This video features Ryka playing a eucalyptus didgeridoo for a crowd at a big Aussie BBQ in Los Angeles. Ryka is an exceptional player, and I wish we'd had a better sound system to capture that. That said, his playing and riddims are awesome. He's wearing full traditional gear including body paint, lap lap (sarong), and a kangaroo skin wrap.
To someone who has never tried to play a didgeridoo you have no idea how hard this is
And to someone who has tried playing didgeridoo. Congratulation, you can learn cornett.
it's a sense of rythym combined with muscle memory through constant practice. you basically need to train your muscles to control the diaphram and be able to use the muscles in the mout. tongue, cheeks etc.
@JewTube - Censor Yourself. Or we'll do it for you. It takes practice yes. I learned because of the breathing techniques taught to us in the Marines when running or swimming. In the nose; out the mouth. Then learn to do it in rapid succession using the abs and keeping the cheeks slightly inflated; but not too much or it'll be hard to use the tongue and mouth to create certain notes
@@Recon-cv1fe Had mine for 20 years, still cant do it. This instrument stirs something form deep within when i here it.

Didgeridoo: one of the most underrated instruments in the world
For me my favorite instrument to listen to. It's absolutely majestic
In the opinion, the greatest, the most guttural, the most 'human' instrument in the world. Absolute goosebumps everytime I hear it.
Yet it’s the best
It's the worst omggg
LIKE WTF
This fella made me want to try an instrument , and now I’ve learnt to play the didgeridoo! We all talk about Egyptians and American Indians , and all these other civilisations , and then I learnt Aboriginal Australians are the oldest civilisations left on earth and I have learnt all that , just from clicking on this link! God bless you Brother and the first Australians !! And that’s coming from someone whiter than a bottle of white . Out ❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍
Man! Just wondering how long did it take to learn lol
Beautiful comment 😵
we all talk about what? you must be from a very small place
Holy cow.... I've NEVER gotten goosebumps like this... When the tempo changed.... My entire body got goosebumps.... This is FAR BEYOND amazing.
Sound healing!
To hear live - even better!! Amazing - primal....
Souds kinky. Lol.
It changed your body's electromagnetic field. If you completely let go you will feel it even more.
I’ve been listening to this since I was 14. I’m now 31.. a skilled didgeridoo player because of this man. Wonder where he is at in 2024? Post a video RYKA 👏🏽
Same , from one didgeridoo player to another, I hope Ryka continues to inspire others

I used to live in remote Far North QLD, between the Daintree and Cooktown, beneath Mt Finlay, close to Cedar Bay. Sometimes, at night, we'd hear the sounds of a didgeridoo being played. It wasn't anybody on our property, nor on the next one down the road. Never figured out who was playing, but it was haunting and beautiful.
do you know auravale?
@lavender fields hey man - New south wales man here , when I was 8 I was in the bush and heard indigenous singing and sticks no dig..right next to me , but when I climbed a big granite boulder and looked around and called out - no one there....we don't always know whats in the bush with us eh?

This the best didge performance on youtube. Ive watched at least 30 times. Unbelievable.
This is the best didgeridoo playing on RUclips.
Nothing above Shibaten. Nobody is better.
I second that!
of course it is
There's so many styles to playing the yigi yigi. Ryka has the northern Queensland style shown here in 1995, ruclips.net/video/VaFl7tkVGZk/видео.html u might wanna check out mick ambrym to see where rykas style stems from

I lived in Australia years ago & lived in North Sydney.
I got myself a penpal up in Northern Queensland, a native
Australian or Riginies as they like to be known.
My friend, Jassy was the same age as i was, 12yrs old & we became ( & still are 54yrs later)
Great friends & in the 5 wk school holidays i was allowed to go & stay with Jassy & her family!
I loved it, & it began a life long love of Aborigional culture & mythology & history.
Her people were amazing, her relations & the Elders were so amazing & made me so welcome
I learned all about their Art & the meanings & how the Didgeridoo came about & how its played by a circular breathing technique.
It IS a very difficult instrument to learn & they start with breathing practices first, like the meditation techniques of specialised breathing taught in India & is extremely beneficial to health & long life.
I NEVER get tired of hearing this instrument played,
This guy is brilliant! You can hear him incorporate animal cries in his playing, its homage to creatures of the outback & they have tremendous mystical influence on whatever animal they want to hunt, by talking to it as they play their tribes calling on the Didgeridoo.
Takes a life time of practice!
This was incredible
Thank you

Sadly my classmates didn’t get to watch it and learn about the didgeridoo cause they were being very racist so I came on RUclips and watched it. It’s really good if I’d say so myself!
I can play the the didgeridoo and cicular breathe etc but the sounds this guy makes are just amazing . As someone that can play this instrument I really admire how well he plays . I think its just in his aborigional DNA that makes him so good .
It is years of practice as well. Experimenting with deferent sounds, etc..
he has most likely been playing it most days of most his life. that has something to do with it also id imagine
What an amazing sound from a very old aboriginal instrument that have been played Down Under for thousands of years. That guy playing it has mastered this beautiful ancient techno trance instrument.
I really appreciate the aboriginal culture and empathise with their plight. I hope the Aboriginal people can have a fruitful future in the country their land has turned into.

Is it just me or does this sound fresh as fuck?
Yvette Marie Ann ooookay, a) There are very real, disgusting things happening in this world you should be more irritated about than the language of a complete stranger you don't know on the Internet. B) welcome to the Internet, btw.
Yvette Marie Ann You're one of the most vacuous people I've ever seen... unless of course that was all in jest, in which case I applaud you.
Yvette Marie Ann ok honestly, you have to be joking. Firstly, seeing someone saying 'is it just me or does this sound fresh as fuck' does not equal verbal abuse towards you or anyone else. Secondly, don't go acting all high and mighty, saying things like 'Who the fuck do you think your (btw you can't even use the right word. In this context, you are supposed to type you're) talking to??? Now I suggest you get on your hands and knees and apologise to me...' because it is not doing shit for you and it is just making you look stupid. Thirdly, you are starting all this crap over other people swearing yet you yourself swear at them? If you do not know what I am talking about, you said "Who the fuck do you think your talking to???" and you also said "...unlike the other gutless black cunts who don't give a shit about their race..." Please, practice what you preach. Last but not least, I have no idea what you are on about when you say that you 'at least have the guts to stand up to those who disrespect my race Indigenous Australia unlike the other gutless black cunts who don't give a shit about their race... they should be ashamed to call themselves Indigenous Australians... there should be more proud Aboriginal people like me...' This is just too much now. I do not see anyone that has disrespected Indigenous Australians, all I see is some idiot posting absolutely rubbish comments under the name Yvette Marie Ann. Oh yeah and just so you know, I am also an Indigenous Australian and I am not ever going to be ashamed to call myself an Indigenous Australian.
Yvette Marie Ann 1. I am Aboriginal, I come from the bundjalung people. 2. I do not know where you got the United States from, I have never even been there. 3. I am most definitely not a member of the RUclips Team (and also, what reason do you honestly think that someone from RUclips would try to intimidate you?) 4. I am going to be honest, I never learnt the Aboriginal language. Although, given the fact that there are many different words for the same things depending on where you are from and the fact that I do not know where you are from, I can't even say that I would be able to translate those words into english even if I had learnt the language. And plus, the ability to speak the Aboriginal language does not decide who is Aboriginal or not, it is decided by who gives birth to you. Who my parents are and where they are from show that I am Aboriginal (and part Maori) so if you think that the fact that I have not learnt the Aboriginal language gives you the right to tell me that I am not Aboriginal, then you are not the "very smart and intelligent lady" that you claim to be. You should just save your time and not respond because sitting behind your screen claiming that I am not Aboriginal without even knowing me is not a very good reply.
lol Yvette Marie Ann deleted all her comments
Early sounds of mankind. Looks like everyone can relate to it.
Exactly. Science and biologists recently confirmed that the Australian aborigines are the oldest living civilization. And if you look closely at them; they are all different looking. Some have different textured hair; eye color, hair color, facial features ect. A very big majority of people are probably descendants of them. Which is why so many can relate to this music. It's as though it awakens deep tribal feelings
@@Gandhi_Physique It's more the tones and vibrations that come from it. Just like listening to the Gyuto monks from Tibet. The vibrations they are able to create with their voices almost sends an electrical current through you. It's all positive vibrations. The dinge does the same thing

it doesnt matter that much at the beginning, get a shorter one they are easier to play on.
get one, have fun playing :)
As a white guy (like me) did you get one with a smaller mouthpiece? I ask because I got one a while back and just couldn't get the circular breathing thing then watched a Rolf vid where he explains how as they're traditionally played by aborigines with naturally bigger lips, as a white guy you could benefit from a smaller end.?

@G W too deadly brotha! He's one of my older cousins and i worked there too for six years but that was after Micky had left. The following didge players were Dixon Nona (dec) and Damien Schreiber ( 2 awesome yigi yigi players)
I won't argue, Ryka is also a deadly player! It's true though Micky is on a whole nother level of his own!
@@radaroperator8660 I know this is a random question but is he aboriginal ?
this is one of those things put on this earth to teach us about energy in the form of sound
energy, frequency, vibration
it's easy for your brain to understand, and that's why it puts you into a sort of trance
it is a device you can use to clear your mind, if you're not good at meditating (like me)
it's a different place, yet you are always there. hard to explain
but to play the instrument is a totally different experience from hearing it. the rhythm of the circular breathing will put you into a really deep trance, you kinda get high temporarily
the only reason I know as much as I do about frequency and vibration is this instrument
I just feel like it ain't a coincidence that the didgeridoo can be made with little to no effort (of course there is an art to it, like everything else). The universe wants us to figure it out
because that's what we are, is the universe. hence why we have a natural curiosity and want to find out how everything works.
I guess if you wanna call that god, then everyone, and everything is god. I just feel like the term "god" is too generic, and implies some sort of theology
I ain't atheist, I ain't a theist. I don't quite have a definitive answer as to where we came from or why we are here, it's all just speculation. Anybody who claims they know is full of shit, I guarantee it
ok seneca
dude it’s just music

I cannot tell a lie, I was bobbing my head to this.
I'm amazed how he does that without passing out. I'm no expert on didgeridoo playing so I'm probably missing something here
Circular breathing. It's difficult for some
Most digeridoo players have excess breath depending on circular breathing pattern, the biggest problem is hyperventilating. Ryka has been playing since a toddler. He uses Arnhem land traditional rhythms from his country on the Gulf of Carpentaria, Northern Australia. he uses a traditional Yidaki which is similar to a digeridoo but made of a eucalyptus from that land.
I play this song in my phone in steel pipes at work and imagine they are giant didgeridoos
I love Australia for this.. And your nature and ancestrally
The best way to think of what this guy is doing, is that he is telling a story. Every sound has a meaning and when strung together, one can picture the unfolding story.
That's beautiful
Ive probably listened to this video more than any other. The solid groove he sets just a few minutes in really shows how instrumental the didgeridoo can really be. Thank you for sharing this vid. I wish you the best of fortune!

I am am music major in USA - been playing for over 30 years. This still inspires me so deeply. This guy and many others I see online do so MANY wonderful things time wise, rhythm wise, sound texture wise, that it's hard to even describe. I was inspired to take up the digeridoo watching these things years ago. It is very difficult and very advanced techniques these people use. I play big band jazz, and classical. What these artists do with the digeridoo is absolutely as hard as anything we do. And it's so connected to nature!!!
You're not supposed to touch a digeridoo unless you're aboriginal and a man just invade you didn't know and you're not, they consider it theft of culture
@@kiteh9024 You can't touch a musical instrument unless you are of a certain race? I've never heard this and doesn't that sound quite racist?. I play saxophone which was invented by Germans. it's not stealing their culture to play saxophone. What i 'have' read about is Aboriginal culture not allowing women to play one in ceremony. Does that make it right to discriminate based on sex because it's a cultural tradition? No. Could you point me to Aboriginal statements or sources staging it's wrong to touch a dig if you are not Aboriginal? I really haven't heard about this before. I agree. So many layers going on there
We use recordings like this to put our toddlers to sleep, they have no resistance to the music produced by didgeridoo players and respond much better to those played by native players than the ones played by people not raised native. The kids know the difference, which considering none of us are Australian, nor have we ever been there and we live in the USA, is remarkable.
This most ancient of human instruments is played by pulling air in thru the nose and out thru the mouth- rotational breathing. It doesn't require the lungs' power, and is actually hindered by that. A didg is nothing but a hollow tube...the rest is all human power and skill.
