with the magnets 👍🏻
I’ve been prepping for a year and still struggle to soft edge. Watching you just do it shows you know what you’re doing. Always lovely to see a master of their craft.
Wish I had seen this before, would've saved me a lot of work sanding down my hard edge.
Same
Mate, this is genius, seriously. I've had a bad scratch on the bumper and got quoted an extortionate amount by a garage, so decided to fix it myself. But I just couldnt get it right because each time there'll be a visible paint line between the old and the new paint. This technique of softening the edges, especially folding the paper backwards, did the job. Its now fully blended in and I'm really happy with it. Top hack! Much appreciated.
Much needed information Calvin, these are the little things people forget to mention and you have definitely changed the way I mask from now on!
Fantastic video mate, from a complete novice painter I appreciate you sharing these tips.
Hi Fog. I'm Glad this video helped you. Cheers, Calvin
Spot on and a great method to fold tape for a shadow mask! Thanks Calvin.
I just did the passenger side door of my car and ran into the hard edge problem and came across this video. I'll try this when on the driver side door. Thanks for the tips!
Hi Joe. Thanks for the comments. I'm glad this video will help you out. Cheers, Calvin
Great job mate..been in the industry for 40 years and I know those tricks..and I'm long enough in it to know that when you're trying to show something..it'll always go a bit wrong!!.. but you're a great teacher..keep going!!!.. Terry
Howdy from Texas buddy. Very nice tip! I already have magnets, but using them a bit differently. I like how you use them to position the paper before tape.
Man I’ve watched hours of painting videos and never seen the magnet truck. Brilliant
Excellent tips! Loved the magnets and your accent

Hi Colin Stables. Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the comments. Cheers Calvin
Damm where were you yesterday ! I painted my panel and have a hard edge where the tape was . can you explain for us amateurs how to fix this ? Thanks
Thank you so much for the great insight. I plan to use these techniques this weekend on my van. The only question I have is if I roll back the soft edge a little bit each time when I transition from base paint, to clear coat, to final blending coat (melt coat)? Chris, Richmond, Virginia
My old boss taught me this. He was a great teacher.
G'day Mate, great little tip there, about to give it a crack on a boot lid.
Fantastic RUclips video.
Thanks for your comment glad you like my channel all the best Calvin.
Great info
Hi BVHinc. Thanks for the comments. I'm glad this video helped you out. Cheers Calvin
Thanks for sharing your tips with us amateurs, I'm just about to have a go at repairing and painting some plastic trim on my car and these masking tips are just what I was looking for. Just one question, I assume you spray away from the tape so you don't spray directly under the soft edge. Once again, thanks for your time.
Thanks a lot!
After you have done your soft edge and sprayed it how do you blend it in to the original paint?
Nice vid ..that will work on door jams aswell ??
Hi. MR_getinthere. Yes this method will work on door jams but I used to use soft edge masking foam on them. Thanks for the comments. Cheers Calvin
👏👏👏
I tried this method and still got a visible line where the new clear met the old clear. Is there a way to soften this line now?
Ok, Calvin, how do you do a soft edge on that wheel arch? That's what I want to know.
use more than one sheet
my cars fibreglass magnets dont work
Can you use this method with clear coat aswell bud?
Hi fordmad. Yes it works well around door shuts etc. On a normal panel blow in I use a similar technique just with a bigger fold for the laquer to blow behind then demask the blow in area while the laquer is wet and then blow some thinners carefully across the blow in line to blend. Hope this bit of info helps. Cheers Calvin
@@CalvinThomas05 brilliant cheers buddy
Where are you from ?
What language is this?
Just tape down on the natural edge and done. 🤦🏻♂️
