[06 June 2022] For years, I'd gone around saying I wasn't interested in ska or rocksteady or reggae. But the other day, I found myself reading an article about Lee Scratch Perry, and I realized that I'd better listen to some of his music, just so I could say I knew what he sounded like. I listened to this song, and for the past forty-eight hours or so, it's been the one song I really want to listen to.
RIP....a true legend. Keith Richards once said of him "More than a producer, he knows how to inspire the artist’s soul. Like Phil Spector, he has a gift of not only hearing sounds that come from nowhere else, but also translating those sounds to the musicians. Scratch is a shaman."
I followed him all my life, bought every album an cd I could, then my wife got tickets to see him, in Vicar Street, Dublin, Ireland. What a gig, I was on exstacy and weed, by the time he finished, I had to go outside for air, just standing on the pavement, and he came out and shook my hand before he got in the limo. Then my wife giving out coz I left her in the gig on her own, and me in total bliss, I shook his hand.

This has been a very sad week. In the same we lost a true legend in Charlie Watts the world has lost another true legend in Lee Perry the King the original Upsetter. Responsible for many ska and rocksteady classics and made many memorable recordings with Bob Marley. His only UK hit was Return Of Dangjo by the Upsetters which he produced and was used in a Cadbury advert. RIP Lee Perry and thank you for many great recordings.

Marley was in a vocal group before - like many at that time. Then he went solo. The international breakthrough for Marley happened because his management decided that guitar solos and the like should be added to the reggae sound. Most of that you know already, I reckon. Just wanna type a few words and I'm not yet feeling ready to go to bed. °*°*°*°°**°°*°* (#.^)

Yeah, they kinda did - we're talking about Chris Blackwell here, and Island records. It was part of a move to make reggae more attractive to an international audience. And also alienated part of the original audience for it, who regard Bob as having 'sold out'. A well-known part of the story, actually...
i count myself a lucky boy i had the great privilege of seeing scratch on the warped tour in '98 with rancid, voodoo glow skulls and a few others. i just remember no one in the audience could adapt to his otherworldliness but i stood there magnetized. rip you prince of unfiltered sound.
