This is the constriction caused by the struggle of conceptualization. It is like cramming one's self concept into a clown car in one's own mind. Even the old man says that original mind cannot be bridged through the thoughts of others. Of course that is so when even our own thinking can be like an obstruction when we see ourselves as a divided entity within. Parity is found in stillness and teachings are more effective when we stop analyzing and vivisecting them with expectation and fantasizing about imagined prerequisites for original mind. Once an individual awakens he realizes that humanity is the water that helped him become a fish. He is not the water but without the water he is nothing.
I know it's just a way to jolt the audience out of their comfort zones so they will listen, but it's pretty amusing how he insults his audience in about every paragraph. Charming in a way. We all know it's frustrating to try and get people to openly listen, especially when relating difficult or unusual concepts.
He is about as grumpy with his fellow monks as my father-in-law was with me. Not wearing robes I feel that I safely avoid many of the arrows flying at his audience, so I am quite receptive to his message, while all those monks are squirming on their meditation cushions and waiting to escape from the withering storm of his excoriation.
