They go back before that actually, Bob Geldof was also involved in singing We Are The World which Michael co-wrote with Lionel Richie. Geldof sang as part of the backing chorus and allegedly one of the reasons that Prince didn't perform on the record is that he had issue with the fact that Geldof had supposedly referred to him as a 'creep' beforehand.
so many stories behind that We are The World recording still today is one of the major mysteries in contemporaneous pop history. I think that Prince , Barbra Streisand and Aretha Franklin were the most important and relevant artist at that time who missed the chance to be on that recording where the most influential artist around 1984-1986 concurred
Geldof dissed Michael after this award saying he gagged at the script and couldn't finish it coz it praised him too much. He mocked Michael. He also diminished Michael's contribution to We are the World. Geldof is a racist, white privileged, arrogant ignoramus who had the cheek of calling Michael Hubristic.
