Because it’s not objective analysis. It’s making up a plausible hypothesis, then finding isolated data points that support it. The previous fast style and screen annotations were clearly a ploy to distract from critical evaluations of what was being “analysed”.
You summed it up perfectly at the end there about England and I hope Borthwick sticks to his guns because I think people are forgetting how dire we actually were at the end of the Eddie Jones Era. (im a massive Eddie fan btw) but you can tell borthwick does actually care deeply.
Yeah alot of people glossed over the fact right after the 2019 world cup Eddie jones literally stated he is going to hide England's attack until the 2023 world cup so it's a shame he couldn't see his plan though.
I am a South African in England and I agree with what he says at the end. The media is brutal, I really don't think it helps the sports teams here. It's not just rugby it's all sports, the amount of pressure they pile on is crazy. I thought England played very well until that blip at the end. I think if the media laid off and that team is allowed to build they'll be good
All teams sub the flyhalf at some point, especially if you have 3 BIG games in 3 weeks. And Ford scored the most drop goals of the RWC 2023 and media is talking like he is a chocking choice.
I am a South African who also lived in England for 11 years... And their media is undoubtedly their Achilles heel for EVERYTHING - not just sport. Their media is squarely to blame for (amongst other things) Boris Johnson becoming Mayor of London AND Prime Minister (both resulting in a downward spiral)... for Brexit even being a thing (let alone being voted for)... for the Nanny State culture... for the pressure on their politicians to resign over any little thing (leaving the House of Commons with lower and lower quality over the decades)... and just the general negativity in that country. It's the worst "media" (propaganda of billionaires) in the world.
I'm a South African and a massive boks supporter but even I will say that Marcus Smith is something else. His conversions and penalty kicks give the finger to gravity. So not only can he kick effectively he make make it stylish too.
the PSDT try is just the kind of thing which genuinely make me hold him up there as one of if not the greatest springbok. The work rate, this time, paying off with one of the cheekiest tries i have ever seen
I have been waiting patiently for this video. Thank you for turning these around so quickly! Also ... have to say it ... can't hold it back ... any ... longer ... GO BOKKE!
Well said gents! This was a fantastic game with continual shifts and twists. I loved how both teams persisted in playing their new styles but were happy to slip back into their tried and tested tactics to withstand a bit of pressure or dominance from their opponent. I thought SA were lucky but they made the most of their luck (something they haven’t always done.) I enjoyed the game… and then I rage quit halfway through the first question put to Genge! He was asked “What is going wrong (for England)…” These guys work damn hard to represent England and do the country proud, only to be treated like naughty schoolboys! It’s nonsense. I am a SA supporter by the way.
came for this comment so I didnt have to type it myself, England played excellently and gave us a run for our money, as a supporter it was nail biting.
I have seen people get stepped, bull dozed or just left for dead but that was the first time I ever saw a player get "flinched". After he caught that ball I doubt Kolbe moved more than six inches as he gave poor Freddie the matador's cape.
Finally someone tells the truth as it is! I don't support England, but I genuinely feel for them, since they are so close to make it to the top but everybody unfairly criticise them. Thanks Squidge!
I completely agree about the English media, they’ve been atrocious and needlessly vicious. Players and coaches are human, they get subconsciously influenced by the low-hanging fruit narratives. I wish media spent more time analyzing the actual rugby of it all. Which, Robbie and Will - yall have been spoiling us with so much amazing content, keep it up and it’s much appreciated!!
An important point on JvP's charged down box kicks: England skipper, George, asked about EE being offside. Ref conveyed that TMO checked and EE was onside because the ball at the base of the ruck wasn't under the leg of the last man in the ruck immediately before JvP lifts it, so when JvP had hands on the ball at the base thinking he had a moment to compose himself before kicking, the ball was already out. After this was explained, there were no further charge downs. If you go to 14:19 in this vid and play at 0.25 speed, you can actually see JvP move the ball giving it half a twist on the ground so he can pick it up unimpeded by George's leg. But the unimpeded path for him to pick it up is exactly because it is no longer under George's leg and so it is out and play on. Looking at this you can also see EE's timing is just about perfect. (When watching this live, I thought EE was offside. Shockingly, sometimes the refs get things right.) Now, as Squidge noted, it is likely that SA studied JvP's process to box kick to maximise their chances of charging him down. Why, of why, would JvP and his coaches not be aware of the risk of being charged down by anyone of EE, PSDT, RGS? The fact that JpV was able to adjust after the two charge downs says that he knew how to adjust before the first charge down, but didn't because the risk wasn't properly assessed.
🇿🇦. I completely agree that England is a bloody good team and extremely close to being a dominating world-beating team - even if the Boks, AB's, French and Ireland are definitely a step ahead of them. Australia is looking very promising (high time), but a few swallows does not make a summer ...yet. But writing off a team that lost two games by the smallest of margins (AB's and Australia) is purely an emotional reaction. We can't tell exactly which way the pendulum will swing, but it's quite possible that the Roses will make it to a RWC semi or final once again.
14:21 you are correct, on the broadcast Nyakane stated that Eben does exactly this (study 9’s) week in order to to charge down box kicks week in week out. It was also stated that Rassie has selected 50 different players for the Green and Gold jersey this year
Smith is a genuinely top class flyhalf he reads the game beautifully and hs the skill set to pul the strings - England are so close to turning the corner. Wilco got some stick for not making that tackle but there was a collisions between Ox and Siya, so all in all a good try and more to it, as I did not see this in real time... well spotted !
Very good summary of where England are now, I think they really need to take a break from the external pressure, maybe have some experienced coaches brought in for a few weeks to calm things down and work on temperament
Benny Hill music at the end was a nice touch, amd then youtube finished it off with a video suggestion of Warwick Gatland "stay or go" whilst the music playing. Kinda ironic 😂
This game reminds of chess where people just crack under pressure and then continue to spiral out of control even if the better player is losing or not doing as well the better player usually dont crack under pressure as easily maybe its the same phenomenon in rugby where better teams make comebacks so late in the game.
the best part is, I was just thinking about when this clip will be out, and I came here and found Squidge had uploaded it. Thanks, Our habits sync nowadays.
Thank you. Great analysis. I'm having a good laugh at some of the comments, as usual....... "I agree with your analysis ...except...". followed by the well-trodden simplistic "Ford not good enough", "Steward too slow", "Borthwick not up to the job", etc. etc. Most media & social media need the clicks, the controversy, the talking points. Even those who should know much better giving player ratings between 3 & 8 that shows little understanding of the game they claim to love. So a massive thank you for another considered review. 👍👍👍
Love the fact that Cameron Hanekom will be the 52nd Bok player to get a cap this Autumn series. Rassie and Co is very conscious of the fact that the team is aging and making sure to breed new blood, but without the usual fall off in form.
The main challenge with the current Springbok squad is just how they will match you with everything. You play a rush defense, they'll kick and chase well... you play a deep defense, they have the running ability...defensively they have excellent tacklers (even the small boks tackle like 95kg centers)... you also can't out-scrum them... they're similar to that 2010's NZ team who just had your number in every department. The only way to play them is to make sure you kick points on offer, and to rely on unexpected moments (like M Smith's dummy drop goal in the 3rd minute) to capitalize on point opportunities and NOT to try and beat them in the physical department. Another weakness the boks have is the faster smaller players make breaks and end up away from support, this presents rare opportunities to win the ball back/get a penalty
Thankyou for countering the "George Ford Bad' narrative - it feels like it's just the most obvious thing to blame so everyone's jumping on it without actually watching what was happening on the pitch
Great stuff. Excellent point at the end. I thought England played some really good stuff on Sat. They're finally starting to score some great tries. I give them a good chance of winning the SN. Also great to see Sky Sports doing their bit to promote the game (not)

As a South African, you please need to make a video on the Wallabies' turn around/"upsets" they have casued. ESPECIALLY Tom Wright. Man he is good at rugby!
If you want a coach that will deliver you a world class backline, you go with Schmidt. Did it for Ireland, did it for NZ, that’s what he’s doing for the Wallabies
In the last 20 minutes England had a series of 3 entries in the 22, covering roughly 10 phases. All gave away pens, turnovers or dropped balls. In not one of them did Smith actually touch the ball. All ended in mistakes at the ruck, and 2/3 started with a dodgy set-piece. I would like to see more of a desire to create opportunities for the backs. That quick tap penalty in the last 78 from Smith is a great example - born of pure desperation (as we needed 2 scores in 2 minutes). Yet no other player was thinking about going quickly and giving it a go. Similarly, we had a turnover earlier in the game, and one forward passed to another to truck it up. England have the players to play loose when it is on, but seem to lack the desire, particularly in the last 20 where the forwards seem to tired to keep up, and only Smith seems to want to go for it. I don't know if this is player decision-making, coaching tactics and strategy, or just tiredness (that blitz defence is more tiring) but it feels like we make more mistakes in play, and have less ambition during those last 20 minutes - even against NZ and Aus where we did have chances to win.
Hi Squidge. I would'nt want my company to be called the Antione Du Pont of Websites because that would mean I am a one trick pony that only shines when I'm competing against mediocre competition! Now if you call my company the Cheslin Kolbe of Websites it means that I can play anywhere in the backline, strong in the aerial play(ask old Freddie), hooker against Australia so that my captain can go score Etc! 😁😁 Squarespace take note!!
@3:58 does Earl's drop really go backwards here? I've seen a lot similar to that being called a knock? Not being mopey or funny, just really want to understand the ruling here!
I get what your saying about England being on the verge, but it also seems to me that if you take out Marcus from this team, what have England got? They don’t score any tries against New Zealand, all of the tries in the Australia game are from smith grabbers or smith line-breaks. And this game he caused the first. What other top team do you look at and go without this one player they wouldn’t have scored 3/4 of their tries, France? No Dupont played pretty average in attack and they still scored a few against NZ New Zealand? No, Springboks? No Ireland? No It seems like their entire attack i just bits of smith brilliance. And one player just isn’t enough to win these games, especially as in the 6 nations teams are undoubtedly going to be analyzing him pre game and not letting him play.
If my grandmother had wheels she would be a bike. NZ, Aus and RSA had bounces of the ball go against them too in those games. I don’t think it’s an issue with the bounce of the ball. Really, I think it’s the bench. Why not have Finn Smith instead of a Ford? Ben Curry to replace Underhill? Make Underhill go full steam for 50 minutes? So many questions on selection and rotation in the squad.
Great video as usual, and always gives me something to think on. This time its actually around the lineout where Earls gets smashed, and I'd appreciate someone with better knowledge helping out....as a back, I was always told we had to be 10m from the lineout until it ends. In this case, the end of the lineout is when the ball goes over the 15m line, so how can Siya Kolisi be that close? I see it happen a lot of the time off the "Overthrow Move" so it must be legal but how? Thanks in advance
As an Englishman who has HATED England Rugby for 10 years; I have to admit, England are playing WONDERFUL Rugby this Autumn; and I think they have just been a little unlucky here and there, and should not be ashamed at all of losing the games they have
I agree Ford was good off the bench against Australia, though his introduction and moving Marcus to 15 cost us on their last try, but there is no way you can argue he was good against NZ. Beyond the missed tackle and kicks (yes I know he hit the post on one, but Smith was kicking superbly in that game), he had a poor clearance kick off a scrum that didn't make enough territory. Also, NZ targeted him immediately, and a lot of the gainline and quick ball they made came by targeting him. I would imagine that's why he was moved out of the line in the lead up to the Telea try. Also, if Borthwick is the right man for the job, and personally I not sold one way or the other yet, not having the courage of his conviction, and essentially being bullied by the media is a huge problem.
In the build up to the Williams try Earl gives himself a stinger flying up to hit Snyman. Which may be why he then goes to the blind side rather than that “B” channel
I really like George Ford but if he's on the bench he can only ever come on at 10 so something else has to adjust, you need another, more versatile option.
"...RG Snyman, who is approximately the size of Cornwall..." I genuinely laughed out loud 😂
How on earth do youse analyse the games to this level of detail and then record and edit a video so quickly? Really astonishing

Excellent
It's laughable to blame Marcus Smith for England finishing poorly.
I just realised "Square-space should now be considered the Cheslin Kolbe of website builders"
Lol, " the tiny king of the world", lol class
Argh, I was hoping for the bleus vs blacks. Maybe the next one master squidge 🙏 ?
Siya stepping on Ox 🦶🏽... How did you see that 😂🎉
I really like George Ford but if he's on the bench he can only ever come on at 10 so something else has to adjust, you need another, more versatile option.
England were one Felix away from an unbeaten Autumn
