The Name You Need To Know In Freeski | Meet Eileen Gu

- For teenage freeski pro Eileen Gu, the decision of a lifetime didn’t come easily, but she did what had to be done.
Having already earned her first World Cup victory at the FIS Freeski World Cup at just 15, San Francisco-born Eileen Gu looked to her mother’s birthplace of China for a new challenge ahead of the 2022 Olympic Games - to inspire a new generation of athletes far away from the celebrated ski credentials of North America.
Choosing to compete for China rather than the United States came at a cost for Gu, but she’s certain it won’t be long until the decision pays off - it’s already having a huge effect.

Cannot stop loving this girl. She is so confident and calm. At such a young age, she is absolutely talented and mature. Go Eileen!
Congratulations to Eileen Gu! Fully respects her decisions and her support for the Chinese side of her. Sports should be about personal talent / interest and not politics. USA is supposed to be a free country, so act like one and let her do what she want and represent who ever she wants. So proud of her for taking a stand against all the bullies out there.
可惜的是当你代表一个国家去参赛时,本身就已经是一种政治宣誓了。不管你代表的是谁。
I'm just fascinated by her. Never in my life have I heard of seventeen year old who is a elite pro athlete by weekend who is at the top of her sport, a regular student by day, a part time model, a state level runner, and scores insane high1580 SAT score out of 1600. Boggles the mind.
and a decent pianist & bilingual in english/chinese. it's amazing.
she's the chosen one
it's called "gifted". some people just have very high IQ and everything is easy for them. and she has great discipline (tiger mom) ...
and she's very pretty
She is amazing!
Eileen is an inspiring young lady with multiple talents. Way to go Eileen and wish you all the best. 👍👏👏👏
She is a genius! Most amercian borned Chinese (ABCs) can't even speak Mandarin fluently. But she is a native Mandarin speaker with Beijing accent!
TO be fair, you don't need to be a genius to speak your native tongue. Just need your parents to have super shit English, lol.
@@jlim003 I know plenty of people with parents with “shit English” but still only speak their second language at a “just okay” level, in everyday stuff like what they want to eat for dinner, where are they going today, etc. They may think they are “fluent” in their second language but to be able to give TV interviews in that language without peppering English in every other sentence is guaranteed not easy. Only people who are truly bilingual know this.
@@jlim003 I guess you don't actually know Chinese. there s a big gap between native speaker and someone who is just fluent.
@@koumeue3998 I am Chinese. I have a couple friends who are migrated to Australia from Guangdong as teens. They had to speak Chinese to their parents everyday and became fluent in English by their 20s... Also, if you go to Europe, many Germans, french, Dutch etc are fluent in 2 languages.
@@koumeue3998 PS. No hate to her. I love her! I'm just nitpicking by saying it's not really a sign of genius. She might be a genius for other reasons. Eg getting in to Standford while maintaining a high level pro sports career.
Awesome Eileen, shows what hard work and dedication can accomplish. Crush it in the Olympics.
The best of two cultures....
the ignorance of two cultures
Wonderful gifted girl, she deserve to have the best from life!
So freaking talented! Go girl!
Watching this video after her getting three medals at Beijing 2022. Spot on!
level headed girl with a mission!
2022 dreams will come true!
That's so dope
I will remember her name! I will watch each her game!
Racing is too dangerous, freestyle must be safer lol, very cool
Her mother used to be a ski instructor in China.
*park is safe* lol
😂 her mom really help made history with that decision.
A real prodigy!

You mean ‘tough’?
well the whole world knows her now
for redbull this is called smart investment
加油! 北京大妞
my sister is good friends with her
goddessssssssssssss
If Eileen were full asian, no Americans make a fuss about her representing China.
This I agree. And if she was full Chinese, China wouldn’t make such a huge fuss either. They are in absolute awe that she can speak so well (because she’s doesn’t look full Chinese) although she is culturally raised Chinese by her caregivers.
🥳 Cool酷 Brilliant !I only know How to pay Basketball 🏀 Could you teach me!pleaseI 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Chinese pride
👍👍👍👍👍
First to like and watch and comment
No I was first
I make vlogs and newsy type vids straight from the streets of China in case you're interested!
“ I’m from San Francisco, California” , but competing for China.
we need more young people like her
美国人什么时候这么小气了

Dude Eileen, u r an american, born and raised. China didn’t do anything to train and support u

All these haters, LMAO

No i was first
谷愛凌加油
she not full chinese right? i think it just cause she wants to rep the home country in next olympics
Her dad is American.
@@theophiluszhou1796 that doesnt say alot. asian american or white american or what american, african?
if her dad is ABC she is full chinese
Chinese Americans are not Chinese. An American-born Chinese is, according to the Chinese government, not an American. Her dad is neither. Her dad seemed to be an European American, and if that's the case she was a 100% American and 0% Chinese when she was born (as one of her parents has the nationality of her country of birth), but since she has joined Chinese nationality, she's 100% Chinese and 0% American. Either way it doesn't look like she wants to mention her father anyway. If her father wasn't with her at the time she was born and her mother held neither American nationality nor American green card, then according to the Chinese government she's a Chinese national by birth and her American identity (if there was any issues) will not be recognized (which means the Chinese government would not stamp anything on her "American passport"). Since the Chinese media called her a "naturalized Chinese", the latter case doesn't seemed to be true.
"Chinese" is an ambiguous term in English because the same word is used for both ancestry/descent (族裔) and nationality/citizenship (國籍). It's important to clarify with context which meaning is intended. Maybe in English people should use "Han" instead of "Chinese" for the ancestry/descent term and it would be clearer.
How can she say "home soil" when she was born in the USA?
I can't imagine choosing to have any association with China(CCP) right now. It's not an exaggeration that wealthy Chinese often pay a lot to emigrate (flee) to the west. China is an amazing place and Chinese people are awesome but to many it's a much more surprising choice than an athlete choosing to represent Japan or Korea or basically any other country where they have roots and can find a good team and support system(Naomi Osaka comes to mind).
@@ph1am China is number 1 baby ;)
Yeah, strange how the Brits came and settled in America call America their home. They should call Britain home.
@@ph1am the girl has lived in China a quarter of her life before she made the choice while you got brainwashed by American propaganda and have not been in China for a single day. Go figure.
@Nathan Shi or where your money and benefits belong
You live in SanFransico but represent China... why?
Blood from she's Mom 美国华人 ABC
@@skyblock2773 she is mom a Chinese (ABC)
She is of mix race and lived every summer in China and raised by Chinese mother and grandmother. Her roots are across two continents. Her difficult and brave choice to ski for China is admirable as she chose a more difficult route but it will allow her to influence a much broader audience in a country where there are no role model to lookup to and if she wins she will great impact the sport and grow the sport which will benefit all in the sport.
I think it's good that she represents China. The U.S. has plenty of skiers. This is better for the competition.
So you don't think that foreign NBA players should represent their countries in the Olympics? Grow up man!!!!!!
Wow, she speaks English so well for being Chinese!!
R u dumb? She grow up in San Francisco!
someone didn’t watch the video
@@laonong2 So grow up in San Francisco must be an American? Eileen Gu often lives in Beijing and speaks Beijing dialect
@@gkurt6757 are you stupid? Comment is about her ability to speak English, I’m pretty sure Grow up in San Francisco helps.
@@laonong2 I think Farkman (odd last name) was being sarcastic and taking a jab at her denouncing her american citizenship, however its indeed a dumb comment, because there are loads of chinese nationalists who can speak perfectly fine english, don't have to be born and raised in an english speaking country for that.
Just wish you where representing usa
me to go usa
The U.S. has plenty of skiers.
Please, enough foreigners represent USA, consider every athletes ever represented USA are (or are descendants) of immigrants of other nationalities... unless native ofc.
she should represent her own country
She does represent her own country.
@@lightfootwind4068 The United States, a land stolen from Native Americans, and built through slavery. Northern California, San Francisco specifically, built through Chinese railroad workers.
She betrayed the slavers and genocidal perpetrators, but that's only a traitor to those who cherish the American Supremacy. Glad she not doing that.
she spent every summer in china. so she's just as much Chinese as she's American. so she has the right to choose whomever she wants to represent. her decision is to represent China because she can make a bigger influence that way. get outta here with that traitor talk...
North america, australia. Etc. Are all stolen lands by your definition.
She just joined West Korea, nice choice.
Why are you representing China instead of US?
Her choice.
Ethics? Money? All that?
Possible reasons or representing China: 1)she chose to because her mother is born in China
2)she was born in China but raised in the US
3)too much competition to make USA team, less to make China team.
We won’t know unless she says why.
Other athletes do the same for different sports. For many, to be able to make it to the Olympics no mater what country they represent, is worth it. Some countries do not require you to be a citizen, possibly just ancestry. US ski team is notoriously hard to qualify for with limited space and limited sponsorship.
@@corinnad4692 she was born and raised in US that she is US citizens but decided to give it up.
i guess she gets better chance there as the chinese government pours tons of money into the sports that can bring back medals. here you are pretty much on your own. the chinese canadian world champion skater chen almost did the same thing when he couldn't afford his training and had to ask for donations.
A future wife of a white hockey player.
Just imagine if a German American decided to compete for the motherland in 1936. Would you be sponsoring them too?
soure and ignorant!!!
It's quite normal in sports. I don't know if you watch ping pong / table tennis, Chinese players from China are representing countries like Germany and Australia in the Olympics.
it's 2021.... get with the times.
In the 1930s, Many chinese went back to china from all over the world, defended their motherland. Including zhou en lai, deng xiaoping.
Exactly well explained why she doesn't compete for white-racism-genocide-drugdealer country.
She just joined west Korea, nice choice.
wow So what about east Korea
Yes you will be able to inspire girls from not only China but all over the world which is wonderful. But Um, no you are not American anymore. You denounced your citizenship. You are now part of Communist China. When your in America you are still a Communist! Sorry but choices have consequences! That being said I still support your decision and am cheering for you. I hope when you get your journalism degree from China you will remember the freedoms you use to have when you were an American citizen and try to tell the Chinese people the truth. It will be hard because you were use to freedoms you will never have again! But praying for you and best of luck!
I have tell you the truth. You don't have much freedom than you think you do. All stuff you have watched and read is selected and filtered, so you have a very negative image of china. In fact, china is an amazing country.
@@ShuyanStoryTeller, I know China is a great country. I love China and all of the citizens. But what I’m saying is she gave up her American citizenship so she is not an American anymore. She said when she is in China she is Chinese and when she is in America she is an American and I’m just stating that is not the case anymore. I’m not saying it’s good or bad but it’s a choice. I Love both China and the US. My wife is Asian. But you have to admit her choice of being a journalist will be different then if she was in America. But all that being said I think she is an amazing person with amazing talent and I supported her winning the gold today and hope she wins the next two!
@@KHallesy Thank you :) I love Americans too, and china still needs to learn from US. Hope we will see more cooperation and understanding between chinese and Americans. Don't let politicians divide us. Than you again
@@ShuyanStoryTeller , your exactly right. We need to learn from China too. But the truth is everyone in America loves the Chinese citizens. We are going through some growing pains here but in the end most Americans are good people with good hearts too! So if only our politicians could bring us together we would have world peace forever! I Love your comments you are a good person!
Dude, her American father left the family, she was raised by her Chinese mom. and she was 15 or so when CCP knocked on her door. She cant blame her for not understanding politics and the 'wrong' decision she made, and probably not hers.
SUCH A SHAME OF DA WORLD SHE IS, SAME AS HONG KONG POLICE,NEVER FORGET
JULY 21ST. WHERE IS PENG SHUAI?? FREE HK. 光復香港
Enjoy your virus now, LMAO.....
She is an absolutely amazing skier who voluntarily chose to represent China. I do not support China's very recent actions related to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Uyghur genocide, Peng Shuai and overt restrictions on freedoms of speech and the press. Unsubscribed.

Shameless! She joined the evil side. Wish her all the worst!
Nope, you want to ski for China? I watch to see you lose. That’s all from here on out. Fail away!
Why can't American born kids join other nations' citizenship? No immigration freedom for Americans?
@@achristian1643 If you're going to compete for another nation, you should probably renounce your American citizenship and stop taking advantage of its benefits
