      There’s also good fairs in Chicago and LA if that’s any easier. But there’s no better place to see a TON of art.

    We attend Art Basel HK every year. It’s an incredible event. Hong Kong people love art and come in droves. I believe most of the buyers though are mainland Chinese. Seems to me that buying blue chip art at Basel is a good way to convert CNY to an easy to flip asset and resell for Euro or USD.

      Jealous you’ve been to ABHK! And I’m sure what you say has/is happening. But there are also huge transportation/storage/insurance costs associated with art. That just seems, particularly today, pretty damn risky and not worth it.

    Julie Mehretu? Maybe not made in in 1979, she was only 9 years old then.

      Well you’re exactly right - it’s from 1999. I’ll update the show notes. Thanks!

      I know there have been a lot, but those were just the first confirmed sales at the time I recorded this.

    Money laundering. The answer is money laundering.

    • @christopherwestpresents
      @christopherwestpresents  4 месяца назад +1

      Tax evasion certainly. Money laundering is a pretty difficult thing to do in the art market.
