Because "Play you" meant nothing else Irene is an important mirror to Sherlock in the series and he found himself in her.

The love between the two of them, as in the Doyle’s Canon (which is actually its name, The Canon of Sherlock Holmes), is friendship or, better, a brotherhood. Brotherhood that in fact is more evident in the show, because the original, book version was written in the XIX Century.
But that’s the relationship between the two of them. A brotherhood.
And honestly I don’t understand the need to see more in it. As friendship is not one of the greater example of love!
Why one needs more between Sherlock and John?! Why this brotherhood bond is not enough?! IT’S A HUGE thing! So beautiful and deep.
Not everything is romantic love, between men, between woman and a man between women. Brotherhood and sisterhood are some of the greatest example of love, especially when there isn’t a blood bond.
Sherlock and John are more than "brothers." They developed themselves from colleagues to friends, best friends and finally a family who raise a child together. That's so much more than a brotherly relationship.
But first they are soulmates since the first day the met, and this in the best sense. It's so obviously that one without the other is nothing. They are an unbeatable and inserable unit, they complete each other.
Or, like Mike Gatiss said once a few years ago: "They are clearly absolutely made for each other.
Sherlock, John and Rosie are a happy family at the end and I love that.

@@hellokafkiana welcome. Did you know that Steven Moffat wrote a love scene episode for them after he saved her? He says it will never air. He needed it for himself. Can you imagine? In Doyle's story Irene was married when she met Sherlock.
In the Final Problem, didn't Euros deduce Sherlock had sex? Does this mean there was more than just texting?

Eurus just thought that the Irene theme sounded like love and pain, so she asked him that, but we never know. I just think that Stephen told the press that they didn't.

And Sherlock never was "in love" with Irene. It was only mutual respect and admiration between them, and they always talked to each other with the formal you and their surnames. Irene is the most obvious Sherlock mirror in the series, and she stated herself as gay to John.
One of Irenes last text messages to Sherlock: "Johns blog is hilarious. I think he likes you more than I do."

As much as I like the Adlock ship, I so much prefer the Sherlolly ship because it's had more time to develop and become a bigger ship. YES, Season 4 made the Sherlolly ship complicated. YES, the Adlock ship ended on an OK note (just my opinion). But if you ask me, it just seems Molly knows Sherlock far better. And if they do make Season 5 (GOD KNOWS WHEN THAT COMES OUT), and they decide to bring back Irene, the cat fight's gonna be HUGE!
That would be rubbish. Also, what sense does it serve to pit Molly and Irene against each other. İt would be disrespectful
