      rvprepperwayne But can you plug it into another UPS? Like a long chain of them so when 1 runs out of juice it starts pulling from the next one in line?

    this is an excellent idea. I got this intuition a couple of years ago and i started my collection of UPS modules. For now, all my electronic in the living room is working on 2 UPS modules and the computer on a third bigger module. These modules produce a very pure sinus wave AC and this is excellent for TV and other electronics. This is also a big protection for expensive electronic big screen TV.

    yup. these things are a gold mine if you live where the lights go out a lot.they are at the transfer station , [the dump ], all the time. i got one that is 860 watts .it used 2 12 volts for 24 volt input. i put 128 amp hour deep cycle battery on it .it runs my 32 inch flat screen,laptop computer,modem ,wifi router,a stereo and some compact fluorescent lights,no problem ,for 7 hrs. these are not very fast chargers though .i had new batteries ,[about 80 bucks each]. i gave them a good first charge with the battery charger because it would have taken days. the overhead lights in my house were on separate breakers ,so i installed an outlet for that breaker and a plug from the lights .now i have another UPS on all the lights and used all fluorescent bulbs. now when the power goes out in my neighborhood, my 32 inch flat screen,laptop computer,modem ,wifi router,a stereo and some compact fluorescent lights ,never even blink . i'm going to hook my solar panal up to it to see if it works to keep it charged . if it works,i'm putting it in my 1969 fireball camper that i'm restoring.it did not have fancy battery charging stuff .but mine will be pumping out the bass .

    I picked up an older one at a yard sale a couple months ago for $4. I knew the battery would be toast but I like to tinker with electronics.
    I found the user manual for it (an APC, smaller than the model you've got here) and the manual said something about the battery terminals having potential above ground. I tested it and, sure enough, the peaks above ground potential of AC mains runs to both posts of the internal battery (~ 60v AC), with a DC offset between the two to charge the battery, when it's plugged in and charging the battery.
    What I'm trying to say is that the one I've happened upon could give a person a shock. Be cautious and at least probe for potential to ground. Turn your multimeter to AC and check for voltage between the points you might touch and ground (ground of an outlet for instance).

    • @nodriveknowitall702
      @nodriveknowitall702 9 лет назад

      nodriveknowitall Could give a person a shock just by touching the battery terminals, something a person wouldn't normally expect.

      nodriveknowitall I went to get the supply. It's not an APC. It's an Eclipse plus 250 made by MGE UPS SYSTEMS and the warning about voltages between the battery and ground is on the bottom of the case. It's an old supply, hopefully they don't make them like this anymore.

    I have a 330 watt APC BE600M1 with a 140 watt load. I hooked to a deep cycle lead acid marine battery to the UPS battery wires with the UPS battery still installed in the UPS. It wouldn't work at all powered by the marine battery unless the UPS battery was still hooked up. . The marine battery is supplying 12.5 volts to the UPS but it pretends like it isn't even there and shuts down in 15 minutes same as it does without the marine battery hooked to the wires. I don't understand why?

  • @coondogtheman
    @coondogtheman 8 лет назад

    I gotta do this and use a jumpstart box to power it. I did mod a smaller portable inverter which had a dead battery but it only puts out 80 volts AC for some reason. It had a 9.6 volt battery inside. Not sure if pumping 12 volts into a 9.6V circuit has anything to do with it but I hooked a 9.6 volt battery that goes to my RC car and it gave the same 80 VAC. Will be keeping an eye out for one of these UPS units.

    • @rvprepperwayne
      @rvprepperwayne  8 лет назад

      +coondogtheman1234 Some units will have a low output with no load. If a load is added the voltage increases. as far as the 9.6 battery that is a new one on me. I have never seen one with a battery under the 12v mark.

    • @coondogtheman
      @coondogtheman 8 лет назад

      +rvprepperwayne this one is a black and Decker power to go and it just wouldn't hold a charge anymore so I decided to mod it. will definitely try that but it's not at all a strong inverter maybe enough to run a lamp or something small.

    • @coondogtheman
      @coondogtheman 8 лет назад

      +rvprepperwayne and the battery is just a bunch of NiMH batteries wires in pairs so you get more current at 9.6 volts.

    Have you ever repaired the charging part of one of these? I have the ES 500, and a new battery, but the unit does not seem to be able to charge the battery. I put a new 100% charged battery in it, and it registered at 100%, but if I use it on battery only, and run it down some, the unit will not re-charge it, and I don't know how to test it to see if it is trying to charge it - have you done a video that shows that? Like i don't even know how much voltage the unit should be delivering to the battery when it is trying to charge it, OR how to trouble shoot where the issue is if it is not delivering the voltage necessary to charge this battery - can't seem to find that information anywhere! Thanks for any help you can provide...

    one question, will the backup shut off automatically when it runs out of the alloted time it expects the battereies it was equipped with to run out or if say I hooked up a constant source of 12v DC will it just keep running as long as the voltage and amperage are there?
    I was looking at the actual chips on the boards inside and it looks like jumpering some of them over and cutting others off would guarantee it not shutting off and just continually drawing from the DC source, which is more what I am after, to get a DC source to an AC source to replace receptacles :)

    • @rvprepperwayne
      @rvprepperwayne  8 лет назад +2

      +Thomas Anderson It will run until the voltage drops to a set voltage.

      ah excellent knowledge, I got a ton of these (like 50 or more) that the batteries were partially depleted from a company that installs and maintains the fiber and cable running under city streets and over poles and such, so they routinely throw away partially good units to avoid any possible failures from waiting too long, and they dont pull the batteries or anything. just chuck the whole thing in a dumpster for the landfill and the box for the new unit at the same time, I had at one point over 50 of then and had stopped collecting them due to lack of space, unfortunately I ran even shorter of space and had to chuck all but maybe 10 I kept and about 10 or 15 I gave to a friend who got new batteries and put them back in service in his private server network. I even skipped on a bigger one that I found out later would have let me take 110 voltage to charge batteries and put out 220 voltage lol, still kicking myself over that one XD
      anyway the TL:DR of that is, check with local cable installers (the guys with trailers that have a giant spool of orange blue or black tubed cable,) for dead or nearly dead UPS units for free :)

    What type of batteries do use to replace the stock batteries?What is the largest capacity you have used? Have you noticed a difference between trickle charging UPS vs other smart charging methods that stop charging when the battery is fully charged?

    • @rvprepperwayne
      @rvprepperwayne  8 лет назад

      +Audito Canarsie The biggest battery I have used is a 32 amp hour. I have run it down to 11.5v and let it charge bacl to 12.7v in about an hour. I prefer SLA battery's. You can have them in the house without fear of off gassing. I like the charging of the UPS, It is a slow deep charge and it don't burn the battery. A stranded type charger that charges quickly will shorten the life of a battery.

    +Videsh Radhaykissoon and others asking about other battery types and longer run times... It is better to get a larger UPS for that 'big battery' situation, and particularly the ONLINE kind of UPS, which has a charging circuit equal to the entire load rating. The cheap BACKUP kind of UPS (as shown) only have a small charging circuit, not good for big batteries. Also, large UPS units of either kind have fans to cool their circuits as needed. Large UPS units are scrapped all the time, just like the small ones. In either case, it is usually because the batteries died. Note that larger UPS units often use more than 12 volts on the DC side, to reduce the amperage which must be handled. With old batteries in series for higher voltage, you can have issues with a weak battery in the series-connected string of batteries, so it works best with new batteries. I use Marine Starting batteries in some cases and Riding Mower (lawn tractor) batteries in other cases, depending on budget and desired run time. Also note that Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) batteries can tolerate a higher charging voltage than Flooded Cell lead acid, so the charging circuit in a UPS may overcharge flooded cell batteries, which "boils off" the acid. The APC brand seems to be particularly bad about excessive charging voltage, and it's hard or impossible to adjust the voltage in every APC unit I've used. A simple work-around 'hack' is to use anti-parallel diodes of appropriate current rating to knock a little off the voltage. Silicon diodes will trim off about 7/10th of 1 volt at low current, up to about twice that at high current. For BACKUP-type UPS hacks on 24-volt systems, I usually put 2 smaller diodes (like 10 amp rating) in series to knock down the charging voltage, in anti-parallel with ONE large diode to carry high current from battery to inverter, where you want to minimize the voltage loss. Using a large Schottky diode for the high current is better still, due to lower voltage drop with that type diode.

    how many amps can you charge through one of those? i take it the set needs to be wired for 12 volts
    thinking about making it the controller in an rv switching between main power batteries and solar , from wat you showed me it should be doable , cheap too inly thing you need to add is sumting that regulates the charge coming of the solar panels so the ups and solar dont charge the batteries at the same time

      I wouldnt run a big load on this. It cant handle it. Small loads like a few lights a laptop charger, and things like that would be ok. Its ment to be a Back Up, not a constant inverter.

My local yard has probably 80 tractor trailer containers filled with business and industrial surplus, and often sells items based on the current price of the scrap material.
      Put an ad on Craig's list. Lots of business and homeowners have 1 or 2 of these that the battery just died, as they do from not ever being used. Perhaps ask your attorney or insurance guy if he has an old one... usually they are happy to part with the fo'free

      So im guessing hear. You can charge Any battery as long it is 12v then??

    • @MagnumForce51
      @MagnumForce51 8 лет назад +1

      +orgsniper You can, but it's not really safe to use long term. Car batteries aren't designed for deep cycle discharging and if you overly discharge them, it could damage them. But a more immediate concern is that they aren't sealed, so if you tip them over you could spill battery acid and that would be bad. They can also leak hydrogen gas which could present a explosion hazard (this can be a even greater hazard if they become damaged or become overcharged).
      Generally it's not a good idea to use car batteries with these things inside the house. Just get a large deep cycle battery instead. (Sealed Lead Acid batteries like those used in electric vehicles like golf carts and the like for example)
      Also you can probably use lithium batteries with these too. But the charging circuits aren't designed for them (and battery capacity readouts if USB port is plugged into a computer to read what the battery capacity is, might not be accurate as the discharge voltage curve for lithium batteries is not the same as lead acid chemistry batteries), so you can probably run them off a lithium battery, but don't allow the UPS to charge them. ;)
      Most consumer UPS devices do not use trickle charging, so I don't think you really have to worry about over-charging batteries unless you have a really cheap one or some generic knock-off brand you bought online. :P

      No, these inexpensive ones make a simple nearly square wave. The sinewave versions cost a few hundred.

    Have this same UBS unit with a dead battery (already replaced it once in its life). I have it mounted under my solar array battery bank, so I got to thinking... why not just use the UPS as an inverter and connect it with a 12v pigtail to my battery bank fuse block. This gives me access to 6 110v plugs and a 12v power source to run my quail business incubator, auto heat control brooder or simply another outlet that I can use free juice.
    btw... there's no such thing as a free lunch. The laws of entropy exist in our world. Even the green new steal "all solar -free energy" has costs. Consider the Ave life of a lithium miner has to move 5000 tons of earth to get enough lithium for 1 12v battery, and his/her Ave life span is only 35 years. The green new deal has bigger costs that our current energy supply. Don't let the NWO rook you into believing your saving the planet (for their huge profit). Consider the 5 year old in Africa digging for lithium so the family can earn enough money and only survive another 20-30 years so TPTB can sell us eV cars they can control with the flip of a switch, soon able to tell you both when and where you will be allowed to take that $80,000 totally disposable bic lighter of a vehicle.

    Don't understand why anyone would think it was a "hack" to simply replace a UPS battery; on a unit which is obviously damaged and dangerous no less.

    1. Replacing the battery isn't a "hack". It's just normal UPS maintenance.
    2. Sometimes, the battery will have failed because of a bad capacitor in the UPS. It's almost always a large electrolytic with a bulging top. You don't even need to measure it. You just unsolder it and solder in a replacement which has identical specifications.
    3. f the UPS uses a lead-acid battery as most of them do, you can connect heavy wires to the battery leads and connect a larger external battery for a longer run time (but beware as this will also lead to a longer charge time).
    4. You can now get a protected lithium battery which is designed as a drop-in replacement for lead-acid gel-cell batteries and the lithium batteries have around three times the ampere-hour capacity. The only problem at the moment is that they are horrendously expensive when compared to their lead-acid cousins.
