Math used to be my absolute favorite subject, I loved the whole “everything can be explained with a logical explanation” approach of the subject. Especially in comparison to History, which, imo atleast, was just about memorizing names and places and dates. In my middle school, my teachers didn’t particularly care about my work, or about which method I used, as long as I got the correct answer. I only had to show my work if I got a problem wrong, so that my teachers could see my thought process and where I went wrong. During the Summer after 8th grade, I took Alg 2 and Geom tutoring sessions to prep for 9th, when I took both subjects. For a majority of the problems, my tutor had to teach us 3 or 4 different ways of solving the problem, because there were multiple high schools near our area that we could be zoned to, and, as she put it, “Once you get to high school, your math teachers… don’t actually WANT to teach math. If they did, they’d be a professor at a university instead. So, they will have an answer key, and if your answer doesn’t exactly match that key, you will lose marks.” I honestly didn’t believe her, but then I got into 9th grade, and, not only was math now heavily focused on memorizing formulas and different forms of equations (atleast in my high schools), but also, my tutor was right. For each problem, we had to show our work, and if we didn’t use the method that OUR TEACHER wanted, even if we got the correct answer using a different method, we lost marks. It was like, we didn’t actually have to use logic to solve the problem, we had to try to figure out what our teacher WANTED us to write down.

I kinda understand the math stuff because it can be useful when going beyond what you are used to or know, but taking 22 points off a test because you didn’t show enough work or didn’t write units when they were constant is insane. I mean I think a good system I’ve had teachers do is they’ll have a maximum amount of points they take of for those kinda errors (ex: lose up to 5 points for not using units). Also yeah, teachers number one job is to encourage learning, so I think it is more important to drive passion for a subject and respect that everyone learns differently. I think one of the reasons I’m so passionate about math is I had some really good teachers who made it fun, and now that I think about it, I remember them saying to learn the way that makes the most sense to you and it helped a lot at the time

I remember in 7th grade my math teacher was a big stickler about units. After he failed me on a test for not saying it was in feet i started to convert everything into millimeters. As the weeks went on he slowly decreased the units of measure (feet>inches>centimeters) till eventually he stopped caring. And there was nothing he could do my answers were always right.

You can’t just write the answer in math. It would be too easy to cheat and make it near impossible for the teacher to know if you understand. But I had teachers just going too far.
When you get out of school will you remember every formulas they showed you? Most probably not! But you can remember there is a formula for one thing and just search it up. I had a teacher that would ask us to remember over 20 formulas by hearth. It was in Calculus 2. I understood the math and how it works but couldn’t remember half the formulas exactly. I failed the class because of that. It seems the teacher asked us more to learn how to memorize things than to understand them.
Another thing I don’t understand why we are asked to do is showing the process of things fully unrelated to the class. I had a physics teacher that would make us give an unsolved answer to his questions because he said the missing steps to the answer were only maths and he wanted to see if we understood his class' content, not the one from another class. It was a great teacher. It made me realize how much time could be wasted in other classes because teachers would generally ask us to do even a part fully unrelated to the class.
My favorite teachers were not thinking themselves that much above the students. They were all still wanting to learn or were still learning whether it was about their course's content, how to plan the course or general stuff. We would ask a question that they didn’t knew the answer and they would say they will comeback with the answer next class and comeback onto the question next class with the answer they found. It felt more like a team effort than a parrot show.

I disagree with showing work is not important if it same as i learned in my school. It was their so the student would not use trick methods to solve the problem and understand how that answer comes from. it would help you to solve different math question easily because you understand the workings of it. So for someone learing math for first time ( I think its grade 01 in America too) Evan if you memorize all the multiplication table it is good for you to understand how 5*6 equals to 30. And as for Unit systems remembering to add them is a good practice and everyone needs to trained for that.

18:25 I have a different take on what they are saying. Simple one and two-digit operations shouldn't need work to be shown, especially if the teacher has seen that you've correctly solved the problems before and you know what you are doing. I was always annoyed with showing my work throughout elementary and some middle school math classes. However, after taking calc 1, 2, and 3, I've learned that showing your work is a crucial part. You can't really do surface integrals and differential equations (if you don't understand those terms, don't worry lol) in you head. I get it that if a problem is super simple, you don't want to show work, but I think the reason teachers have you show work is to start teaching good mathematical habits early on. Also, teachers in middle/high school and beyond will give partial credit for showing work, which is another reason why it's important to start practicing the skill at a young age, even if it is tedious in the moment.

My calculus teacher called me into a private meeting because she thought I was cheating because I wouldn't show my work (I know calculus is a more advanced math that the vast majority of people need to do the work for, but I could do a lot of it in my head). So after arguing with her that I wasn't cheating for a while I eventually just layed down the challenge for her to give me a problem when there were no other students for me to cheat off of. When I correctly did the problem without showing work she said she wouldn't take points off of my previous work, but insisted I showed work for all future tests and assignments. I didn't agree with it, but since my grade depended on it I showed work (which took me significantly longer)

Magi/mage is just another word for wise men and doesn't necessarily have to mean magic but is often construed as such because of more modern things like fantasy genres and D&D, which weren't there during the creation of the word magi. Also all of this is my own knowledge so it may be wrong, so please don't criticize me or "um, actually" me too harshly.

Math teachers are some of the worst teachers and they ruin such a good class

I have a similar situation to Jerome's with math teachers, loved it up till 8th grade, was always good at it. Then high school came along my freshman and sophomore year I had teachers that wouldn't take my way of solving the problems even when the answers were right. Luckily my junior and senior years I had a teacher who not only accepted different methods, but encouraged using them, taught them when you didn't understand the first way and encouraged you to find your own. I'm not sure I'd have made it through college math as easily without having had her those last 2 years. Thank your Mrs. Reichert
