      +Elyse Oiralinde Yes. you are so right Elyse. This is the music of the season and I love it. Heard it last Friday at the Shrine of the Imaculate Conception in Washington DC. It was playing in my head as I walked home. I should of driven because it was so cold, but this playing in my head kept me warm.

    How latin should be pronounced is a matter of debate, even within a country, depending on the secular or religious setting, and also of the way ones own mothertongue is pronounced. Even on the continent, every country has slight differences, though they all try to make it sound as italian as they can. But the Brits do it very different, don't know why. Maybe because they stepped away from Rome 500 years ago. I decided not to let that bother me, and just listen to the music.

  • @peddletoneG

    Stellar is a good term! I have lost count of the times I've sung this, but as these fellows show, the blend is what really sells it. How many voices do you muster for similar choral works, perhaps double-choir; Gabrielli, Schutz, Monteverdi, Lassus, that lot? I shall try to follow NYP and see what new gems they favor us with. Thanks guys, from an old choral warhorse.

  • @carolineleiden

    In english speaking countries when singing latin pieces the c is often pronounced as s. Listen to most of the great college choirs of England. Don't get too worked up about it. It's a shame it makes it unable for you to enjoy a really good performance.

    Latin text
    O magnum mysterium,
    et admirabile sacramentum,
    ut animalia viderent Dominum natum,
    jacentem in praesepio!
    Beata Virgo, cujus viscera
    meruerunt portare
    Dominum Christum.
    Alleluia.
    English translation
    O great mystery,
    and wonderful sacrament,
    that animals should see the new-born Lord,
    lying in a manger!
    Blessed is the Virgin whose womb
    was worthy to bear
    Christ the Lord.
    Alleluia!

    Even though I've sung this countless times, this performance takes me to new heights. ¡Alucinante! I love the slow Alleluia.
    Since it's a video, couldn't they have done it from memory? We do, but then again, their repertoire might be a bit bigger. BTW, many countertenors can sing bass.

    It's beautiful, I have to say. But I had to stop it when they got to "iacentem in praesepio...O beata virgo cuius vicera" because they pronounced the "c"'s like "s"'s which is horribly incorrect in BOTH classical and choral latin. I take latin and choir and my latin teacher who studied in Vatican City confirmed that in choral/ecclesiastical latin, the c in iacentem and vicera must be pronounced "ch". Plus the falsetto man makes it sound watery because falsetto sounds very thin.

    • @indeserto
      @indeserto 5 лет назад

      Not in Spanish. Falsettist sopranos and altos were the rule in Spain in Victoria's time. This one has far more body to his sound thatn the usual whingeing female sopranos one gets singing this repertoire.

    I have heard other groups sing 'c' as 's' instead of 'ch'. I prefer the 'ch' sound. Still, I don't let that get in the way of enjoying the singing. And a thin-sounding falsetto sound? I WISH my falsetto were as good as his is! Thanks for posting this video.

    I would think that when singing a polyphonic work written in Latin, one would use the pronunciation of the Church, ecclesiastical pronunciation which is the norm in the Church. It would seem logical to me. Prayers said in Latin, be it in a secular or religious context are pronounced with the ecclesiastical pronunciation... carolineleiden

    • @mayabloom3267
      @mayabloom3267 8 лет назад +1

      Which ecclesiastical pronunciation are you referring to? 'Church Latin' which is sung with Italianate pronunciation? Or Anglican pronunciation, which is traditional English groups, as this is performed in an Episcopalian church?

    • @xxOmnipresencexx
      @xxOmnipresencexx 5 лет назад

      Really, this should be sung with the Spanish regional Latin pronunciation, which differs from both the English and Italian pronunciation. For a historically correct, if seemingly extreme example of regional Latin, check the French Latin of Ensemble Organum's rendition of Messe de Nostre Dame: ruclips.net/video/1gEV42RKf6E/видео.html

    I will never know why Victoria seems to be always ranked above Guerrero and Morales. His music, compared to theirs, always seems to rely on standard cadences and devices, while the other two excite me far more : Guerrero with denser textures, never ending lines and soaring canons and Morales' with nearly as much of that but also a special inevitable quality , as if the music is happening by itself and all he had to do was pluck it out of the air (I know that's waffle), but I have FG and CdeM dead-heating, and TLdeV comes in a poor third for me, if even that, for what about Alonso Lobo? You are a great group for this music.You look as if you just wandered in off the street to sing in a church. Please wander into one near me, and let me know in advance. .
