How U.S. College Administrators Are "Dreaming Up Ways to Squash Gaza Protests"

As the fall term gets underway for students across the United States, we speak with journalist and academic Natasha Lennard about how college administrators are attempting to quash Gaza solidarity actions following mass protests at campuses across the country in the spring. One example is New York University, which recently updated its student policy to make criticisms of Zionism potentially punishable under its anti-discrimination rules. "It's extremely dangerous," says Lennard, who teaches at The New School. "It performs de facto apologia for Israel, and to have that put into writing by a university so clearly is just open for further abuses."

I'm Canadian, and Western University (in southwestern Ontario) has just issued this lovely new policy (text is copy-pasted from CBC article):
------
'Groups now have to get authorization from Western's director of campus safety and emergency services (CSES) at least five business days before a planned demonstration, the new policy, which went into effect Aug. 29, states.
If approved, the director will provide "reasonable directions, including time, location and manner for the demonstration," the policy said. Protests can only happen from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday and individuals can't advertise protests until they're approved.'
------
The kicker is that when Western had its encampment, which was extremely well-organized and Alhamdulillah didn't get taken down violently, the organizers had actually secured a meeting with the administration...albeit the DEI office, not the university president; the meeting got kiboshed specifically because Western refused to let Michael Lynk, a Western professor and THE FORMER UN SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON PALESTINE, sit in on the meeting as an advisor/witness for the organizers. Why are institutions of higher learning so he'll bent on investing in war? Why aren't they investing in their local communities instead?
They benefit from disparity. My university is a PWI, mostly white and Asian students I believe. But the neighborhood surrounding the area is mostly poor black and various Spanish speaking communities. It's wild seeing black kids going to an underfunded school while across the street is this fancy university with barely any black kids there. They benefit from surrounding communities being underfunded, and they benefit from communities from outside of the neighborhood coming to their university (because they are more likely to have money to give to the school).
On top of this, most of the things they claim to invest in within the schools are useless to most students. My school is literally building a stadium, but I will never be able to go because I'm a low income student that has to work a lot and cannot go to a football game. Meanwhile students on campus have to beg the institution to invest in and find resources for free or reduced price textbooks. Imo that should already be a part of the university, a committee or group dedicated to increasing access to educational resources to more students, as well as food and financial resources (because college students notoriously don't have access to a lot of good food and many deal with not eating enough). But instead they have commitments to building sports establishments and more Starbucks on campus, stuff that only benefits some students, students who probably would also benefit more from having access to better food as well.
Like most colleges should have a community garden on campus or in the neighborhood, where students and the locals can access free, fresh food and local farmers market items at a reduced price. But instead I just see Starbucks and Chick fil a and no markets on campus at all. Being on a college campus can feel very isolating for low-income, non white kids, especially if you don't have access to a car and you have to go to school in your work clothes. Things can be done about these issues and many people have solutions, but universities do not want to invest in solutions that don't earn them money (even though it probably will earn them money).
Why doesn't the country invest in local communities instead of bombs and terrorism (our two main exports)?
Good; freedom of speech is not freedom to perform acts of violence.
Ah.... all the Universities are committing suicide.

My school literally yesterday on campus squashed a protest and claimed that it's because it's the same group that did encampments a few months ago. They claimed if any other student group did the protest then they wouldn't stop them, which is pure bs. The staff thay stopped it were really proud too, while they told the students that they have no freedom of speech. It's gross and I didn't even know what to do, it was my first time physically on campus seeing it happen. I can say those students are extremely brave because it's probably scary to think of getting suspended or expelled after probably working really hard in school for years, but they protest despite the threats to their future paths. I even felt threatened and I wasn't literally participating in the protest at the time, I just happened to see it get stopped.

Look, so many of us see the ideological capture of the universities today by the political Left. I personally experienced it in the 1990's. Professors used to keep their personal ideologies/political leanings out of the discussion and just focused on factual materials. Not that discussion shouldn't be robust. But no professor should use their lectern as a pulpit to preach their own perspective, and I personally saw that over and over in my experience back then -- it's far worse now.

New Rules of War for the West: A Dangerous Precedent
The protesters claim that Palestinians are the oppressed,
with Israel as the oppressor.
They argue that the violence and terror,
such as the actions of October 7,
are justified as part of their resistance.
However, they overlook the fact
that Israel's efforts are focused
on avoiding harm to civilians
while targeting a terror organization.
This narrative of "oppression"
has been similarly used in the West
by groups claiming historical injustices-
whether Indigenous, Black, or others.
These protesters are now pushing
to rewrite the rules of war for the entire West,
justifying massacres, kidnappings-
including babies, the elderly-
and brutal abuse of women, men, and children.
Are they setting the stage for future violence,
potentially turning it against whites themselves?
