- I took this video down because I had to re-edit it. I apologize about that. I know you guys keep asking me about it. I no longer work with this facility anymore, I currently work at a different hospital. I’ve been busy with work but definitely more videos to come!

I was in a Surgical Tech class, amazing how many instruments there were. I also volunteered in my hospital in the SPD department. Putting basins together and setting up case carts.

Glad you are liking your job. I am about to start my volunteer work experience next week. It took three months for my background check to be completed by state. My only worry is that I will have a hard time memorizing all the different instruments. I am doing this without official schooling, so I am going in blind, so I am thankful for people like you who show different aspects of the field. Also surprised to find the wage rate in the Bay Area. Its not like that in the Los Angeles area, much lower. Some public hospitals even start at a few dollars above minimum wage.
socal benny thank you! Try studying the instruments everyday for at least one hour, there is a lot so try like 40 instruments a day. That’s what I did at school. After a while it gets stuck in your head. I’m glad this video helps.
you got thid u can do it i went to school in 2019 right before covid forgot everything started studying my book and passed the exam never got a chance to go to clinicals school did not provide it and i paid for it but i wanna go on the road

My YT 1000 dollars. It’s an online school. Did you go to an online school?
My YT mine was about $2,800. The school I went to does a lot of hands on training and they actually help you find a hospital where you can do your externship. Hope this helps.
2thang2 that sounds well worth the money because I have to find my own internship because I need a certain amount of hands on hours before I can that the test but I just have not found a hands on school here in Michigan
That's very DANGEROUS!!!!!! I'm glad you showed video of this. DANGEROUS to not manually clean instruments and just throw them in washer thinking this will thoroughly clean these instruments. You should really report that because that lazy act is dangerous for a patient who is receiving surgery and, a possible lawsuit can happen if there was a bad outcome, like infection from the patient. Oh Jesus! Thank you for the upload.
Good catch! Yes you are correct that is definitely not good for the patient, not only does it look bad on the department but it also shows technicians aren’t doing their job correctly. Everything we do in SPD is for patient care, just throwing it in the washer is definitely lazy work
Starting school next month. I’m having doubts and second thoughts about this because I felt like I’m getting into something that doesn’t pay well but from what I hear it pays pretty decently. I’m from the Chicago area and most places pay like 18-20 an hour depending where you work at. I’m hoping it’s worth it.
Prison Mike I kinda felt the same way too while I was doing this in school. Honestly it does pay pretty good and I’d recommend getting into this program. I’ve worked at a couples facilities and they’re all pretty much the same just different workflow.
Do you mind making a vid explaining A-Z what you would have to do from start of shift to end of shift. Also what is very important to study on before you take the exam.

I’m a medical assistant for going on 12 years, I looked in my local hospital to see if this job was available, with no certification. And sure as day there was a job opening and I applied and I got it with no training whatsoever so I start Monday and I’m super excited and nervous too because there’s so many instruments you have to learn

Carts aren’t so silent in my dept. lol
For the stress level, constant modules, certification requirement, and being on call not to mention working with some unfriendly people the pay wage for this position was about $5 short per hr what it should be.
If you decide to choose this career, I'd suggest classes prior rather than on the job training.
The stress level really??… it is really that bad …. ? I’m not new to the medical at all. I’m used to being a RUG and working under pressure but, explain the stress level to me.

I think I am going to pursue this as a career. I have a few questions. First is how long was your schooling? Second how much is school. Third what is an average salary?
Nick The schooling is only 4 months and 1 month for your externship. And the cost for me was about 2k but I have checked with the school recently and the tuition actually increased to 10k 😕The salary depends on where you live, I live in San Francisco so it can range from $30-$35 an hour. Hope this helps

Nick that’s the school I went to! The sterile processing program at CCMCC was about 2k when I registered. They increased their price now to about 10k. It’s a great school tho I definitely recommend going there and checking it out. You do a lot of hands on training unlike some other schools I’ve visited.

Nick I’ll be honest with you. I’ve always been the type of person to not like school. I didn’t like studying for anything. You need that motivation to move forward. Study real hard and stay after school to study the instruments and you will be fine. Don’t lose focus.

Thank you! The program for sterile processing tech is not that hard to be honest. This job requires no math whatsoever. Most surgical technicians I know at my hospital were sterile processors before so it’s definitely doable if you plan on doing that. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door in the medical field
I like decon.. it’s good y’all really test the cutting. 4.5 and less yellow .. over 4.5 red
Ty Lee me too. I personally like working in decon, my favorite part of sterile processing and we do test the scissors for accuracy of sharpness

@@kellym6118 ...I do have 3 teens but it's definitely a great job with benefits and room to evolve.... I'm going in as a tech II with no certificate and the pay is still great with school reimbursement so I will take advantage of that.... As long as you have great day care and a schedule for your little 1 everything is possible

I just got my certificate a few days ago but I'm having trouble in finding an agency to help me with my externship. I see a lot of people only are doing up to a month of externship, fhe school I went to, in Stockton,CA, said I have to do a year of externship? Anybody have recommendations on agencies that will help me out ? Thanks!
vanessa Velasco congratulations on your certificate! And your school told you that?? Usually it’s a month of externship, I’ve never heard of a year externship before. Try calling an agency called “MGA Healthcare” they will help you find a job. Hope this helps!

Jada Moman I personally think this would be a great career for you. The schooling for this is only 4 months plus 1 month of externship. And pays really good. Great way to get your foot in the door in the medical field. Plus you don’t have to deal with any patients. I’d definitely recommend this for sure!

Hi! Let me ask you. How do you reprocess veress needle? So, we dismantle the Veress needle for washing, but for sterilization we mount it, twist it and put it in a bag and then in a container with the main set of instruments.
I personally haven’t seen the veress needle in our department actually.
Hey 2thang2. I know this sounds funny and all, but I'm a 43 year old father with two kids and have and own my own business, but its been going down hill lately. I just signed up with Ashworth College (online School) I'm hoping I am making a right choice venturing this way and going into this field. My biggest concern is do you see or work with anyone older than you in this field or is this field really more geared with younger folks? I have always said being somewhere in the medical field is always better choice then not being in it and it being such a high demand field. Any advice you can offer or anyone in this field already, please let me know.
Neal Mundy yes I have worked with people around your age, even older as well. I recommend this field because it’s pretty easy and chill, as far as work flow goes it really depends on which hospital you work at. I worked at a couple hospitals because I was a traveler before and there all pretty much alike. Only hospital that was really busy was UCSF in San Francisco. As for pay that also depends on the location. San Francisco for example is one of the highest pay out there. With this job you don’t have to deal with customer service, you don’t work with patients at all which I consider to be a plus. Hope this helps

Not really, the only thing “heavy” would have to be the big instrument sets. Even though there’s a “25 pound” limit sometimes i feel like it’s heavier lol so I think you should be good

can you be a sterilization tech if you are not that good at reading and spelling words? Or are they pretty strict at having correct words spelled on worksheet or what not.
Backpackapocalypse well majority of the hospitals I’ve worked at, there’s no need for writing but as far as reading goes, yes you need to be a good reader. Because sterilizing is the last process the sets go through and reading the parameters is very crucial in SPD

Quick question: If you have a camera that passed the VPro biologicals but, the indicator in package did not pass. Can you pop on the camera which the indicator inside change and use it for your paperwork? Wouldn't you just rerun the load for proper sterilization? Thank you
shannon russell if the CI (indicator) that was in the camera did not pass you have to recall it and reprocess it again. If it was in the load with other instruments then those need to be recalled as well. If the CI did not meet the passing requirements then that means the BI most likely did not pass as well. It wouldn’t be safe to use for procedure and it would harm the patient.
I know it's been long but, thank you for your info. I had co worker did that and was arguing I was wrong for recalling it and also reporting her. CSP dept are first line of defense for patients!!!! Anytime I have opportunity to be a patients advocate I'm call anybody out on it! I don't care who that is. I hope if any of my coworkers see me doing something incorrectly I hope they call me out too. This job is Serious for real!)!!
Is the area you were working considered I, II or III ? I'm new to this just wanted to what each section meant thanks
CynniCindy well when you start off new as a tech you’re automatically a tech 1. Once you hit your two years of being a tech then you’re automatically a tech 2. Tech 3 is a bit different, you would have to apply for this position because tech 3s have more responsibility than regular techs but they do get paid more. At that point you’re a lead tech and have more seniority than others. Honestly it’s just based off experience.

Av Lashae it depends on the hospital honestly but usually yes they will allow it. Probably not a good idea to wear those in decon though lol

Stacey Lynn temp agencies will hire you even if you are fresh out of med school. Agency that hired me was MGA Health Care and hired me 2 weeks after I graduated from the Sterile Processing program
@@2thang2 Wow, thanks for the tip. I'll check them out. The class in Riverside charges $2,500, Purdue online charges a lot less. Only problem is they don't place you in an externship. I'm afraid to go this route.

Rovi Andres congratulations on passing your exam! Unfortunately I don’t know how you could get into externship on your own because the school I went to actually did it for me. I heard from my coworker that it is possible to find one on your own just a little bit more difficult. Try calling healthcare agencies and see if they can get you hired somewhere since you are certified now. Hope this helps

carlos viray most of the job openings are in the city. I know kaiser is hiring in San Francisco for per diem and another kaiser in San Leandro, full time. But since you finished your externship your best bet would be temp agencies that way you’ll get your experience. Most hospitals ask for a year experience.

carlos viray yeah that’s the sucky part. I started off with MGA. Give them a call and they will place you in a facility that needs help. I started working in 2 weeks from graduating med school, so hope this helps. Here’s there number (415) 421-4900

My school was three nights a week 4-9 from October to the end of March. Started extern March 2 and it will be about 3 months-40 hours a week that equals the 4 hours. I went to Rowan College.

CityKids when I started working at UCSF I had no experience. I was fresh out of school. It’s okay if you have no experience because this hospital accepts new grads and they will train you.
