Thank you very much for providing this useful information, I am at the same situation now and my sense guide me to this video hope I will be lucky enough to through this challenge 🌹🌹🌹
Dear Andre, First of all a very big thank you for providing such detailed personal insights on the ATAS certificate system & its delays. Our situation is a bit different. My daughter is a STUDENT RESEARCHER and her conditional offer states that she will be needing ATAS certificate in order to get the CAS letter. Unlike you, we cannot even "push" the UKVI to contact the FCDO directly in order to expedite the ATAS process because we simply cannot apply for a student visa until we get the CAS letter for which we need the ATAS certificate. So we student(s) are really in a bind!
When you submitted it? I know the wait for the ATAS certificate can be nerve-wracking. Mine took a while too (I'm PhD student). I submitted in May and got it in early July, so around 31 working days. Feel free to reach out to ATAS and also the admissions Uni if it's been longer than 30 working days, they might be help to follow up your ATAS status.
Many thanks for your video! Certainly helps a lot! I just wrote this comment to 1)Thank you for the content and 2) to see if someone that applied on April 2024 already have the certificate. I did applied on April 1st, it has been almost 6 weeks :(
Just to add to others' experiences here, my incoming PhD student from India has been waiting for over five months with no updates. He was supposed to start his PhD at the beginning of this month but has had to defer to January. As a student applying from overseas, I don’t think he has the same visa application options as you. Is there any information on rejection rates? He’s panicking because some sources in India have told him that applications pending for more than six months are unlikely to be successful. They even advised him to withdraw his application to avoid a rejection. I’m struggling to understand how our research could be connected to military technology or weapons of mass destruction-we study the mouse brain!
Sorry to hear that this problem is still unsolved. I don't know why the Foreign Office is not acting. I recently heard some positive stories about some students from China getting ATAS approved in 2 weeks. It is very strange that at the same time other students wait for 5 months. Horrible...
Did receive confirmation email after submitting your application? I didn't, that is why am asking. My application is already 25 working days old. Applied on 28th june
After 40 days of waiting, I sent a polite message explaining my circumstances and the urgency of my situation by CCing the HR office of the university and attaching the message traffic with the university. As a result, I received the certificate the following day. My advice is to wait for about a month and then send a message outlining your situation. Also, thanks a lot for the pure information in a lucid way Andrey.
@mawaismaqbool3449 I am back to Pakistan, I got reply from ATAS they are working on it and need more time for reply. So waiting...my studies has been deferred to next year 2024 feb
Guys, the UK ATAS certificate is like a lite version of a US visa. My wife has been waiting for her US visa for 12 months already because she is a physicist.
Can't get enogh on how valuable your video is, thank you for sharing so! Followed your recommendations and equiry to issue the CoS without completed ATAS. To contribute, even after a successfull VISA decision, you might get REFUSED ATAS later on. That means ATAS is no longer applicable
The whole UK research atmosphere is a nightmare. Applied by January and accepted by April, ATAS took one and a half months then CAS generation took one more. Applied for a priority VISA, and it's been seven weeks still no sign. The Home Office doesn't want researchers. Earlier got positions in Germany and the US, deeply regretting saying no to them. Now after this shit of paperwork that is going on for almost a year, I am tired. Missed reading and living in constant stress for a year which is not worth it ...thinking about making a new application this season.
The last requested change was made on May 11th. It's been 55 working days (researcher, Ph.D. in physics, applying from Russia). Without ATAS I can't even get the offer and certificate of sponsorship. Really stressful
Hi Andrey. Thanks for the information about ATAS certificate delays. Too bad that you had to wait 145 days 😩.I submitted my ATAS application on April 12th and got feedback to correct some information one week after. I corrected and resubmitted and since then I have not received any response. It´s been 30 days. I have friends who received the certificate in 12 days. I'm worried because my work contract starts in July.
Hello. I am masters student applied on 30th may, it's been 24 working days and I have not heard back from them yet. I aslo wrote email to them but only got same automatic email.
Thanks for the video! I’ve applied for the ATAS in the end of May to do a PhD in chemistry and still waiting. My current visa expires in two months, but I’m really worried I won’t receive it in time to apply for a new visa from within the UK. I tried to email the ATAS team, but got the same automatic reply. I asked my university to email the ATAS team directly and they replied that they are aware of the application, but it is taking longer to process than they’d like it too. At least I know they have my application, because I didn’t get the confirmation email after submitting it.
Hi! Ask your university if you can apply for a visa extension without ATAS (like I did). Apply before your current visa expires. Then you can wait for a few more months for the certificate. The only problem is that you will not be able to travel unless you receive your ATAS and new residence permit.
@@chuscience Thanks for advice!! Hopefully I will receive it soon and won't have to do this. As far as I know in some cases they can still refuse your visa if you dont have the certificate
@@chuscience I am PhD student, I started my PhD in 2019, I need to extend my visa, I have applied for ATAS certificate but I don’t know when I will get. My visa is expiring in 10 days. Can I make application without ATAS certificate? But the University are asking for ATAS to issue CAS letter, I cannot apply visa without CAS letter. What Can I do in such situation? Suppose, If I made application with ATAS, how many days they will give us to submit the ATAS certificate?
@@programmerbigyan4574 Hi! Yes, you can apply for a visa without ATAS to stay legally in the UK (you will have to submit your filled application and pay all visa fees online). Then, you will be given 1-2 months to upload the "evidence" for your application, which is the ATAS certificate. However, I think you cannot apply without the certificate of sponsorship. Please speak to your university again. Don't they know that your visa expires soon? I hope they issue CoS for you, so you can apply without ATAS. Good luck!
Does anyone received a similar email " Dear Applicant, Thank you for your email. We are aware of your application, unfortunately it is taking a little longer to process than we’d like it too. We are doing what we can to process it as soon as possible and we will inform you of a decision regarding your application as soon as we have one. " after how long he received his ATAS?
Anybody here who applied in July for ATAS and recieved that? I am waiting for my PhD one still .... my visa expires in 11 oct.... am really worry... whats ur situation?
I got offer in MSc in corrosion control engineering from University of Manchester. Waiting ATAS certification from 67 working days. I applied on May4th. It make me stressed a lot. hope for good.

@@BubbleGum_786 I got my ATAS after more than 100 days!!!!! Cas letter 2 fricking weeks And applied for my visa on September 11th (although payed extra £260 for priority service and they were supposed to give it less than 5 days) I still got no answer from them cock heads🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Hello, I am getting very frustrated. I have applied for the ATAS certificate on July 4th, but still haven't received any response from their team. I am going to study MSc in Smart Energy and the Built Environment at UCL. Any suggestions?
Thank you. In the same boat. Applied for my visa but cannot upload the ATAS! Still waiting for it. 15 days have passed. Start date for my new position is in 2 weeks. And I am just terrified, how do I pay for my rent for successive months without salary! Will try uploading a letter soon! This is outrageous. This is the state of legal migration!
Thank you for sharing your experience, that's a very brave and risky choice!! Could there be a possibility that your visa extension application get refused straight away because you did not upload an ATAS? I'm in a similar position at the moment, waiting for my ATAS that I applied in Aug. I've already deferred my PhD starting date from Oct to Jan, and it looks like I will need to defer it by another three months. My current graduate visa will expire in Dec, so I wonder if it's best if I try your strategy, or apply for a skilled worker visa first for the right to stay since I am working full-time now...
I got the PhD offer from Cambridge, I got the Cambridge International Scholarship, I also got the funding from Cambridge Trinity College, I have no sensitive academic background, but my ATAS was refused last month, just because the redundant but not relative wording, and now I have to take a gap year😭 Can't say this process is scientific because all the decisions are made by the wordings in ATAS research summary, sad😤
I am not even sure if their system has received my application successfully, because I never got any confirmation email. I emailed them to check on that and they responded in 10 days and asked a question but never replied to my anser untill now.
Hi, I am a PhD applicant in computer science, I submitted my application for ATAS on 16 June and I corrected it on 22 June, After that, I have not received any response or email from them, I have been waiting for more than 12 weeks. I sent an email to follow up but it did not any results. My course will start on 2 October, I am under pressure and stressed. Has someone in the same situation? What can I do?
I applied for ATAS clearance certificate on the 18th of April and till this moment, no ATAS certificate was issued to me, it's been 70 days (50 working days) since my application. The wait and suspense is mentally draining.
I received it after 24 working days! Just if you have the right reason you can email the ATAS team, and your certificate will come very soon. Also, need to fill out the form extremely carefully.
Everyone has the right reason when they apply for ATAS. They are either starting their PhD or research assistant position. Nothing makes your case special. If you got it early, well and good, but that doesn't mean others are facing delay because they deserve a delay.
@@SurajInd89 Prof. Right, if you are smart enough you should get from my statement that I mean if your application is taking a bit longer you can contact the ATAS team providing them with a firm reason. Otherwise, there is no concern to rush.
Hi, I just wanted to say that I received my ATAS certificate within 31 working days. I submitted it in May 2024 and received it in the first week of July 2024. After 30 working days had passed, I sent them an email inquiring about the status of my application. Fortunately, I received my certificate on the same day I sent the email.
@@PANKAJTHAKUR-qk3op I hope you hear back soon! You can also reach out to your admissions Uni, if it's been over 30 working days. They might be able to help you follow up on your application status.
Hello Andrey. Just to be clear, did you attach the UKVI letter you wrote as a placeholder document (For ATAS evidence) in your visa application? Or you sent the letter separately outside of your visa application?
Hi Alexander! Yes, I attached my letter to my visa application instead of the ATAS certificate. That is, I completed the visa application form in the UKVI system, paid the fees, and then attached my letter (a .pdf file) as evidence. Please note that I don't know your situation. I was already in the UK. So I strongly believed that I will eventually get my ATAS certificate. You may get in some sort of trouble if you apply for a visa and pay the fees, but then your ATAS application is rejected.
I applied for ATAS in the first week of Sept 2023 , I still not received it.....Any guidance on duplicate application?....Is there anyone who reapplied and got their response earlier?
Hello all! Can anyone please update me with an information: Is Atas certificate manadtory for issue of certificate of sponsorship from the University for an academic researcher? Kindly comment
I am waiting for my certificate for 38 days, I am afraid of when I will get it? Can anyone send me the link of the format for writing an email to the FCDO regarding a delay in ATAS? My intake is in September.
Hello Thanks for the great information @Andrey Churkin. I had received my offer letter for MSc In Chemical Engineering for Teesside University. Applied for ATAS CERTIFICATE on September 07, 2023. Still haven't received yet till date. Even contacted ATAS team through the e-mail got the same Auto Generated Reply. The thing is till I don't submit ATAS CERTIFICATE I wont get the unconditional Offer Letter and the CAS letter. Even tried contacting University they replied saying ATAS isn't under there control just wait. So cant even apply for visa. How to proceeed in such case ?? Your opinion must needed Its completely frustrating since its going to be 3 months for now.
Hi Salim! Sorry to hear that. Are you outside of the UK now? I am afraid you will have to wait for ATAS, and your MSc contract has to be shifted somehow. Or maybe you will have to lose a few months of your MSc. Terrible.
I applied on March, 17, a researcher in Computer Science. I e-mailed 3 times to ATAS team, they even responded to me, like your application is under consideration. I think the problem is my nationality. My dead-line is June, otherwise I won't be given CoS.
Hi Alina! Speak with your university (HR or some student/researcher mobility department) about this delay. I got my CoS without ATAS - the university just included my ATAS application number as proof. Then, you can start your visa application process while waiting for the real ATAS certificate to arrive. I don't think your nationality is the problem. I got ATAS as a Russian scientist. Everyone is affected by these delays. Good luck!
Sorry to hear that. Any luck writing to ATAS@fcdo.gov.uk? Try writing a message with an urgent title, saying that the deadline is soon, and this delay impacts your contract, positions, etc. Also, be in touch with your university HR team. Maybe they have some solutions.
I got a conditional offer letter of phD program in electrical engineering from one of the UK's public University. But I didn't applied for atas yet, because I didn't have any publication, What are the chances that my atas will approved, should I apply for atas now or defer my application for 1 year. Please help
Hi Vimal! I don't know how important publications are for the ATAS certificate. But I guess that not many students have publications prior to their PhD. You definitely can apply now. The application is free. It just takes time to fill in the form. Then, you will have to wait for the decision. The important question is, do you have time now to wait for ATAS and go through the visa application process? As you may see, it can take you more than 3 months to get the certificate. If this timeline works for you and your university, go for it. Hope this helps. Andrey.
Hello, thanks for this video. Please I need some clarifications. I applied for Atas about 10days ago, the status indicated "SUBMITTED" on application. Two days ago I checked my dashboard, and beside the submitted, I saw another column with "WITHDRAW" indicated inside. I hope the application is still looking good? Or is that a decision from fcdo?
Hi Stephen! I did not see any "withdraw" indications in my application. I just checked my old screenshots. However, note that my application was one year ago. Maybe they have changed the website. Try writing them an email for clarification.
Hi! The Atas service was down 5-7th Feb due to maintenance activities. It is the same case with all! A new withdraw column is in display. I submitted my Atas on 19th December, still awaiting a decision!
@@dr.anirbanchakrabarti1938 wow.. this is serious. Did you try contacting them after the initial 30 days standard processing period? What was the response? And do you have your approval now, it's 72 days since your application already.
Hello everyone, I have a Summer Internship at Cranfield. Got my Standard Visitor Visa too. Applied for ATAS on 29th May, no mails yet, and status shows "submitted". 22 working days done, any suggestions ? My flight for UK is in 3 days
Thank you for making this informative video, particularly the tip about applying for visa with a letter explaining ATAS delay. I am in a similar situation (working at a university in the UK as Research Associate for two years and my visa is expiring in March). I wanted to ask 1) were you allowed by your university to continue working (and paid) while your visa was expired and 2) did your university HR issue you the certificate of sponsorship (CoS) without ATAS. It seems that at my university, they don't issue the CoS until ATAS certificate arrives, which is also required to apply for visa.
Hi Naman! Regarding your questions: 1) Yes, I was allowed to keep working on my new contract without a visa. There is a law in the UK that you and your family cannot be fired if you have applied for a new visa on time. I do not remember the law number - you might want to check this. I kept working without visa for about 2 months (and got paid). My wife (with a dependant visa) also kept working. 2) Yes, my university issued CoS for me without ATAS. They did not want to do this in advance. So they issued it only 1 week before my visa expired. The CoS included my ATAS application reference number. Hope this helps. Andrey
I would like to ask, when you got the offer to work in the UK as Research Associate, did you get only 2-year skilled working visa or 5-years skilled working visa. Because based on my reading online the validity of the skilled working visa is for 5 years.
@@eleasabsi6715 hello, the validity of sponsored visa is not 5 years if the employment contract is shorter. this is normal for research associate contracts.
@@naman_goel Thank you so much for your reply. What is the category of the visa gotten when applying for the research associate job ? I thought it's 5-year visa because the HR said in the email that my visa will be under the category of skilled worker visa, and according to my reading online I saw the validity of skilled worker visa is for 5 years. For that reason, I thought it's for 5 years, similar to USA postdoctoral visa.
Hi Annie! I guess you can try writing them. As I said in the video, after 142 days, I sent them a letter about my delay together with my visa application. I think their response will depend on how serious your case is. I mean, if you are just waiting 1 month for ATAS, UKVI might not interfere. But if you say that you wait for a long time, plus you need your visa urgently (let's say because of your work or family situation), maybe UKVI will help. But I don't really know how this works.
@@chuscience: how can someone write UKVI regarding his ATAS delay from inside the UK without applying for a visa? There is only a phone number to contact them from inside the UK.
Hey Andrey, Thanks for the detailed information in the video. My situation is sort of similar like you, I am a MSc student and I switched my course from full-time to sandwich to do a placement year. Since I opted for placement my Visa got utilised in placement period and now my visa expires on 22nd May, I applied my ATAS two days ago as no one from my University noticed me about it until I got my CAS statement in email. I am currently in UK and waiting for ATAS certificate, lets suppose If I dont get my certificate until 21st August and I submit my Visa application without ATAS (with similar supporting email as yours) how does the visa application works? how long we can get to submit the document ? what are the timeline we should expect for Visa applications processing ? and also how many days we get as deadline (as you mentioned in your video) to submit the documents ? Thanks in advance, Sanket
Hi Sanket! Sorry, I don't remember all the details and may not give you the correct information for your case. As I see from my notes, it seems that I had to provide the evidence within 1 month after applying for a visa and paying the fees. Note that the good thing is that if you are in the UK and you applied for a visa (or extension), you have the right to stay in the UK until the decision is made on your application. But please talk to your HR or university for more reliable information. Good luck! Andrey
Hi Andrey, thanks for your video, can you please clear something regarding your application, you received ATAS after submitting your application, so this means ATAS was not included in your visa and yet you got your visa approved ? I am currently in the UK and my visa expires in september, if ATAS is delayed should i just apply without it ?
Hi! Yes, I applied for a Visa extension without ATAS. I simply attached my letter (a pdf file with my complaints) as evidence. Also, I my university issued the certificate of sponsorship for me without ATAS. They simply included my ATAS application number as the reference. I guess it was possible since I was already in the UK and wanted to extend my Visa.

Hi! This depends on your current visa type and your next visa/contract. Are you already in the UK? Please speak to your university's HR or student department. Maybe you can apply for a visa without ATAS to stay legally in the UK, and then attach ATAS certificate later. This is very case-specific. Good luck!

Hi Salman! Yes, I think you can apply for a visa now and attach ATAS later. That is, submit the form, pay the fees, and wait for ATAS to submit it as the "evidence". But of course, it is better to discuss this first with your HR to avoid any mistakes. Good luck!
My ATAS certificate is about to expire on 19th September.....I want to extend my ATAS till November.....can I reapply now..... Please reply ASAP sir.........
Hi Vimal! Do you need a new ATAS certificate to apply for a new visa? I think you can apply for a new ATAS certificate at any time. Once issued, it will be valid for 6 months. That is, you will be able to use it to support your new visa applications during the next 6 months. After you get your visa (student or worker), you don't need new ATAS anymore. You can simply study or work using your visa. Good luck! Andrey
Hi! I sent this letter via the visa application system at the last stage of the application (called "evidence"). That is, I applied for a visa, paid all fees, and then attached my letter as evidence. Please double-check if you can do the same thing. This depends on your visa type and if you are in the UK right now. Good luck!
Hi! I do not know the UKVI email. I attached my letter with explanations to my visa extension application instead of ATAS. I have a question about the visa validity as you explained that your visa will be expired. If someone get an offer to work as researcher associate for 18 months in the UK (or let's say for two years), will he/she be given a skilled worker visa? and how long should that visa be valid? because according to my reading online, the skilled worker visa is valid for up to 5 years. Thank you for your help in advance.
Hi! As far as I know, the Skilled Worker visa is issued exactly for the length of your contract. That is, you will get it for 18 months. After 18 months you will need another contract to apply for a new visa. By the way, have you checked the Global Talent visa? It is a better option for researchers.
@@chuscience Could you please tell me when did you apply for skilled worker visa ? According to my reading online and in the website of embassy, the skilled worker visa is for 5 years. Regarding the global talent visa, yes it's better but , according the HR, I can't apply for it for several reasons.
My last Skilled Worker visa was from March 2023 till June 2024 (the length of a contract). Maybe they are changing the rules, I am not sure. I googled "skilled worker duration" - there is a govuk article. It says that "Your visa can last for up to 5 years before you need to extend it". Up to 5 years, but not necessarily. Another website says, "UK Skilled Worker Visa is a long-term work visa and will be initially granted for a period of up to five years (this will depend on the duration of your Certificate of Sponsorship)." So if your sponsorship is only for 18 months, I think your visa will also be for 18 months.
@@chuscience Yes, I got it. So in that case coming to UK is somehow risky specially if it's not guaranteed to get a job after the contract get expired. Do you think, based on your experience, it's easier to get an offer in the UK when you are there compared when you are outside the UK? Or it's the same.
@@eleasabsi6715 It is somewhat easier to get another contract if you are already in the UK. Especially if your professor or department has many projects. They can simply switch you to another project after 18 months to further extend your contract. I would recommend you ask them what to do after these 18 months.

Hello, anyone here who applied around last week of May and received the certificate? I applied on 24th of May it's almost being 25 working days I haven't received it yet and since ATAS being one of my Uni criteria to get my CAS I am really stressed., by 14th of July I have to submit them the certificate.😢
Hi Evans! I could not contact UK Visas and Immigration by email. So, as I explained in the video, I attached my letter (a PDF file explaining my situation) as "evidence" at the end of my visa application. That is, I applied for a visa online, paid all fees, and attached my letter instead of ATAS. Please note that I did this because I was a researcher already working in the UK. You may not be eligible to do the same thing if you are outside of the UK or if you are waiting for a student visa. Please discuss this with your HR. Good luck! Andrey
Hi! I am a student waiting for ATAS. I can't fill my visa application until I have my CAS. CAS is issues by my university after I have received my ATAS. I am currently in the UK and my Visa is going to expire within a month. Any suggestions on what I should do? How can I contact the Visa and Immigration office?
Hi Chaitanya! I got my CoS without ATAS. I explained my situation to the university, and they issued CoS without ATAS. They simply included my ATAS application reference number as proof. I suggest that you speak with the right people in your Uni and ask them, if possible, to issue CAS before you receive ATAS. Maybe the problem is that you need CAS, and I needed CoS (certificate of sponsorship). Anyway, you should speak with your university to find a solution on how you can legally stay in the UK until ATAS arrives.
Thank you very much for providing this useful information, I am at the same situation now and my sense guide me to this video hope I will be lucky enough to through this challenge 🌹🌹🌹
Dear Andre,
First of all a very big thank you for providing such detailed personal insights on the ATAS certificate system & its delays.
Hi Sundeep! Yes, I've heard that this is even more difficult for students. I hope she gets ATAS without significant delays!
Thank you for sharing your experience with the ATAS application. It was very helpful!

Horrible...

Hi Naman!
Regarding your questions:
1) Yes, I was allowed to keep working on my new contract without a visa.
Andrey
thanks@@chuscience
Is it a good idea to inform the uk visa and immigration regarding the atas delay? Will they be able to help.
@@chuscience Thanks for the information. It's just a month now, I'll wait for a couple of months more and if I don't receive I'll write them.

There is only a phone number to contact them from inside the UK.
Hey, I got my ATAS
@@anniesharon6188 Congratulations, how long did it take and what course did you apply for?
Hey Andrey,
Thanks for the detailed information in the video.
Thanks in advance,
Sanket
Very well, thank you Andrey.

Hi Tito! I do not have the email address of the UK Visas and Immigration office. I have only sent emails to the ATAS team (ATAS@fcdo.gov.uk).
In the video, I said that I sent my letter to the Visas team via the visa application system. That is, I applied for visa, paid the fee, and then attached my letter (a pdf file) as evidence to support my case. I guess you can do the same if you are already in the UK and you are applying for a visa extension. Hope this helps.

Hi Zeyad! I don't think there is an effective way of complaining. I mean a way that will speed up your application. However, if you still wish to complain, I would recommend sending complaints to any contact emails of the "Foreign & Commonwealth Office" and "Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office", letting them know how much your case has been delayed. Good luck! Andrey

Good luck!
Andrey
Hey Andrey! In which mail id you send that letter? Could you please provide me that?
Hi! I sent this letter via the visa application system at the last stage of the application (called "evidence"). That is, I applied for a visa, paid all fees, and then attached my letter as evidence. Please double-check if you can do the same thing. This depends on your visa type and if you are in the UK right now. Good luck!
Hi May I know the UKVI contact mail to send my letter of my ATAS delay?
Hello, i got a offer for postdoc from uni of Nottingham and applied for atas under physics, and i received refusal after 29 days, what could be the reason, is that research topic or should i apply another one, thanks for suggestions 🙏🏻

Try to revise your application carefully (maybe with you manager) and resubmit the modified version.
