Unfortunately there is no recording of the eighth. It is a pity indeed, as he is second only to Horenstein as a Mahlerian.

@@mankiperukangas7785 Actually I would put Barbirolli ahead of Horenstein. I was fortunate aged 18 to be present when Sir John conducted Mahler 2 in York Minster. It was one of the greatest experiences I have ever had from music.

An extraordinary realisation. For a lover of this smphony since 35 years, living since always in "pure breath Mahler music" as Schoenberg said, it is a fantastic experience to hear that. Thanks! I share it in my Facebook publication as Jean-Baptiste Voisin.

In the 3rd mvmt from 42:20 to the end, only Sir John and HvK know what they're doing. HvK admired Sir John and I'll bet 5 dollars to your favourite charity that vK listened to this before settling with his own approach. Both interpretations are "of another world", as is the music.

Barbirolli a été un de plus grands Mahlériens de tous les temps. Cette symphonie avec la Soprano Irmgard Seefried aurait été la référence pour toujours.

I can hear J B moaning ( it's certainly not singing!).along with the orchestra. It adds a certain magic to the performance.

If it isn't, then it's one where Barbirolli groaned in exactly the same places.

If Alma helped inspire such music she must have been quite a gal.

This was composed before he met Alma. He was working on the 5th when they met.

If you want to go to war that much,
First, have the courage to stand on the battlefield yourself.
If you don't want to send your family to war, you'll need slush funds to give to doctors and officials.
Professional soldiers are a source of income, so even if you die, you will still get paid.
However, ordinary people are "conscripted" soldiers and are not rewarded even if they die. In other words, it is an alternative to "collecting" taxes.
