This video was immensely helpful in helping me replace a rear camera on my Honda Accord 2017. Saved me a trip to the mechanic. Thank you for taking the time to post!!!!
Replaced back up cam on 2015 Accord yesterday. Removing chrome strip slightly different. The two very small clips go in round holes and can actually be seen with the trunk carpet cover removed. Had I known what I was looking for wouldn't have needed trim tool. Might have broken one half of one the tiny clips. No biggie as really two 10mm bolts hold he strip firm. A good idea to use a magnetic 10 mm nut driver to make sure bolt not lost with removal and re install. Thanks for your efforts, very helpful.
This! I didn't have a trim tool but I saw that the clips could be accessed from the inside of the trunk. I used a pair of pliers to pinch and push them out and voila! The trim came out without having to use a trim tool. Also, just a tip that you might not have to take the whole trim completely off. I was able to just take off one side and I had plenty of room to work with.
I was thinking of the same thing when I've seen how much rooms it has in the trunk where you should be able to access it to release the chrome trim. Thanks.
This video was very helpful! If I may add, I was still having the hardest time removing the clips at both ends of the chrome trim (even with a pry tool, not as wide as the one being used in this video). In fear of breaking the chrome trim, the clips or the tail light from prying, I saw the tail light just had 4 8mm nuts so I removed them. Loosening the tail lights let me get better access to the clips so that I didn’t break anything. I did not unplug them or fully remove, just took the nuts off so I could pop them out slightly. Took 1 minute to remove the nuts over the 10 min already spent trying to loosen the end clips on the chrome trim. Hope this helps!
It helps to use a second pry tool. The kit I got has a curved tool, a small version of the big tool shown in the video, and a straight tool with beveled ends. I started taking off the trim with the curved tool, then in the gap made by the curved tool I pushed in the straight tool. That held in the gap, and I could push the straight tool in a little bit to make the gap wider. Then I could maneuver the curved tool towards the end of the trim. Eventually, I could lever out the trim.
I used 2 pry tools as well. It would’ve helped had the video mentioned the other clips though. He clearly already freed them before recording or just decided to leave it out. It’s hard not to break them when you know exactly where they are & almost impossible when you don’t. Fortunately I ordered a box of various automotive clips prior to starting because I broke one on the trim and 2 on the mat, not to mention the end off of a pry tool😑
5/3/22. I followed your instructions for removing the trunk carpet and chrome on my 2017 Accord LX, to access the BU camera. Everything worked fairly well for a DIY'er with general mechanical background. I wasn't too successful getting the clips back on to fasten the carpet, but it's back OK. As to the Chrome strip, I lost one of the 10mm bolts in the trunk lid: it'll rattle for years, such is life. Honda didn't carry them, but I bought two (same threads, about the same length) at the hardware store for $1 (had 1 for a spare). Advise using silicone or chewing gum on your socket-to-bolt, both for removing and replacing the two 10mm bolts. I bought a pry-tool set for about $8. That was worthwhile, helped getting the chrome strip off and back in just fine. Thanks.
hey man how did you re insert the carpets clips? They’re too wide to insert it normally but it gets thin if I pull it but i can’t push it into is slot while pulling it. maybe I’m tripping but I’ll take any help.
@@meechtree5795 I had difficulty w the clips. Some broke. The others had to be separated into two parts. 1 part should snap into the metal hole. Then the 2nd part goes thru the carpet hole then into the 1st part. Marginal results doing that. For the Holes I could not snap, I bought large sheet metal screws, 5/8 inch dia about 3/4” long, with washers, put them thru the carpet hole and forced-screwed them into the trunk lid metal hole. Thank you so much for posting this. I came here because I was replacing my rear camera. I have a 2014 Accord and it took me some work to remove the chrome. I think I was being too gentle and panicked when I saw it flex. Haha! But this video was spot on!! Thank you so much as you saved me a lot of money.
I am looking for the 2 white plastic clips and the 2 black threaded inserts for the 10mm bolts. I believe they’re discontinued. Can you tell me where to find something that works?
Love love love your videos my friend. Can you make one on how to remove the rear lower chrome strip also? And door handles/side window trim would be great if you have time. I am liking to wrap these on my white accord sport thanks a lot
I have a 2015 Honda Accord EXL and removal was a little different. Once the carpeting is off, you only needed to use a wrench to squeeze the plastic clips to remove the chrome. No bolt removal needed.
Great video man, that's my exact car color and all. Now I just need to find videos on the lower garnish, and the front garnish removals so I can remove them all and get them all painted black.
Was this the first time you remove the trim on this video to share with us? After watching your video yesterday, I went remove my trim today but notice that there are two additional clips/taps directly opposite each side rear camera as you can here at 2:41 and 2.58 where the small holes are. I suppose you neglect to mention that in the video but I just like to let other know about these two additional clips. Well, as a result, II broke one of the smaller clip but it still go back and held in pretty good by the two 10 mm screws. Thanks
@Jonathan Heissler I have not been able to find the exact part. My Honda dealer says they are not available for purchase and we tried several clips from the diagram. I ultimately bought a big box of general trim clips from Amazon and retrofitted two of them to suit my need. It’s a crap job, but the 10mm screws are really what’s holding that trim in place.
Thank you for the video. Just a bit different for the 9th gen compare to the model in the video (9.5 gen, basically 2016 and newer). For 9th gen you don't really need any prying tool. There are two clips visible on the inside of the trunk as well. Once I removed the two bolts, I just squeeze the side of the clip to make sure the side retract and can go back through the whole and force the clip (which is holding the chrome strip in place) out. Once the two clips are forced out, the entire chrome strip falls off without much force.
Im trying to do the same my 15 accord sport, but the left bolt won't come out. I've used the same tool you're using in the vid, and nothing. The bolt wiggles now but just won't come out. Anyway to get it out??
Thanks for the great video instruction. I was able to replace my backup camera in about 30 minutes on my 2014 Honda Accord EXL V6. I would have spent a lot of money or a lot more time without your guidance.
This was very helpful to Accord owners. I have a 2014 Acura RDX and have been searching for info on how to remove and replace rear view camera. Any chance you could demonstrate on a 2014 Acura RDX?
Are there any other clips or bolts to remove closer to the license plate/center of chrome trim? I can remove the trim near the tail lights but something seems to be holding them tight closer to the license plate. I don't want to force it and risk breaking something. EDIT: I think the plastic tabs Tous Shong pointed out is holding it. I think they need to be unclipped from the inside before pulling the chrome trim out. In the video, it doesn't look like the plastic tabs are attached to the trim.
that's the problem I have but trying to get to them to unclip seems impossible because of where some are located. it looks like a special tool like pliers is needed but metal in the trunk lid you can nit use a standard set of pliers.

So my year, 2016 for the Accord, there are no different tail lights other than the original ): I really like the 2013-15 tail light models made.. is there ANY way I can replace the tail lights? would I only need to swap the back chrome piece? and then just buy the (2013-15 model) tail lights and input them?? like do the holes/screws/bolts under the chrome piece match all honda accords to do that?
Does the replacement snap in? Would you install it from inside the trunk then push it in the hole till the clips catch? Just ordered the replacement and taking apart looks easy. Just want to make sure I dont screw it up
WARNING! If your trim does not yield to moderate prying, you have a different retention method like my 2014 Honda Accord EX-L. There is no prying needed. If you follow this procedure you WILL BREAK your trim on a trunk similar to mine. After removing the two 10 mm screws, look for two white nylon clips coming though the trunk lid behind the trim., Compress these and the trim just pops off. Again, pry and you will break your plastic trim panel. I do not understand other comments here that make is seem like this works.,
There are a total of 8 clips. I wonder where the other 6 are because I watched these videos of removing this trim piece and no one came across those clips. I wonder if they were taken off at some point and never reinstalled.
on my 2017 Honda Accord EX sedan. there are additional nylon retainer clips that are secured by prongs on each side to the inside of the trunk. the chrome will not pop out and I'm afraid applying too much force might bend the chrome. these clips are hard to get at because of the trunk lid design which makes them almost impossible to get to with NY sort of toll to squeeze in those prongs.
from the outside of the 2016 accord and 2014 accord, it's just the chrome piece that's different which is why I ask if that's the only thing I'd need to change in order to go from the 2016 tail light (only original tail lights design available) to any 2013-15 tail light bcs there are many bad ass styles.. Not sure if under (interior) of chrome piece is different...
Wow it was that easy? When my clip broke I had to take out that rear chrome thing along with the 2 inner tail lights, I had no idea how to take those inner lights off. I just used some thick double sided tape to mount it back on, it's would have been an expensive fix for a camera it still works.
This video fails to mention the two white plastic clips that are either side of the camera et al. You need to squeeze those with needle nose pliers and push them outward (from inside the trunk) first, then pry out the two large clips on either end.
For my LX model, it is 74890-T2F-A11 and I believe it's called a garnish assembly. Also, if you go to Hondaautomotiveparts.com, you can type in your make, model and trim and then identify through parts pictures from there. I hope this helps.
