      ***** Kenji Yamamoto is credited as "Supervisor" because he was the supervisor for his Nintendo team of composers at Nintendo SPD. I don't think he was "supervising" David Wise. From what I understand from David Wise's interview, the two worked together, but Yamamoto had his own composition team working with him as well. But… it does seem like David Wise really did most of the work.
      I don't think Yamamoto was "telling Wise what to do." That wouldn't make much sense. Yamamoto can't really "boss" David Wise around, considering Wise wrote most of the the original music Yamamoto and his team kept reusing for DKC Returns. If there's anybody who's "bossing" Wise around, it's either the Audio Supervisor (maybe) Scott Peterson, or the Director/Producer of the game.

    But what Mr. Wise did here was clever. Instead of focusing on the fire itself, the music catches the feeling of grief and sadness, seeing what was once such a lively atmosphere now burnt to shambles.

      That's the great thing about this soundtrack. Worlds 1 and 2 have largely upbeat and catchy music, things get a little mixed between atmospheric and upbeat in Worlds 3 and 4, and then World 6 just hits you over the head with an entire plethora of amazing emotional pieces that sound almost lonely, but have a trace of hope strewn throughout them. It's probably one of the most terrifically balanced soundtracks I've ever heard.

      Most people judged this soundtrack when they saw the Dixie Kong trailer and heard the music from that one trailer. Problem is… that trailer had music FROM THE FIRST LEVEL OF THE GAME. As it happens, that first level also happens to take place on a nice colorful, tropical beach. So… it's going to have nice colorful, tropical music!

      Storytelling is not easy to begin with. Nowadays we can see good screenwriters deliver mediocre or hard-to-understand stories with tons of lines. But tell a story without a single line is something very, VERY few people can do. And the game designers of Tropical Freeze were able to do it wonderfully, alongside David Wise and the sound designers. This, mates, is a true masterpiece.

    An arena surrounded by plains, dry and thick with smoke and flames. A lone, large tree looming in the centre, its burnt branches and foliage serving as temporary refuge until the weight of the players causes them to crumble into ash. Fire breaking out on the ground, with scant sacks of water your only hope of extinguishing them.

      I honestly think nearly any stage from this game could make a good backdrop, but I stand by this one. Or maybe Alpine Incline, because you could do so much with the balloons. Fruit Factory (or the Jungle world in general) could provide a ton of ideas because of all the blades, trampolines, pulleys and mechanical hands. You could use Wing Ding as a motif and have a larger stage with a couple of areas connected by zip lines. Homecoming Hijinks would be fantastic, too - ice stages instantly present some neat challenges - and you could do some really cool things with having a snowstorm descend on the level and turning it into a silhouette level a la Cliffside Slide.

    This song really exemplifies the turning point of the game; as you enter the latter half, the music becomes more emotional, and the levels become harder.
    Interestingly enough, it seems as though the music of the first half of the game is a bit more underrated than that latter half, which is kinda like how DKC3 compares to DKC1 and DKC2.

      Not every level does. Some disappointingly don't, including the last level before the final boss.
      DKCR also had 10 more stages, so while overall less stages had their own music, there were also more stages to put music in, so it's not as bad as one may first think. DKCR also had more niche tracks that played in small sections (i.e. not the most prominent tracks in any given level).

      What I love about Tropical Freeze is that every world almost tells it's own story. Best example is the third world, where everyone is happy at savanna, but then stormy winds start to blow and finally this: no one is happy and the savanna is burning.

    This song is so beautifully catchy that it should be illegalised. The "chorus" has stuck with me for well over a week since I last heard it, and the general beat perfectly epitomizes your surroundings and the "fire" aspect to the level, far better than most lava levels I've seen. The best part about this song? It's meant to represent a bleak, desolated savanna, ruined beyond natural repair and nigh-on uninhabitable for all but the most masochistic of creatures, and it fulfills that role immaculately. Yet it's still composed in such a way that once you hear it, you simply can't get it out of your head.
    ... David Wise is a fucking genius. I wasn't TOO hot on the DKC soundtracks before, but this theme managed to convert me in one fell swoop.

    When I first heard this song, it was a friend of mine playing the level. As he was playing I was watching, and listening...at 0:08 the music caught my attention like oh, this is a really good melody. By 0:41 I was way more into the music than watching my friend play. As the music progressed my eyes grew wider...I made a comment that this was some of the best video game music I'd ever heard (I've been gaming for over 20 years).
    My friend must have been too busy trying not to get burned...his reply to me was something along the lines of "is it?"...as if he hadn't even noticed the beautiful sound. Poor guy must have been delirious from all the excess heat.

      Super Mario 3D World has 75% happy music, no one bats an eye.
      Tropical Freeze has ~20% happy music, everyone loses their minds (and the OST is clown music).

    • @mario54671
      @mario54671 10 лет назад +24

      In that defense, Super Mario 3D World is… you know, a Mario game. Mario games are known for those kinds of soundtracks.
      That particular one was praised because it was a HUGE step up from the New Super Mario Bros. 2 and U games… which had incredibly bland soundtracks, and many of the tunes were just reused from prior entries! 3D World re-used a couple tunes, and it remastered a few others, but the majority consisted of new, original tunes created by Nintendo's top composers (even Koji Kondo got involved a bit) with live big band music. With Mario, this kind of music is expected. Mario's all about colorful environments and happy-go-lucky, rhythmic music to go along with all the jumping, which is really the main mechanic.

    • @ArchenOpteryx
      @ArchenOpteryx 10 лет назад +11

      ***** Ah, not knocking on 3D World or anything; I actually really like that game and its soundtrack. I guess when you remove it from Shoehorned-Into-A-Meme context, what I was trying to accomplish with that post were 2 things:
      1) Why is it suddenly called "clown music" and not just "happy videogame music"? 3D World generally had clownier music than TF, and it was called happy video game music, but when TF has a little bit of the same thing, it's suddenly universally called clown music. . . . I guess I'm just letting the wording bug me on that one.
      2) But more importantly, only a little bit of the music was actually like that, and people are acting like happy music was 90% of the soundtrack. Come on,[ haters,] the "clown music" is almost completely gone from the soundtrack by world 3 (or even a lot of world 2). The game still has plenty of classic David Wise goodness to it.

    • @Koops520
      @Koops520 10 лет назад +14

      I agree with both of you, but my problem is that people usually think that "happy music" means "bad music". Also, in my opinion, Donkey Kong always get wonderful soundtracks, while Mario soundtracks are often so-so, probably because of the overload of games. I love both series and kinds of music.

    • @mario54671
      @mario54671 10 лет назад +6

      Koops520 Well, which Mario soundtracks are you referring to? If you're talking about games such as Mario Kart (prior to the Wii U game), Mario Party, Mario Strikers, or any spinoff, or the New Super Mario Bros. games… yeah the music is just okay (though, NSMB on DS had decent music). But the *core* Mario franchise had some great music, especially when Koji Kondo was the lead and sole composer of the games up until Super Mario Sunshine (He wrote roughly half the Sunshine music, and most of it is the thematic material most remember).
      I mean, I wouldn't call Super Mario 64's soundtrack "so-so," as it has a wonderful water theme, an incredibly catchy, yet atmospheric underground theme remix, the intense and powerful Koopa's Road theme…none of these I would consider "happy."
      That brings me to another point, I *HATE* when people generalize music of a brighter mood as simply "happy." That's the worst description in the world when it comes to music. Surely there are other adjectives you could use to describe it. It isn't black and white, it isn't just happy, or sad/angry. There are *MANY* different emotions when it comes to music.

    This goofy videogame about monkeys trying to save their bananas from an evil walrus happens to be, in my opinion, one of the greatest videogames of its genre ever made. Every single level has a completely distinct theme with its own music, background, assets, and mechanics. It breaks away from the tried and true 2d platformer level design process and expands upon it. A new kind of platformer that they miraculously got pretty much perfectly on the first try. The game is a blast to play, absolutely beautiful in the graphics department, and has the single best soundtrack I have ever heard from any videogame. You really wouldnt expect this music from a cartoony nintendo game to carry such powerful emotion. The facf that it didnt win best score in the 2014 game awards is a crime.

    What I love about this soundtrack is that it's nostalgic in a different way than DKCR was. DKCR directly remixed old DKC songs, which was great. Remixing was done to a lesser extent in DKCTF, too. However, the "brand new" songs in DKCTF still carry a lot of the same sentiments as the old songs. This song is a perfect example to me, because it definitely feels like a more intense version of Hot Top Bop from DKC2, yet it's a totally different song. Liek if u cry everr tim

    The whole soundtrack was much better than the remixes of the original Donkey Kong Country in Returns... despite Lockjaw's Saga Returns and Aquatic Ambiance Returns again... but this theme... MY GOD!!! This is a milestone of video game music composition! Sure we praise games like The Last of Us bringing emotions thanks to the soundtrack (and it was Hollywood-level soundtrack but that's the problem, it's gaming not Hollywood)... but the AMBIANCE!!! It sticks in the head, we remember the level throwing waterberries at fiery enemies and burning bushes...
    Except Windmill Hills, Forest Folly, Frozen Frenzy, Homecoming Hijinx and Alpine Incline (Ground), Scorch' N Torch is the best music from the soundtrack. This is David Wise at his best! This is the Fear Factory of DKC1, the Stickerbush Symphony of DKC2, the Cascade Capers of DKC3 (despite it was Eveline Fischer doing the SNES soundtrack but Wise on the GBA)... the very best ambiant music from the game.

    After Donkey Kong celebrated the birth of Simba in Grassland Groove he came to a surprise that after two days the Groove of the Grasslands from the Bright Savannah turned into a burning, ash-filling, dancing-tree-killing battlefield.
    After reaching the end of the Grasslands, Donkey Kong looked back at the now burned and slowly dying trees, knowing that even though they had a great time in Grassland Groove, nature-disasters won't stop for that and will kill everything in its path.

It shows how good the theme mixing in the game is (Safari/fire is a pretty cool mix up), the music adds on to the level so much, and the visuals in this level are incredible.
