In today's video I get super real - I admit some faults and mistakes I made while organizing my classroom library when I first began teaching.
When you know better, you do better, and that's what today's video is all about.
Thank you for respecting my vulnerability - I would love to hear from you in the comments below about your thoughts on today's episode - what resonated with you?

I'm coming back to the classroom after a one year leave of absence and this is the biggest change I'm making coming back. It's SO MUCH WORK to reorganize, not to mention a big mental shift after 14 years in education, but I know it's the right thing for kids. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts so candidly - I loved Molly's video but it was also so helpful to hear your thoughts on this. Thank you!

I have my classroom library sorted based on series/genre. I was going to switch to an alphabetic system but thought that my students would have a hard time finding the author’s last name.
For my system, each bin has a picture with the genre and then each book in that bin has a matching sticker with the picture to match to the front of the bin. Hoping this will alleviate books going in the wrong bins!
Thank you for sharing your method!

This is such a great way of organizing books too because authors will typically write in a similar level (Berentsein Bears being level L for example) So if a student enjoys reading that author, chances are they are reading at a similar level :) Awesome!

Thank you for the video- it gives me a lot of food for thought! I taught kinder for 14 years and last year was my first year in Grade 3. I used labelled bins with AR numbers as that is what others in my school were doing, however I like this A LOT. Thanks again!

I totally believe you gotta do what works for you. My levelled bin system worked for me for 6 years, but now I can see why this new way is going to be so much better in my classroom

I used this exact same system my first year in grade 3! I think if I’d spent more time focusing on how to use it and monitoring it in the beginning it would have worked better because I LOVE the look and idea of it! Instead I have my chapter books organized this way by author and series but my picture books are simply fiction bins or non-fiction bins! 🤷🏼‍♀️ I think however you do it is great though! Different groups of kids can handle different routines!

Thanks for the info! That's a great way to organize your picture books! I think I will just organize my read aloud books with one sticker (just for read aloud). I'm planning to do my non-fiction books next.

Research has shown that children will be motivated to read a higher level if it's a subject they are interested in. Ex. I taught 2nd grade, and I had a little boy who loved airplanes. He would read 4th grade level books because he was interested in them.

Team no bins. This year I will no longer have bins in my third grade classroom. I have a guide printed to help them find a particular book by author if they need it. This system is no different from when students go to the school and public library. I will teach students how to focus on an author just as much if not more than the title.

I have chapter books sorted by author. Non-fiction picture books are chronologically sorted by holidays or by themes with non-fiction by category.
I LOVE these labels but how do you keep the price low? I did one sheet at home for just the Halloween books and nearly drained my new ink cartridge. 😬

I am going to be redoing my library as well. I am going in alphabetical order by title for my kinders for now. I think that will be easier for them. Lots of books so a long process.
