Big Tom came to the Tullyglass hotel one night to perform. I'd not much notion of going but a couple of boys talked me into going. Anyway we landed out and there was a wee van unloading guitars, amps and suchlike. Then Big Tom appeared and the one of the hotel staff, possibly the hotel manager was talking to him. One of the boys I was out with (Cricky Houston) went over to meet Tom. Tom wasn't too pleased with either how he was approached or by what was said to him, anyway he was busy and Cricky was a bit pushy, Tom warned him to stand down and back off. The night went on and there was some craic. The drummer was telling dirty jokes between a couple of song's and we all had a fair few Guinness and Bushmills, Tom and the band played and we left before the last song. We were all fairly well lit and it was late and we were in the side carpark waiting on a lift back home. We spied the band coming out and Cricket tried his luck with big Tom. Tom wasnt having any of it and shouted "right you drainpipe rat bastard c'mere" he throttled Cricket, punched him and sent him flying into the side of the van. None of us moved and were shocked. Tom told Cricket to stay down or "I'll scatter yer teeth over Ballymena" Big Tom could handle himself alright and I heard in work a couple of days later that an RUC car with two policemen saw the whole lot and would've lifted Cricket only for the fact the Barracks were full.

Funny dat you say this. My brother used to tell us storys dat big tom was handy. He used to tell us a story that big tom Gerry Anderson and the mainline drummer was at a dance in ballycastle. Would have been 1960s times. Dat they got pure drunk and Gerry was lifting girls skirts and a boy said Gerry sure yur a shirt lifter and dat big tom got up and fly kicked the boy into the tables. The mainline drummer sat on the body's face until he got pulled off. My brother said dat somebody in the place put LDS into the drinks so dat they were all drunk and off the there trees. Three of them sat laughing after and dat the the man that got punched laughing wit them. Awk it was all gud honest fun but big tom was handy. I foned the BBC radio show a couple of times to ask Gerry if he remember it but I never got thru. He was in a showband at dat time. The mainliner drummer was a bad wee article. But big tom took no crap. One day my bro jim was in the south on a meal lorry and dat he saw big tom flying up the street on a quad.
