Yes, it is a Koto, and it is a traditional Japanese instrument, it has been used in Japan for centuries (since the 7th century).. :) It's the national instrument of Japan and its ancestor is the Chinese zheng. A similar instrument would be the Korean gayageum. ^_^

it is called kargyraa and overtone singing
Yup i do it and it actually soothes my vocal cords instead of hurting. But it takes time and focus.
