Kiedyś oglądałem bardzo stary film w którym Żyd na ulicy w Krakowie zapytany przez kogoś kim jest odpowiedział, że Polakiem żydowskiego pochodzenia. Tak samo odpowiadał Ukrainiec i Litwin. Były wyjątki ale to był bardzo mały procent. Żydzi byli Polakami tak samo jak dziś Kaszubi czy Ślązacy. Piękne narody naszej kochanej Polski. Tę mentalność zabili najpierw Niemcy a później na Kresach poprawili Sowieci. Nagle Polska stała się monolityczna narodowo a Polacy do dziś boją się wpływów innych niż nasze. Przed wojną tylko mniejszość mieszkających w Polsce Żydów uważała się za Polaków żydowskiego pochodzenia. Znakomita większość uważała się wyłącznie za Żydów i kiepsko znała język polski. Wiem to od dr Ewy Kurek, która bardzo dobrze, można powiedzieć zawodowo (jest historykiem), zna te sprawy.

Po najazdach tatarskich 1241 roku brakowało ludności do choćby uprawiania pola, więc Król zaprosił osadników z n.p. Niemiec, Czech i innych krajów. Widać to po etymologii nazwisk. Komu nie pasowała nasza tolerancja religijna to już inna historia!

What a great and interesting video! This brought up so many good points that jews all around the world need to hear. @@marekkacperski7739 That's a perfectly valid question. To keep the answer short, nobody talks about the "founders" of those camps. As young children, we simply found out that they were in Poland. I'm sure adults know who started the war and who created the camps, but children don't have the historical background and many assume that Poland had something to do with them. Oh well, this video explains the situation and it gives a better perspective on the entire situation. We should work on having a better communication about those important historical events.

Growing up in Poland in the 90’s I have not commonly heard antisemitic comments or views, not in my family, not in my school, and not around my friends. The accusation of western world were so surprising to me and I couldn’t understand how we could live in two such different realities. Poland has always been a diverse country up to the point of WW2. The loss of diversity and utter helplessness to the events in our land is our loss and our trauma too. I doubt that two generations under communism turned us into xenophobic nation. This narrative just didn’t make sense to me but hearing your perspective I see how it could happen. Now that I live in the U.S. majority of my friends are Jewish and I think it’s because we naturally gravitate toward one another as if we shared culture or some kind of genetic memory - which we apparently do. You probably know that, but for anyone reading comments: Concentration camps were German, built in occupied Poland. Poles were being executed in those camps too. During that time the penalty for giving Jews asylum was execution of the entire family. Yet despite that threat many Polish families welcomed Jews to their homes. Many of those families suffered the penalty.

Polska jest fajnym krajem z przyjaznymi ludźmi. Każdy, kto jest pozytywnie nastawiony do Polski i Polaków i chce poznawać naszą kulturę i historię jest mile widziany. I am a Polish person and I have also been raised listening to the horrible stories told by my gradma about surviving the WW2. So I can relate, I think this experience may cause the perception of many things to be similar to yours :) Cool video :)
I'm from a similar background but a generation younger. My grandma, and his parents, was sent off from Poland to Brazil when the ww2 ended and new here we are planning to go to Poland, to visit and maybe stay but who knows

Weź dobry dmuchany materac kolego. Ja jak wróciłem z emigracji w UK zaledwie po 5 latach, to moja poduszka nie zamortyzowała do końca zderzenia z rzeczywistością tutaj. Zanim człowiek stanął na nogi, minęło trochę. Przede wszystkim pod kątem kosztów życia. Finansowo się zabezpiecz, reszta powinna pójść gładko.
Speaking of culture and folk bands - a dozen or so years ago I was on holiday in Portugal, one evening we were walking around Porto and there was a bandstand in a small square with a folk band (dressed in uniform costumes) singing songs and dancing (I think). My Polish ear immediately picked up familiar sounds, folk melodies very similar to Polish ones but a bit different - surely from the part of Europe like Poland - Lithuania? Latvia or maybe the Czech Republic? It wasn't the climate of Eastern Europe either - certainly not Belarus, Ukraine nor Russia. But I started looking at the young performers on stage and everything stopped adding up, because none of them were blond, and all of them had a rather southern, darker complexion and a Mediterranean beauty. The music definitely did not fit the Balkans, Italy or the southern musical climate in general. I was confused a bit and then I looked behind me and noticed a white bus and in front of it a tall guy dressed in a suit and tie - unusual for a hot summer evening. A moment later I saw a small blue Star of David on the bus.

During my studies, I had a friend who was a member of a university folk song and dance band (pol. Zespół Pieśni i Tańca) - he went abroad with the band at least once a year (France, Spain, Italy) and in return, a folk band from the French or Spanish University came to Poland. In addition, his folk band took part in ceremonies at the University or somewhere in Poland at holiday celebrations or harvest festivals. There are probably such groups in Israel, and the one I saw in Portugal had a repertoire based on folklore from the hometown of its artistic director, from which he returned to Israel. Unfortunately, I didn't register the band's name.
Great story. I am Polish, my grandmother had Jewish and German friends when she was a child, unfortunately the war changed everything. I hope that one day we will write a new positive history as a society

When you talked about learning about Holocaust since you were a kid - same here. I'm Polish and I can't even remember when i learned about the Holocaust first 🤔 I was really shocked when I found that the Americans (and im sorry to be including Canada here too) don't spend as much time on it as we do (but then again, it all happened here). We didn't read Anne Frank though - we had a couple much much darker works as obligatory reading in highschool. In my mind, when I was learning about Polish literature specifically, there was a lot of important Jewish authors out there, and I was sometimes shocked when i saw polishness and jewishness separated outside of that context. It was and is strange to me that Israeli citizens whose family were Polish Jews could be so prejudiced against Poland. For example, an important person in Polish culture is Julian Tuwim, a poet and writer who was Jewish and also considered himself a Pole. Not to mention such a great hero as Marek Edelman. Can someone please explain to me why Germany isn't mentioned when children and people in general are taught about the Holocaust?? Ive heard that Israel blames Poland for the Holocaust, this is so absurd I can't even. It offends me greatly as someone whose greatgrandmother was murdered in Auchwitz, leaving my 12 year old grandma all alone (she wasn't Jewish of course).

Michael, I hope you read this even though it's nine month late. Interesting what you said about the influence of the holocaust. I saw someone interviewing Jewish kids and asking them about when the war started and they thought it was in 1941. Czeslaw Milosz, a well-known Polish poet used to argue that the term "holocaust" should apply to the entirety of WW2 Perhaps "shoah" would have been enough since everyone knows the meaning of that word. As far as I know, with the exception of perhaps Yugoslavia and Greece, the occupation of Poland was the worst. My mom who was 13 was helping her mom by selling food over the walls of the ghetto in the little town we lived in and she got caught by a German guard. Somehow the Jewish customer who knew German well managed to convince the guard to let her and him go for half of the sugar. I am almost ready to say that the guard must have been a better sort than most but then I am pretty sure he wouldn't have minded killing them both. The war was a complicated thing with an infinite number of human interactions that are almost impossible to understand by those who haven't lived it, as I am sure you agree. The reason I think that the term holocaust should have been used for the entire burning because that would have been more inclusive. Instead hardly anyone talks about the suffering of other nationalities or ethnicities, which is a shame. I would love to see a movie made about "Zegota". Poland is looked down upon by Germany and other Western nations. In the US for a long time we were not considered fully white (might be profit in that these days - kidding). Anyway, here I am in America and I would love to talk to you about your impressions in both Polish and English. By the way, as I think I mentioned, I studied under Trungpa Rinpoche. The friends that I had which happened to be Jewish have been people who helped me a lot as a new immigrant to America, and sometimes I wondered if they didn't do it because my background was Polish. I recommend reading "History of Jews in Poland" by Iwo Pogonowski and of course Hannah Arendt books, if you haven't had a chance to read them. before i moved to poland for a year i thought it would be grey and grim. and it was! but the people were friendly and welcoming generally. though there were some powerful exceptions to that. overall i have good memories of the place, it was just a few years after the fall of communism, it was a real experience.

Były wyjątki ale to był bardzo mały procent. Żydzi byli Polakami tak samo jak dziś Kaszubi czy Ślązacy. Piękne narody naszej kochanej Polski. Tę mentalność zabili najpierw Niemcy a później na Kresach poprawili Sowieci. Nagle Polska stała się monolityczna narodowo a Polacy do dziś boją się wpływów innych niż nasze. What a great and interesting video! This brought up so many good points that jews all around the world need to hear. They are obsessed about Israel but forget that many/most of their families lived in Poland for at least a 1000 years and that this is actually their homeland, yet they are taught to alienate and feel distant to this beautiful country because of what Germans and even Russians did to some degree

You’re absolutely right. History doesn’t teach us about Germans who organized those Nazi camps on Polish territory. Those stereotypes are mostly formulated by “stupid” Americans. We don’t have to identify as Polish but we should know our history and may identify as Polish Jews.

@@marekkacperski7739 That's a perfectly valid question. To keep the answer short, nobody talks about the "founders" of those camps. As young children, we simply found out that they were in Poland. I'm sure adults know who started the war and who created the camps, but children don't have the historical background and many assume that Poland had something to do with them. Oh well, this video explains the situation and it gives a better perspective on the entire situation. We should work on having a better communication about those important historical events.

Once again Ukrainians and Jews in Poland. What can go wrong?
Growing up in Poland in the 90’s I have not commonly heard antisemitic comments or views, not in my family, not in my school, and not around my friends. The accusation of western world were so surprising to me and I couldn’t understand how we could live in two such different realities. Poland has always been a diverse country up to the point of WW2. The loss of diversity and utter helplessness to the events in our land is our loss and our trauma too. I doubt that two generations under communism turned us into xenophobic nation. This narrative just didn’t make sense to me but hearing your perspective I see how it could happen. Now that I live in the U.S. majority of my friends are Jewish and I think it’s because we naturally gravitate toward one another as if we shared culture or some kind of genetic memory - which we apparently do. Welcome back.

Concentration camps were German, built in occupied Poland.
Poles were being executed in those camps too.
During that time the penalty for giving Jews asylum was execution of the entire family.
Yet despite that threat many Polish families welcomed Jews to their homes.
Many of those families suffered the penalty.

Polska jest fajnym krajem z przyjaznymi ludźmi. Każdy, kto jest pozytywnie nastawiony do Polski i Polaków i chce poznawać naszą kulturę i historię jest mile widziany. I'm from a similar background but a generation younger. My grandma, and his parents, was sent off from Poland to Brazil when the ww2 ended and new here we are planning to go to Poland, to visit and maybe stay but who knows

Brother of my greatgrandfather was in Auschwitz, he survived, but he wasn't a jew he was a polish factory worker before the war.

Speaking of culture and folk bands - a dozen or so years ago I was on holiday in Portugal, one evening we were walking around Porto and there was a bandstand in a small square with a folk band (dressed in uniform costumes) singing songs and dancing (I think). My Polish ear immediately picked up familiar sounds, folk melodies very similar to Polish ones but a bit different - surely from the part of Europe like Poland - Lithuania? Latvia or maybe the Czech Republic? It wasn't the climate of Eastern Europe either - certainly not Belarus, Ukraine nor Russia.
But I started looking at the young performers on stage and everything stopped adding up, because none of them were blond, and all of them had a rather southern, darker complexion and a Mediterranean beauty. The music definitely did not fit the Balkans, Italy or the southern musical climate in general. I was confused a bit and then I looked behind me and noticed a white bus and in front of it a tall guy dressed in a suit and tie - unusual for a hot summer evening. A moment later I saw a small blue Star of David on the bus.
Fascinating. Did you figure out their name? I wonder what they were doing there.
@@lerubenfeldThey were probably students from some university in Israel, who were on a cultural exchange in Portugal. During my studies, I had a friend who was a member of a university folk song and dance band (pol. Zespół Pieśni i Tańca) - he went abroad with the band at least once a year (France, Spain, Italy) and in return, a folk band from the French or Spanish University came to Poland. In addition, his folk band took part in ceremonies at the University or somewhere in Poland at holiday celebrations or harvest festivals.
There are probably such groups in Israel, and the one I saw in Portugal had a repertoire based on folklore from the hometown of its artistic director, from which he returned to Israel. Unfortunately, I didn't register the band's name.
Great story. I am Polish, my grandmother had Jewish and German friends when she was a child, unfortunately the war changed everything. I hope that one day we will write a new positive history as a society

When you talked about learning about Holocaust since you were a kid - same here. I'm Polish and I can't even remember when i learned about the Holocaust first 🤔 I was really shocked when I found that the Americans (and im sorry to be including Canada here too) don't spend as much time on it as we do (but then again, it all happened here).
We didn't read Anne Frank though - we had a couple much much darker works as obligatory reading in highschool.
In my mind, when I was learning about Polish literature specifically, there was a lot of important Jewish authors out there, and I was sometimes shocked when i saw polishness and jewishness separated outside of that context. To me they were always Poles who also were Jewish, and it's still kind of shocking to see it separated. Glad to see you reconnecting with your heritage!
exactly! For some reason I have always thought of eg. Marek Edelman or Bruno Schultz as both Poles and Jews. In my mind they are both Polish and Jewish.

I know a few younger Jewish folk who have a negative view of the country because of the history of Polish-Jewish relations.
I don’t blame them as I also know polish folk who still hold a very negative view of Germans and Russians for the same reason.
It was and is strange to me that Israeli citizens whose family were Polish Jews could be so prejudiced against Poland.
For example, an important person in Polish culture is Julian Tuwim, a poet and writer who was Jewish and also considered himself a Pole. Not to mention such a great hero as Marek Edelman.

Can someone please explain to me why Germany isn't mentioned when children and people in general are taught about the Holocaust?? Ive heard that Israel blames Poland for the Holocaust, this is so absurd I can't even. It offends me greatly as someone whose greatgrandmother was murdered in Auchwitz, leaving my 12 year old grandma all alone (she wasn't Jewish of course).

By the way, I recommend you listening to Jacek Kaczmarski's songs - he's a true master of words, in my opinion he's the greatest poet (if that's the right word to describe him) this country has seen. Michael, I hope you read this even though it's nine month late. Interesting what you said about the influence of the holocaust. I saw someone interviewing Jewish kids and asking them about when the war started and they thought it was in 1941. Czeslaw Milosz, a well-known Polish poet used to argue that the term "holocaust" should apply to the entirety of WW2 Perhaps "shoah" would have been enough since everyone knows the meaning of that word. As far as I know, with the exception of perhaps Yugoslavia and Greece, the occupation of Poland was the worst. My mom who was 13 was helping her mom by selling food over the walls of the ghetto in the little town we lived in and she got caught by a German guard. Somehow the Jewish customer who knew German well managed to convince the guard to let her and him go for half of the sugar. I am almost ready to say that the guard must have been a better sort than most but then I am pretty sure he wouldn't have minded killing them both. The war was a complicated thing with an infinite number of human interactions that are almost impossible to understand by those who haven't lived it, as I am sure you agree. The reason I think that the term holocaust should have been used for the entire burning because that would have been more inclusive. Instead hardly anyone talks about the suffering of other nationalities or ethnicities, which is a shame. I would love to see a movie made about "Zegota". Poland is looked down upon by Germany and other Western nations. In the US for a long time we were not considered fully white (might be profit in that these days - kidding). Anyway, here I am in America and I would love to talk to you about your impressions in both Polish and English. By the way, as I think I mentioned, I studied under Trungpa Rinpoche. The friends that I had which happened to be Jewish have been people who helped me a lot as a new immigrant to America, and sometimes I wondered if they didn't do it because my background was Polish. I recommend reading "History of Jews in Poland" by Iwo Pogonowski and of course Hannah Arendt books, if you haven't had a chance to read them. "Eichmann in Jerusalem" is available on RUclips as an audiobook.
That's why names have so much power. That's why Polish people get angry when you say Nazis instead of Germans, And Polish Concentration Camps instead of German Concentration Camps in Poland. Because if you don't know history well, just by saying those names you change it (the history) and tell a different story.

before i moved to poland for a year i thought it would be grey and grim. and it was! but the people were friendly and welcoming generally. though there were some powerful exceptions to that. overall i have good memories of the place, it was just a few years after the fall of communism, it was a real experience.

Poland has changed a lot since then. You wouldn't recognize her. It has become a truly beautiful country.

Ogromna część społeczności żydowskiej stanowili tacy którzy de facto chcieli państwa w państwie. To trochę pokłosie debilnych praw jakie nadali im w przeciwnika królowie polscy, jak własne sady itd.
Po utworzeniu II RP domagali się między innymi wprowadzenia hebrajskiego jako 2-go oficjalnego języka urzędowego.
Najbardziej na takich ludziach poznali się ci ktorzy zyli w zaborze pruskim. Tam żydowskiej byli bardziej pruscy od Prusaków, i nie bez powodu Wielkopolska została stolicą Endecji i po odzyskaniu niepodleglosci, najpierw przepędzano większość żydów.

I heard story from my friend(witness) that visiting Aushwitz teenagers from Israel was behaving very disrespectful towards some innocent old man...and she explained to me that it's in fact lack off education. Those trips in concentration camps are all presented by Jewish tourist guide so all information are one sided. Anyway happy to see that people with such a rich heritage are showing their lives and different perspective.
