That good feeling when a song brings you back to time and reminds you of the good old days when you were younger and everything was much much more calm and peacefull.

    BAEGU (SOLOMON ISLANDS):
Sasi sasi o to aro aro
O angi si nau boroi amu
Ni ma oe e fasi korona
Dolali dasa na, lao dai afuimae
Afuta guau mauri, Afuta wela inomae
Sasi sasi ae o angisi nau
Boroi nima oe e fasi koro na
Dolali dasa na, lao dai afuimae
Afuta guau mauri, Afuta wela inomae
    ENGLISH INTERPRETATION
Young brother, young brother you be quiet
Although you are crying to me
    Your father has left us
He has gone to the place of the dead
Protect the head of the living, Protect the orphan child
Young brother, young brother hey? Although you are crying to me
    Your father has left us
He has gone to the place of the dead
Protect the head of the living, protect the orphan child.
At the core of Sweet Lullaby is the voice and melody of Afunakwa from the Solomon Islands who comes from the island of Malaita (region: Fataleka). Her singing was recorded in 1969 by ethnomusicologist Hugo Zemp in an effort to archive the traditions of a fading culture. This interpretation and lyrics come a translation by her grandchildren. The song is said to be very old and hence the new generation does not understand every word. The song is about a young child crying because he does not see his father with the family. In response his elder sister sung this song to comfort as well as tell him the reality, with an appeal for their deceased father to protect this child in the land of the living (local ancient belief is that the dead care for loved ones they left behind). The old woman also said that the sample, if listened to carefully, used some words and sounds that were added to make it sound more melo. Expression of some words twice, as well pronounciation of most of the words are different from that of normal conversation. Eg. ‘O’ should be OE’, Angiangi should be angisi. This is very common with local traditional songs.
Thanks to the people of the Solomon Islands for the lyrics, translation, and interpretation.

When i was a kid my parents took me and my sister to a very famous national park, the only natural primitive spot on a very popolous city and urbanized city. This song was being played when we entered on an enormous waterfall. I have been looking for this song around 9 or 10 years in my life. The reward feeling of recovering such a poignant memory makes me speechless! Thank you, very very much.

I am saddened by the negative comments below regarding the origins of part of this timelessly beautiful piece of music. Deep Forest should be praised for helping to deepen appreciation of world music in all its songs rather than criticised for adapting a folk melody to a remarkable piece of contemporary music. Such adaptation has been a part of musical composition since man began to sing and is a feature of the most admired classical composers. Brahms used folk dances in one of his most successful compositions, just to cite one example. It is how music is written quite simply. Indeed all artists, whether composers, writers or painters, all use each others' works to build their own and such 'borrowing' makes the resulting work all the richer. To take such a beautiful motif in the folk melody and compose what is undeniably an unforgettable piece, making that motif accessible to listeners all over the world and especially in the Western world which sometimes forgets the rest of the world exists, that is the act of genius to be celebrated. Music, like poetry, literature, indeed any aspect of our culture cannot be owned, as the misguided writer below seems to suggest. This person has missed the point of all musical composition and much else. Listen to the music and the spirit which lies behind it and try to leave such negativity behind. Deep Forest is one of the finest composers alive and someone of enormous personal and artistic integrity. There are so few in the world of corporate music today. We should feel grateful that Deep Forest exists in the face of things like One Direction and much else. And of course any video accompanying any song is simply an artistic interpretation of the video maker, rarely of the musician behind the song. Does it matter if it represents Africa? It could as easily show any family group from anywhere since the emotions behind this wonderful song are universal. That is what deep Forest is telling us. Unite rather than divide.

As most of you (hopefully) are aware - the original "lullaby" originated from a woman in the Malaita province in the Solomon Islands (in the South Pacific islands) but was unfortunately misappropriated by Deep Forest and made to seem as though it was sang in a West African language. I know this because I am originally from the Solomon Islands and it is so strange for me to see these bizarre interpretations of the meaning as well as its wide use in Western media and live concerts (with the lead singer being a random black African-styled female). Hopefully people can look deeper into these "hauntingly beautiful" songs to appreciate it deeper instead of believing anything they first read.

Annie, do the words translate into English and, if so, do they make sense.
I know what you mean about Deep Forest's misappropriation but they have brought it to a wide audience so don't be too hard on them. From my listening ear it's a lovely song.
A translation, would, if you could, be great.
      All the best

Just found this Biscayforce, I have no idea if any of it is true but thought you'd like to know. Personally I'd like to think it is correct as its quite a beautiful but sad translation.
Little child, little child be calm
      Even though you still weep
      Your father has left us
Protect the elderly, protect the orphan.
Little child, little child be calm
      Even though you still weep
Your father has gone to the afterlife
Protect the elderly, protect the orphan

This is an interview with the woman's family. It was recorded in 1969 and she is now dead. The song is a lullaby to a child who's parents are both dead. She sings that she will care for the child and to comfort it.

I love thhis song is so beutiful and sad at the same time. I just want to share some information that i foud in Wikipedia, The song is based around a traditional Baegu lullaby from the Solomon Islands called "Rorogwela", and uses a vocal sample originally recorded by ethnomusicologist Hugo Zemp in 1970 and later released by UNESCO as part of their Musical Sources collection. The lyrics refer to a young orphan being comforted by his older brother despite the loss of their parents.

I like how it shows children playing then you see adults playing similarly. You also see the little boy with his thumb in his mouth then you see an adult doing the same thing. You even see an adult laying off someone's lap after you see the baby! So, in some ways adults aren't that much different from children after all! It's adorable really but also sad because many people are bitter and mean in real life....they'd be to chicken to show the more human side of themselves!!

@zedremy Although the Afunakwa controversy/mislabelling on the cd cover is inexcusable, I think it should be noted that Deep Forest have (according to Wiki) donated a percentage of their profits from sales of their first 2 albums to help Zaire's pygmy population in their transition to an agrarian culture, as well as Hungary's gypsy population. They also actively support the Sana Madagascar Association, showing that they're clearly not intending to rip off the people who provide their samples.

Back in 2010 I saw this music video on Czech tv channel while visiting ex’ parents during Christmas in Prague. Then bf called the tv channel asked who is the artist making the song. 2019 today Still listening. I was a naive Asian girl with no ideas regarding to substance abuse ( prescription drugs, alcohol ext.) ex was my first Caucasian bf, a young in heart, wild Czech , turned sociopath due to long history of substance abuse. But still I appreciated I met him, for awareness for substance abusive behaviors, going sailing, almost get arrested in Thailand etc.
Ex thinks he is a little prince and I was his rose. Years goes by I figured out I was never the rose , his substances were.
Still overall in my mind we shared a very intimate tastes in music, thank him for introducing me Dead Can Dance, Kate Bush, Charles Bukowski, Nick Cave & bad seeds, ect. and we always enjoying listening music like Enigma, cafe Del Mar, sometimes well Sade or Leonard Cohen together. (And ofc his significant contribution in introducing Andrew Blake.)
I believe he has an artistic heart, but that heart just too heavy for me to carry eventually.
Years goes by I still coming back to music like Deep forest, New age, continuing exploring more , and stick with psychedelic rock, dream pop/ shoe gazing (Cocteau twins), trip pop(hooverphonic), 80s uk music invasion, many many...
I guess music is important, for interracial couple like me and my past relationships there are moments as lost in translation, but music trends passing it.
For years I ve been feeling out of places mostly, from Australia, China, Taiwan, and most recently studied in UK , then coming back to Asia living close to family. Lone cat lady like me coming from relationships to relationships , friendship to friendship , middle age crisis to depression (like my Czech ex) , but I was never turning into substance abuse, and I think music keep me accompany and hold my sanity (lol)
I glad when I feel nothing i could still listen to music and memorize my prime time.
I ve been looking and searching for stuff quite a long time But I never could find it. I gain wise by aging. But also get stupider (bad at remembering things). Sometimes I think forget about it, I will just give up on searching. Worked for years I realized I actually never lived in the present. I always worried about future and look back into past. I need to stop retrieving like this with my long nags.
Anyways, sweet lullaby, still listening , hopefully tonight it will help me sleep soundly.
Coyote is gone, old soul set in :)

Macdonald Diko Are you sure? The song "Rorogwela", a traditional Baegu lullaby from North-West Malaita sung by Afunakwa was recorded by Swiss-French ethnomusicologist Hugo Zemp in 1969 and later released by UNESCO as part of their Musical Sources collection in 1973 and re-released in 1990. Hugo Zemp raised an objection to the use of this sample and other samples in his collection. I believe the proceeds of the sale of this album goes to UNESCO.

I have been looking for this song for as long as I can remember. I didn't remember the name of the song, or the artist. But now that I've found it... I am infinitely happy.

Beautiful song. I remember watching the video 20 years ago. MTV even used it in an episode of The Real World (season 3) back then.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...much like an opinion. Some people see no beauty in the music you treasure the most and vice versa

Aye, the legends are true. This was in a time long, long ago, a magical and forgotten era...
    The 80's.

This song played on a channel called SBS as I was a child, and I personaly find it very nostalgic. Beautiful, touching, and warm. Leaves me with the question - What kind of world do we live in?

the world has always been greed and ruthless, but amidst all that there was also beauty like this. and we are fortunate to be able to appreciate it. those who dislike this song sadly have no heart or brain and are sad souls who need to be pampered by life in order to feel any joy of it. i'm not hating! just honest:) peace

The best in this video,-and I like, of course- in the proyect of the director of the video: the trip of the little girl who looks trough the frame, to see if the image fit in this (chaotic, petty and cynical) world; in a poetic proposal.
