I served in the Finnish military in 1985, slept a lot in tents also in winter (in the "half platoon tent"). Feet was burning and the head was freezing :) Remember a couple of instances when the water in the water bottle started to freeze after the night(the bottle was my DIY pillow). The stomach got a bit upset of drinking to cold water, never experienced that ever after the army. Served 11 months, worst part was the lack of sleep, slept standing several times :). Otherwise it was pretty fun though, still remember the serial of my "rynkky"(rk62).

I remember back in 1996 when I was in army and we had to do this "ski in the icy water" exercise. We were told that it would be just normal "full package sking march". The full package weights about 20kg. I thought it would be good idea not to pack everything. Luckily I had packed mostly clothing and no pillows. I truely learned to respect "Sarkatakki / frieze jacket". I would probably frozen to death without it.

Canada is not bordering Russia. Better to train where a situation might arise

@ Did i write something about russia ? Canada is north country, canadians are more adapated to harsh winter than U.S. soldiers.

@ True. I thought you meant that it's easier to train US soldiers in cold weather by simply going to Canada

What a joke! U.S. winter uniforms and tactics are pathetic.

Uniforms arent the best but honestly you have no grounds to attack their tactics.

Wouldnt know about their tactics, but i have heard many americans say their winter gear, especially camo should be upgraded.

Wouldnt they go abroad to train because they think their training has flaws? I wouldnt judge a scholar for willingness to learn more

Nothing wrong with uniforms or tactics. Any uniform is just fine for training. Professional armies has better tactics than mandatory with few month training.
