Start of 2020 and the Vatage V is still one very solid watch. Use Fenix series from day one, but after updates the Polar works damn solid, and if you check price this days i would say you don´t get so much better for what you pay.
I was disapointed by the gps accuracy of the Vantage V, I sold it and returned back to my V800, which is the most accurate watch in terms of gps performance (friends of mine do have the fenix 5x plus, comparing with them, V800 is still more accurate in terms of distance when running in a stadium or in terms of altitude). So weird!
I purchased Vantage M and AW4, I don’t do run often but I have been wearing both of them on my wrist for about a week. I can tell you that HR monitor on AW4 is far superior to M when I do strength work out. M lags about 15-40 seconds during strength work out which is about on par with Suunto Spartan Trainer i have. AW4 is usually right on the spot (I am comparing both of them to H10 chest HR). Just last night I did Semi Hit work out (10kettlebell swings, 10 Kettlebell push ups, and 10 Russian Twist for 10mins, as many round as you can). AW4 kept up with chest HR, Vantage M failed miserably never even came close. I wanted Vantage to be excellent like AW4 because I don’t like AW4 fitness software...etc so I am very disappointed. I may keep it and use chest strap but not sure...
Again, quite literally the very first run. I’ll have to play around with placement as well as tightness but it was fairly close after about that 6 min mark. No crazy spikes or drops which is a good sign.
I trhink oHR is very personal I own the Vantage V and tried the oHR for me was only 2 beats down. So it is very impressive. My problem is that also 2 beats difference for is too much so I use it with the H10
I think people will start to consider again choosing Polar rathen than having to decide between just Garmin and Suunto. We all know the goods and the bads from each, but Polar's new watch on paper seems pretty good, I like the design and how the data is displayed.
@@burtonBGi disagree 40hrs gps on time is very impressive . Couple that with the new training and recovery load features ,they have a package that's hard to beat . I’ve been with Polar since before Strava and smart phones. Back with the S720 model that loaded data to my old PC. Anyway I bought the M400 and used that since it came out. Then bought the M600 so I could have a smart watch with wrist HRM. So now my M600 no longer works with my iPhone X and latest iOS maybe because of the Google Wear iOS it requires. My M400 connects directly with the Polar Flow and still works fine. Anyway I’m on the edge of jumping ship off Polar but I still would love to get the Vantage but only if it doesn’t have issues and have to use Google Wear iOS to work with my iPhone.
Great video as always Des! I did not see complete review from you yet but wondering how battery life compares to Garmin Fenix 5? I am very happy with my Garmin that will last 10-14 days before charging. Is the Polar Vantage V close? I think Garmin has larger battery but cannot find spec.
I wanted to buy Garmin Forerunner 245 Music but I found it Polar Vantage V for the same price(280€ new). Is it a better choice for running than Garmin F 245 ?
DesFit, thanks for the video... I pre-ordered Vantage M and should get it next week. I am also curious as to how good this HR sensor is going to be. I hope it improve from what you experienced or I may also get AW4 since the HR is pretty darn good on AW4.
I’d still say that it isn’t bad. This was quite literally the first test but I did test it at the gym this evening and it seemed to work well. More testing! 😄
How do you find the screen compared to the fenix 5+ or Garmin 935? In all but full sun it appears dim and lacking contrast to me. I’m also not sure that white text on a black background was a wise decision on this type of screen.
happy running huh maybe on monday after i get rid of that flu! Anyway, i was waiting for that Polar device in your hands, hope this will help me to decide about Vantage :)
The main thing that stopped me from buying the Vantage V, is the lack of ANT+. I want to ride on Zwift with the tablet picking up the Bluetooth info from the power sensor and my wrist watch picking up the ANT+. Can't do that with the Vantage V. Went with the Garmin 945 instead. As much as I want to get the Vantage V, the 945 just has way more functions and compatible with everything out there. Somebody send Polar that memo again. I really want a Polar watch, but for now, the lack of ANT+ is a major sticking point for me. Along with not being able to change the data screens on the watch without the phone handy and any map function polar has doesn't come close to Garmin's.
Ya I was a bit surprised as well but I’ll be playing around with placement as well as tightness. Overall though, it did catch back up and followed trends fairly well, although not perfect. But again, I was expecting not so great GPS but was pleasantly surprised. I guess this means more testing!
Oh, and I wouldn’t necessarily pay too much attention to averages as much as trends, for instance, a sensor could produce both higher and lower heart rates than actual which in turn could be the same average at the end of session, which has most definitely happened to me before.
That's really strange. I couldnt use my Vantage for running, yet. But the HR Sensor detects HR spikes really quickly. Everytime I went stairs up or when I did a few push ups, it almost directly measured the spikes. But i am wearing it really tight. Also when I compare my 24/ 7 HR with the 24/7 HR on the Polar App, I see a lot less spikes through the day. It seems to be a lot more constant
I'd agree. Des, I think you were a little too kind in your assessment of that HR comparison. :) More LEDs does not equal more better. Coming from researching LED replacement bulbs for car/trucks, LEDs can vary hugely in brightness for the same form factor and number of LED chips. So it could be that Polar and Wahoo are using lower brightness (and lower wattage) LEDs, but more of them, versus something like the Fenix with less, but brighter. Perhaps the larger light coverage area helps, or maybe it's for battery life, or maybe they are just as bright and brighter is better. Dunno. Not saying this is definitely the case, but it's a possibility.
Hi Des! First of all thanks for your work and in-depth reviews you provide :) Any plans on sharing your final testing results? Can’t decide between vantage M currently at ca. 200 EUR vs forerunner 245 at ca. 270 EUR - not sure if it makes sense to spend more on the garmin. Main purpose for me is to have some daily activity tracking, running, cycling and potentially swimming. What would be your thought on this? Thanks in advance!
Very nice review, very detailed, I have AW4 and for me it is very good HR. Only downside is not having real 24/7 HRM. Does Vantage have every second recording?
Howdy everyone! I'm planning on getting a new wearable; however, I don't know yet whether choosing between Garmin forerunner 935 or Polar Vantage V? What are your thoughts?
Can’t wait to see the Apple Watch explanation. Mine is always showing a longer distance then my Garmin while it smooths out the corners. Isn’t making much sense...
So, about those "more videos about the Vantage V". Where are they? There have been 3 major updates with the fourth being released this week and still no review? I'm particularly interested in how you find GPS. It's all over the place on my Vantage V. Easily the worst of any watch I ever used.
I decided against doing video after video of it since there was such a long timeline of firmware releases which could change outcomes considerably. With that, since it’s going to be slow for a bit during the winter months, I may revisit it.
DesFit Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! Fair enough, I'll keep my fingers crossed ;) EDIT: Update 5, and with that the last major one according to Polar, is out. Ultimate test coming up?
Good choice to go round by Polar. By 40 hours, you mean 40 hours of GPS, right? 30 hours GPS for the M would blow away the Vivoactive 3 and the like in the mid price category.
Hi Desfit, i can't find any other topic on the interwebs on this so i am wondering if i am the only one with this issue. But my indoor swim sessions are not being synced to strava? Have you heard this before?

Overall best looking smart fitness watch out there but the strap on this thing is pretty awkward to get on/off...
