@@andu1854 I have a career of about 15 years in wildly different fields in tech. Im yet to see a CEO actually work.
Our CEO only had one job, he gave a presentation every quarter presenting data he got from the financial group.
So he spent a week making a video and selecting the music and have some charts in power point every 3 months.
Otherwise, he was never in the office. He had this big idea our product should use the internet about 10 years after the internet was big. Some people say managment is just there to have someone to blame vs the board members.
My former employer had no CEO for over 2 years during covid. They couldn’t get anyone. And guess what? It was fine. The execs kept to a routine of meetings, took responsibility for their areas, etc. Work kept chugging along for us employees. I’m not saying the business thrived. But it was fine. There also wasn’t a massive improvement once a CEO was found.
Tell me again why these people get paid so much?

Because they make crucial decisions about what companies even do and assume the risk of those decisions. Marxists seldom talk about unsuccessful CEOs that go into millions of dollars of debt because their company failed while the workers for the failed company still get their agreed-upon wage or salary

The CEO's job is to maximize profit on behalf of the investors, and usually that takes the form of maximizing the exploitation of the workforce.

This guy got his MBA. I recommend everyone pursue an MBA degree so you can learn and realize the "principal - agent problem" and the main goal of a company is maximizing shareholder wealth. It's engrained into c suite execs to think this way . I hated every second of business school, justifying its own warped theories and principles

Seen a lot of ceo’s come and go. Mostly made a lot of bad decisions because they didn’t understand how their companies worked and were too arrogant or lazy to ask. That being said, I agree that not all of them are bad, but almost all of them are wayyyy overpaid.

I am an employee of Public Storage (Resident Property Manager). PS is the largest storage company in the nation, bigger than the next two leading competitors combined. My district alone made approximately 13.9 million dollars a year. After two years of busting my ass for this company, I was just recently given a cost of living increase....of 0.23 cents an hour. Which amounts to about 1.95 a day, before taxes.
I'm a shareholder in PSA. We also got a cost-of-living increase back in February; it was 50% (I'm talking about the dividend hike).

What I love about CEO's is the overarching importance of image. When you look at their office, it's pristine. They either do no actual work whatsoever, or they are so efficient that any task that comes up is completed instantly.
Right for the most part. Leo Fender is a ceo but also a designer and inventor whose desk is a mess with designs stacked up bits and pieces of those designs.

@@nobodytrulyimportant record credit card debt is a textbook hallmark of entitlement, not poverty. People are buying things on credit that they can’t afford because they feel entitled to them. As for healthcare, I would argue our bloated healthcare system is caused more by our lack of health as a priority and is more indicative of overconsumption and lack of healthy lifestyles (entitlement)

I'm the CEO of my life - except that I can't decide when to work, or how long, which already predetermines when I have to go to bed and when to wake up. And I don't get to decide my pay or my benefits package... So aside from all of that, I'm totally the CEO of my life.
You need a board of directors. Also, try to get yourself listed on the NYSE; you'll get an instant injection of cash without really giving up much of anything, except for a 10-15% dilution in the equity you currently own in yourself...
I've had people say CEOs deserve their obscene salaries & bonuses because they 'take the biggest risks', but funnily enough they have trouble explaining exactly what those risks are and why they're comparatively worse than the risks the low-level workers face

Look at what Unity (Game engine company) just did. The CEO sold off a bunch of stock, then they made a horrible announcement that screwed over thousands of game developers, then the CEO stepped down (took his money and ran).
Like the thing they announced was so half-assed that no one actually understood how it would work. It was very clearly a planned move on the CEO's part.
That's supposed to be illegal, but because the rich are also political donors, they get away with it.
That misconstrues the CEO's incompentence as ingenious self-centred malice.
The idea that the CEO is a mastermind buys into the connotations that they're smart. They're not smart. CEOs are human and they're stupid, no more brighter or dumber than the rest of us.
The truth is even more damning imho. The CEO sold off a very miniscule percentage of his stocks, an small amount that was already part of an agreed periodic normal sell off of stocks (an agreement many company executives make so they can sell their assets without spooking the market).
What really happened was that that CEO of Unity was nothing but stupid. An idiot that doesn't understand how the industry works, the product that he's selling, nor even the economic model that made his company stand out and successful in the first place. I heard pretty convincing rumours that he became CEO as part of a hostile takeover plot by the board to take control away from the original founder who was passionate about making a good product at fair prices for the sake of the art of game creation. His stupid short-term greed and by extension the greed of the board is what damned an entire company to failure. No developer worth their salt will now do service with a company that has shown themselves to alter the deal at any given moment for a quick buck
Increase short term gains at the expense of all else. That's the best definition of a CEO's job I've ever heard. Great video!
The last company I worked for had been running itself into the ground for years, unbeknownst to me. The CEO pitched this positive "speed up to catch up" because they knew they were falling behind competitors. Then the pandemic hit. Then my dog got diagnosed with an inoperable nasal carcinoma. We were all expected to keep this breakneck pace due to leadership's failing, despite all the collective trauma we were going through. The whole motivation was so they could finally claim to have a "new" product and sell the company. Then they laid me off, implying my performance wasn't up to par. Yet the VP of product kept his job until he quit, despite the open secret that he didn't know what he was doing and the CEO got her cut and left.
Since CEOs don't take useful workers' and their complaints seriously, why does the CEO care wtf workers do or don't do on the job? Why would they care? It would make ZERO difference to the CEO if the workers all just quit.
I just wish companies with bad CEOs could just up and move. Just enough employees in the company agree and just choose some new bosses and leave.
As a CEO myself, CEOs exist to maximize stock wealth. As the person who could help employees more than anyone, if you want me not to, I expect and will get THE largest bribe possible not to. We don't work for the company, or it's interests (tangentially, yes). We work to enrich the other board members (ourselves). Our roles are clear. And if you VOTED with your stock shares, we couldn't. That's what stock is: a vote. You don't use yours, we do. Seeing any political parallels?

I'm not sure that I would be excited about the prospect of an AI sitting at the top of the corporate structure, making decisions for the whole company with the basis for all of those decisions being to "maximize shareholder value"...
@@wtaylor9408 I agree. I'm certainly not excited by the idea, but it's very interesting. The idea of AI "replacing" (as opposed to assisting) anyone is something I'm generally* not supportive of.
The board of OpenAI just watched this video and fired Sam Altman.
The ONE place where AI is a natural fit is CEO -- it could make less-biased decisions, won't shake the company down for a golden parachute, and you pay it in electricity!
I'll grant you the last two. As for the bias, it really depends on the training data and what kind of debiasing is done. One of the big problems with AI is the veneer of objectivity.
@@allanjmcpherson It will still probably be less biased than the vast majority of CEOs. Once it truly has all the information and training it needs, most of the remaining bias will be inherent to the situation and objective. No positive or negative relationships to influence its thinking, and no ideals other than the goals its given. Likely to happen given enough time.

I can see some other objections as well. Why are we trusting that these CEOs actually understand what machine learning is and is not capable of? Is there a good argument for even doing this rather than just employing worker control?
anywho, there is no need for CEO's to make more than 100x their average employees. that shit needs to change ASAP bc the shrinking of the middle class due to things like this, is what is tearing apart the fabric of our country. in my opinion our extremely unfair economy is behind a lot of the problems we have in our country today.
i agree with this, but it reminded me of something that always confused me about the rise of the alt-right lately, and things like Q-anon. which is that you would assume that most of the people who subscribe to these movements would be disenfranchised, but to me it seems there are equally as many well-off people taking part in these movements as people who are poor.
@@darkhole9695 as for the well off people that take part in those movements, i would say the ones that take part in the conservative movements do it to protect their wealth. Wealthy people know that to protect their wealth, property and assets their best bet is to vote republican due to their disregard for the middle and low class, and the ideology that, "the private sector does it better than govt."
now as for the wealthy individuals who take part in the liberal side of the exchange, they do so to make it seem as like the wealthy person, or corporation are for liberal movements as long as it does not affect them monetarily, so therefore the wealthy take part in civil rights, lgbtqia+ movements, abortion rights, etc, etc aslong as none of those things effect economic policy that would hinder them. by the wealthy putting all of that on a loudspeaker they also keep peoples eyes off the ball when it comes to the economy. Yes all those things i listed are VERY important rights and freedoms, but for this country to even begin to continue to discuss any of those things i listed we need to correct the grievances in our economy first therefore people cant scapegoat any individuals for who or what they are. Everything always comes back to money. Everything.

I think they'll keep a CEO around. The most important thing for them is to have a fall guy. Someone to take up the heat for the decisions they want and the blame when so something goes wrong, while they keep filling their pockets.

250 years of inequality can't be all bad.
The people I talk too tend to not question anything when a person who makes more money than them gets a raise. Like when executives get raises. But these people get upset when someone poorer than them or their neighbor gets a raise.
I mean, I've been calling corporations 'dumb AI' for years now... Because most businesses are focused on profit above all else, which means everything comes down to numbers - therefore any decision made in service of making more money, can be made by an AI.

Imagine a world where companies actually worked for innovation to the benefit of all society, we would be decades ahead of where we are now technologically and culturally. Capitalism is supposed to uphold innovation, but it has been failing for a while now
Capitalism is not inherently bad... but like any ideological foundation, if it goes unchecked and uncapped it will ruin itself.

Fun thought experiment: take any major corporation, and imagine their CEO going on strike for a month. Now imagine the workers of that company doing the same. Which do you think will harm the company more?
Imagine that with the majority of this country's film industry last year. They lost BILLIONS.
If someone can hold multiple CEO positions it cannot be all that hard to do.
The idea of "possible millionaires" is silly. Mainly because of the amount of work you would have to do and the kind of person you would have to be. It might just make you incredibly unhappy. CEO's and corporations cannot be trusted. This is mainly because they priotrize profit, which reduces sustainability and ultimately drives the whole system downward. Without sustainability everything will come crashing down. Putting everyone at risk. It's important to have a sustainable system.
The existence of profit does not mean that it’s not sustainable
Recently saw a video that talked about business stuff. In it the guy mentioned that most CEOs get their positions based on tenure/how long they have worked and not on actual success. this leads to to people who do the same thing over and over again and just move on to the next job after getting kicked out for ruining the company while younger ones who actually have made companies successful or even better for the customers and workers are ignored because they don't have a padded resume.
the true test of a CEO is when they have to helm a massive, declining company. most CEOs in that position fail because success comes from having a good product + LUCK
CEOs should have learned a lesson from Sears. And how their CEO, who followed libertarian practices to the letter drove the company into the ground.

Soseeking to engage in that idealized free market guaranteed failure.

You can't scapegoat an AI for poor performance
Great analogy. That drug is positive quarter over quarter growth no matter how small. If sales dipped then it's time to fire people to often a reduction in revenue. Then just spend that money AND RETRAIN NEW TALENT the following year. Maddening process that touches every aspect of our lives.
It's not a fake job, it's an overcompensated job. There is a difference.
Humans self orginize instinctivly, without a set leader.
And our instintive orginization yeilds better results then artifical management structures.
The diffrence is approx a 30% success rates for top down managment structures (like CEO and management) compared to an approx 90% success rate for bottom up or naturally managed projects.
Some stregnths include the ability to make and standardize changes across the teammembers effected that are useful, helpful, and implemented same day they are thought of by the team, the ability to litterally just try two compeating ideas rather then debate them, a building soldarity between all teams within an orginization rather then compeation that promotes voluntary wage reductions during difficult times rather then lay-offs
and thats just the surface level, more deeply without management including CEO's there is not a movement against the human instincts reducing chaos, non-compliant work, and wasted time, while making an orginization more fluid and more capable.

I work for a logistics company that is employee owned and it’s night and day different. The raise I got last year was $2/hr as a delivery driver and we get ~20% of our paycheck in our retirement fund from the company

I don't know if anyone is aware of the Escapist crew leaving because their editors in chief got fired, but I believe someone like Nick Calindra from Second Wind is the ideal leader. You could consider him a "CEO" of Second Wind, their new channel. I think coporations have things to learn from this.

Yep, my company loves to claim they're a "meritocracy" but I have gotten great reviews and no raises for over 28 months "because of the economy"
A lot of these companies would do way better if CEOs cut their pay.
If CEOs as a rule don't actually do much, it's even more sharp in the entertainment 'business', an 'industry' where nobody actually knows how things work because they are in constant flux due to the tastes of consumers and the need to produce propaganda for the mono-culture. The premise that anyone in management in hollywood is worth more money than an extra is insane, at least the extra adds value to something, entertainment execs stick their noses in to tell the people who do know what to do to do a worse job.
Obvious vanity pieces sharing 'secrets of the rich' make me want to bang my head on the table. The system is simply rigged, and your outcomes are mostly predetermined in life by your starting position, the rich didn't get rich because they made 'good decisions', and most of them didn't even get lucky, they inherited their wealth or got a huge head start from nepotism. Oh yeah, if you actually look at who is allowed into the 1% they are universally right wing nutters when you dig deep enough, even those with a surface veneer of progressiveness, they don't let progressives get rich for obvious reasons, this is why your starting position matters so much, if your parents raised you to be a good citizen you have no chance of becoming rich/famous for example, most rich people have the brains to keep a façade up, but because they are letting dumber and dumber people have more and more valuable positions it's getting obvious, because people like trump can't be bothered to pretend to be half-decent.
People want to be CEOs because it means doing stupid things, gaining a shit ton of money, and not being held to same standard as the labor.
And, when your stupid decisions inevitably catch up to you, getting far too much money as you're shown the door.

I think the role is too wide for us observers to actually say that a CEO does “x”. A company that has 100 million in revenue in an industry that is NOT sexy (let’s say aluminium processing) will probably look WAY different than these well known hype-job companies. If you’re working for a company that is completely unknown to the public your role as CEO will not involve a lot of talk shows and ass kissing, it will probably include a lot more strategy and, well, boring stuff
Could you imagine if corporations saw their employees as investing too through their time and livelihoods. 🤔

It would also be nice if more job hunting website asked companies to fill in what they've done on that particular front. Think that would be both beneficial to both employer and prospect employee too.

Employee base pay should be tied by a percentage to the top paid person in the company. That would bring up wages for everyone at the bottom and force companies to reconsider short term investments in their top earners.

Limit the highest paid position to ten times the minimum salary by using taxes
Watch the minimum wage rise dramatically. Watch currency values drop accordingly. Institute digital currencies valued in terms of renewable energy. Pay people to mitigate climate change. Survive the next 100 years.

One of the main innovations that let so many companies offshore and lay off workers was the computer. It eliminated millions of well-paid jobs.
If we had a better economic system we could have used them to work shorter hours and eliminate drudgery, but then you couldn't have Jamie Dimon snarking off on TV all the time. You decide which would be better.

@@analyticalmindset ehh, I'm not entirely convinced of this, at least not with the current approach. It's too error prone and expensive to replace most white collar jobs (or at least the ones I've seen) or drivers this generation.
Long term, maybe it's more of a threat to jobs but we'll see if we can even get there.
@@thedudewhoeatspianos of course long term , but as a data analyst I'm seeing alot of AI driven analytical tools being done very well. All you would need is someone to properly present the data. Which in theory should make an analyst job easier , but the C suites will see this as an opportunity to cut costs and delegate the presentation responsibilities to another role 9k some downsizing and consolidation of 2 roles into 1... Without a pay increase

Regarding Main Streets: If you ever make it to Rush, Ireland: I can show you around the main street here. It's a short main street, but it has a great place to hang out with benches, near a supermarket, so you can get some snacks and a drink and peoplewatch as well as gullwatch...
If all the cashiers and shelf stockers and such at walmart all quit at once, the company would grind to a halt and be out of business overnight. If the ceo quit, literally absolutely nothing whatsoever would happen. All the stores would continue operating as normal.
So no, its not a real job.

So please stick with me on this one. I promise I'm attempting to dialogue with respect....
Statistically speaking, Asexuals ARE others. They make up less than 1% of the world population. I'm a cis gay man. I'm also an "other". I represent less than 4% of the world population. Personally, I think it's ok to be an "other". To me it embodies uniqueness, specialness, a sense of identity. I don't want to be ordinary. I like being something noteable. A break from the ordinary/boring.
With this in mind, I personally think it's far healthier to embrace our "otherness". To be an "other" is not bad. We cannot clame to value deversity while still claiming everyone should fit in and NOT be an "other".
Basically... I think we should stop trying to normalize everything.... and just learn to celebrate being weird.
Any opinions to the contrary are welcome and respected. I have nothing but love and respect for every letter in the LGBTQAI+ community. I just want us all to be happy... And I believe that is accomplished internally.

So by not stigmatizing people who are virgins it allows them to be still unique but not in danger

Sometimes CEOs recive as salary shares of the company they run, that means that they can raise their salary artificialy by raising the value of the shares, they dont need to produce more or expand the company, all that they care is stock value...

It's somehow both ironic and fitting that CEOs should push so hard to implement the same kind of technology that may soon replace them. It fits with their short term mindset.
CEOs take credit when things are good, but avoid it when things are bad, then accept millions if they do a bad job.
You can't solve every problem in the world by starting a business.
Main St Tarrytown NY in the house! Also, the fact we have to explain how CEOs making massive chunks of a company's profit while workers struggle to make enough money to exist in society, is already a huge problem.
As someone who has worked closely with both CFOs and CEOs, the answer is yes lol. The only time this hasn't been the case is when the CEO is also a co-founder who actually knows the product they're building. Does that justify the compensation? No, but it's a little bit easier to tolerate than some glorified middle manager like Jobs getting paid to ruin their workers' lives.

I was a part of a nonprofit that had an artistic director/CEO who was giving himself a massive salary while our volunteer cast members were given $5 dollar lunch perdiam and the whole org was under by nearly 2 million dollars.
Then he was fired as CEO and replaced with a guy who managed to get the org. out of the hole, put an additional 2mil in the bank, and get cast members proper compensation all in 2 years. But he was ousted because he "didn't understand the organizations mission..."
He was a legitimate good CEO and the board of directors hated him because he spoke truth to the 2 people who ran the org for 20 years.

Alpharetta, GA has a thriving Main Street with tons of restaurants, bars, retail, and public space. The catch is that mid sized condos in the area are $500,000+ and any detached homes are at least $1 million. Rent is similarly very high- 2 bedrooms walking distance to downtown costs $3k.
Walkable, thriving downtowns are desirable so housing prices go crazy.
I only know two things about this: I would had watched that "Batgirl" movie, and all the Scooby Doo ones they threw into a vault when Zaslav took over, while there's nothing I feel like watching on "Max" right now, in particular that "Velma" show, F that "Velma" show. And it sounds to me like all companies in the U.S. could pay like 50 bucks an hour and grant all existing benefits to their workers, if their CEOs got paid as much as a regular manager, so F every single CEO too. They are nothing but huge social parasites and an obstacle in the progress of technology and society in general.
