I’m a longtime fan of Bobby McFerrin as well as jazz and classical music. It was so good to see the respect and admiration by the other musicians here for Bobby’s unique musical ability. His collaboration with the audience for “Ave Maria” brought them into the orchestra too.
I had a masterclass with him several weeks ago and was wondering the same thing! He is indeed a pianist, but he told me that it's a transfer from when he played clarinet all throughout his childhood.

From memory Bobby McFerrin actually studied at university to be a pianist before becoming a professional singer - from what I can see, he appears to miming piano keys to help him identify/pitch the notes or something (he moves further down the microphone the lower the pitch of the note)? Similar to other singers moving their hand up/down to hit notes. Only a guess, mind - other explanations welcome.
