      Nice. Learn all the hiragana. Then katakana. Then learn about verb conjugations and basic grammar before diving into kanji and a large Anki deck. Just my opinion.

    as a native portuguese speaker, i feel you when you said japanese is very far from our roots, but at the same time the grammar doesn't feel so hard it's actually enjoyable to learn. Great video bro, gonna stick around your channel :)

    This is actually the first "japanese progress" video that I watched and was actually worth it. You said realistic things, talked about the most important thing, at least for me, that is time. Also, stuff as enjoying the progress and trying not to bound it as another chore in life, while understanding the things you (read as we) are bad while still learning, acknowleding it and trying to improve.
    Anki just sucks so much for me whenever i have to do 1 hour of it every day and people just come and say "Whaaaa, it was supossed to be 15 minutes, dude". From most of the videos that i watched in this style, those are just poeple who don't have to work, only go to the university to do japanese classes and come to say "Hey, I was doin' 8-10 hours of immersion per day and got to this level" and so on, while showing a bunch of graphics and only talking about how many words they could learn in a day, not talking about any thing they did in this one year or the new experiences they had with the language. It pisses me off so much, mate.
    Just a nice video man. Nice jokes, nice talk and nice progress, just talk about anything in the channel and I will watch at this point. (Btw, you speaking spanish resonates so much with me being a braziling and talking portuguese, so I guess some points were increased because of that haha). Keep going!

      Wow, man, thanks a lot for your words! Although I’m not sure how often I’ll be posting, I share the sentiment about Anki. Thankfully, by posting these videos, I always get some advice, so hopefully, I can reduce my time or the tedium next year :). Anyway, glad you’re sticking to the channel, and thanks again!

    I spent like a year with Japanese in the background, five minutes here or there memorizing the Hiragana Katakana and a few basic words with mindpalaces and a spaced repetition style app, some background listening, and the ten free minutes that lingopie gives you most weeks. Then I decided late last year to really take it seriously. I'm in college and have a personal life so I don't get as much time to study as I'd like but it's a lot more and a lot more consistently that I'm studying. I am making a lot of progress really quickly so that is very motivating, it's only been a few months since I've started taking things seriously so I am still very much in the basics. I have been using The Japanese Grammar Guide for my study making physical flashcards out of the vocab and grammar rules and memorizing them with the mind palace system, then using a review structure that The Magnetic Memory Method talks about to lock things into place. Also a lot of listening. I typically watch about a season of an anime with English subtitles first then watch it again with the subtitles off so I can make it more comprehensible faster

    I moved to Quebec City a few years ago from the usa and immediately recognized the streets you were walking in the video. I am having to learn both French and Japanese simultaneously which is slowing my progress i think but its worth it.

    As someone who who has studied Japanese and Chinese on and off for the past decade, I can confirm my biggest mistake by far has been not listening to much content in those languages! I was always good at speaking, reading and reading, but wondered why I had so much trouble with listening. For many YEARS I thought it was pointless if I couldn't understand much of what I was watching... Then it recently hit me why so many non-native English speakers understand a lot without much studying; they grow up watching lots of American content! So recently, I've tried to make it a habit in all of the languages I've studied, to consume content in those languages. I turn off subtitles for Japanese and Chinese, since I'm overall at an upper intermediate level.

    Dude, I would just drop the core2k/6k deck after the first 2k. I've been doing both Kaishi 1.5k (an optimized core2k) and my own mining Anki deck (with Migaku, but using Yomitan+ASB player also works well) at the same time, and I can say that my own mined cards are so much much easier to learn. There is simply no memorable context for core2k/6k and so it's 10x harder to get those words to stick. Whereas if you encountered some unknown word in a show you're watching, looking it up, deciphering it's meaning because you want to understand the show, and then add it to Anki if the word is important enough, those cards are just so much easier to learn afterwards as you have some context for it already. Much funner as well. But of course this is a bit personal preference as well.
    I would also look into enabling FSRS in Anki for your deck (with new Anki this should just be a deck-specific setting), I think that will reduce your reviews quite a bit. At least, I've not been going for as long as you yet (a couple months), but my daily average reviews is much much lower (121) and I add around 10-15 new words per day. I currently take 45m for Anki and also don't want to go above 1h.

      Yoo, I've been getting this advice a lot here on RUclips and from people I know who are on a similar journey. It’s just that I don’t want to quit the 2k/6k deck since it’s been such a clutch saver so many times. That said, I’m definitely trying to optimize my Anki routine, your comment and others have made me realize I can definitely shorten the amount of time it’s taking.
      Actually, just after posting this video, I thought, heck, why not start mining with Migaku? Especially now that it works on your phone, and the picture feature works great for reading manga. So from now on, I think I’m going to split my study time 50/50 between these two approaches and then evaluate how it’s going in a few months before making a decision.
      Thanks a lot for the advice and for taking the time to comment!

      ive done core 2k/6k and finished it in a little over a year and its honestly been a huge help. though you should immerse a lot. reading helps, anime helps. to each their own though.
      only mentioning cuz ive been told my kanji level is nearly N1 despite solely using Core 2k/6k + looking up common words i run into on jisho (that i have yet to learn). looking at the different meanings of a kanji in jisho has made learning words infinitely easier because u can FEEL the kanji

    I really struggle with passive listening. I listen to anime, and if I watch and focus I get like 30%, but if I work while it's playing in the background I dont understand much

    • @Alde_T
      @Alde_T  9 дней назад +1

      hey man! I think it’s normal not to get much from passive listening. In fact, that’s probably the most likely scenario. The way I see it, it’s just another way for me to stay in contact with the language since I’m not currently in Japan.
      That said, there are times when my work requires a lot of focus, so I don’t use passive listening then, maybe just some Japanese music or nothing at all. But in moments when I’m pretty much on autopilot, I tend to catch some words. Lately, if I hear certain words repeatedly, I’ve started adding them to Anki. Also, there’s no need to feel pressured to listen to Japanese all the time unless that’s part of your daily objective.

    • @Goks135
      @Goks135 7 дней назад

      You should only listen to material you have already listened to and comprehended for your passive listening not random material you know nothing about. In other words, use your active listening material as your passive listening otherwise you will feel like you are wasting your time.

    Ive tried learning Japanese through multiple approaches different times but none stick with me. My situation is different fair warning because I have been doing Chinese for more than a year and at least at my level kanji makes things more comprehensible and not less.
    Right now I barely just started a new attempt, I'm doing the Kaishi 1.5k deck and doing comprehensible input every day. I already use Anki a lot for studies so I don't mind studying a different subject in Anki (which I feel is my difference from previous attempts where I eas just Anki adverse. There is a grammar book I own that I want to get through but I'm taking things slowly so I haven't started yet, I'll do that once I know for certain I'll have more time to commit to it. I also listen to a lot of music whvih is actually my main motivation for Japanese atm.

    Instead of lowering to 5 cards, try lowering the desired retention in Anki. In fact, maybe even use the compute minimum retention feature. Lots of people lower it to like 0.84 and notice much less reviews for barely any less retention.

    • @WarriorX16
      @WarriorX16 10 дней назад

      @ Hopefully that helps! Just gotta give it some time, and make sure to NOT select “reschedule cards”. You don’t want it to reschedule everything to match the new desired retention, instead they’ll just get properly scheduled next time you answer the card. Otherwise, you might have a lot due all at once.
