The strength of children is just amazing, I used to work with abused and neglected children. Every day they amaze me with how resilient and resourceful they are to overcome the most horrendous of circumstances.😢 I can tell you this in all honesty, there are many nights they made me go to sleep crying.
Brilliant scene. Ricky showed his great range of acting skills during this scene. When the girl announced her name was “Lisa” the way he quickly looked up, as if to say; “of course you are” … what a moment that was. For the child to commit Ricky to coming to visit, and again the next day, or until she went to heaven … you could tell Ricky was looking at this beautiful, brave little soul and understanding how precious life is and how grateful we should be to grow old. I’d be curious to know how many takes were shot for this clip. Probably the best scene of season 3, or even the whole series in my opinion.
There was a moment in the series Derek where Kevin noted that Derek's 'super-power' was kindness. This is the moment in After Life where Tony learns the same thing. He thought his super-power was being able to do whatever he wanted to do, regardless of others. Now he sees that kindness is even more powerful. Soooooo Sweeeeet!!

I think it's so powerful seeing the journey Tony has gone through, he might not be completely there and likely never will be but he sees the beauty in living. Ricky is an absolute genius when it comes to writing, After Life is my favourite thing he's ever made
I agree with you. I’m on the same journey, having lost my husband to cancer so I can relate to everything he’s feeling. I know I’ll never be the same and that my grief will be with me always but I’m beginning to see the point of carrying on because there’s always something to live for.
What got me is Tony's atheism being confronted with dying children asking him "do you believe in heaven?". When he said "definitely", it was a moment I often consider as an atheist myself. Do we give children a comfortable and lovely lie or do we try to prove we are right? I am okay with a comfortable lie because they lose nothing by it if they pass away. That fear of the unknown, fear of darkness, fear of not existing disappears if you simply reassure them. I'm fine with it. If I can make a horrible situation a little brighter for them, I will never deny them that. To me it's the same as telling children Santa Claus is real and let them figure out that he isn't later. I have to admit I cried a little.
Well and there’s the scene where he wondered if Lisa was scared at the end because he was clear that he didn’t believe in heaven and said he thought it might be that she wanted to believe at the end and he wished he could have given her that comfort and letting her believe if that helped her not to be scared. So now he gets the chance to for someone else and learn from that lesson.💜
I don't believe in biblical and papal nonsensical and bastardized heaven. These children, and their lives, they're ought to be heaven, that's heaven for me.
As an atheist myself, I couldn't agree more. For me, the one thing that religion brings people which I would never aim to take away, is comfort. In these moments of fear and vulnerability, if somebody questions the existence of heaven, I will always say what brings them comfort. Its the right thing to do. Ricky Gervais, I feel, is the same and he wanted to show that via Tony... Many of Tony's opinions, thoughts, feelings are identical to Ricky's so I do think he used him as a voice for his thoughts, whilst making himself slightly disconnected from them.
I don't think you're right. Yes, Ricky may be lying, or maybe feels that he's lying. But I think that precise moment is not about the lie or the surprise that he gets because of the question. I think Tony gets confronted with the reality of not knowing where to go. He is helpless, he can't argue if there's heaven or not. Remember the question is well crafted. But Tony gets his grip, he remembers that his wife still lives in his heart, and maybe he can assert that there can be a heaven where you go after you die.

I lost my 13 year old wonderful cousin Monique to leukaemia. I hadn’t been able to properly grieve for her and felt like I wasn’t giving her what she deserved. Even carrying her coffin and saying goodbye I couldn’t bring myself to accept it. Well this scene finally gave her the tears she deserved. Cancer touches everyone in some way, unfortunately sometimes it also takes those who’s lives haven’t even yet begun. For anyone who is unfortunate enough to have experienced this, I hope you all found healthy grief in this scene as I did. Thank you Ricky this was long overdue
I do not remember ever watching a scene in a tv show where I cried harder or laughed harder in the same scene... From the interview with those darling girls, to the chat outside the room with the lad (and Tony discussing the internal make up of Lenny)... Unbelievable range of emotions all within 3 minutes...
What I like about this is that despite his simplicity and being the target of constant mockery Lenny is the pillar of morality in this scene. even as thick as he seems he knows that the right thing to do is for Tony to lie to the kid. And just like in real life real angels go unnoticed
Absolutely brilliant writing what more can you say. There are so many people who are experiencing and struggling with these issues day to day, this might just help those people who haven't been touched by grief to understand how others cope with the pain.
Having a daughter with cancer myself this bit was like living our life x Absolutely spot on with everything, afterlife was the best thing I’ve ever watched! Well done Ricky!
Lost one of my close lads to cancer a few weeks back he was only 31. Man this whole segment makes a grown man tear up. Blessings on those affected by such a horrible thing.
Watched this scene to many times to count...... beautifully written and so undeniably perfect to how thr heart deals with grief. As hilarious as you are Ricky, you have a huge heart and it shines through in this series. Its absolutely perfect
Absolutely broke down to this scene first watch. The fact Lenny is so unaware and almost dumb to everything he understood how Ricky felt. Powerful scene, best one I’ve seen in a long time
Brilliant acting yet again from Ricky Gervais as Tony. Also amazing support acting from the guy that plays Lenny to and of course the youngsters not to mention the nurses reaction. This scene made me cry like the many who have made comments here... Apart from the over use of swearing (in my view) - 'Afterlife' is both touching and very moving and makes many points that nearly all of us can relate to having lost dearly loved ones... Ricky Gervais is a genius - many thanks to him and the whole cast... RSN......
It's probably like all of us reacted. We where still reeling from the kid called Lisa and thought this sweet little moment could carry us over and then it finished us. I was fighting back my tears when the girl said she was called Lisa but they flowed like a waterfall after that kid said "or when I go to heaven".
The scene on the park bench before (where she called him her angel) teed it up but then this scene came along and smacked it across a par 5 course for a hole in one. I was in tears
You can’t argue that Ricky is a genius. His writing at times is beyond beautiful. He has you crying tears of sadness and happiness within seconds of each other. He takes you an emotional rollercoaster with every single episode.
Well filmed scene with just a touch of levity. I watched my uncle, father and sister die of cancer and this hit home hard. Thank you for doing it in such an expertly handled way.
I cried my damn eyes out. 😭 Or… until I go to heaven’ hit me like a truck. We take so much for granted as adults and whine over silly things. Children suffering like this though is unforgivable.💔😭
There is such purity in this scene which cannot be measured. This scene made me cry everytime I watch it...Great performance by Ricky..BTW I started watching the series after watching this scene... ❤️❤️❤️
My friend got alopecia when we were in 5th grade. I promised him I'd shave my head with him for as long as he went through it. I never really thought much about it. Shaved my head for the next 5 years or so .. But 10 years later I got a message from that boy, that was now a man. He told me how much it meant to him that I shaved my head so he wasn't the only kid in school with a bald head. We went our separate paths many years ago, but he reached out to me to thank me. Ripped my fkn heart out. I was just doing my best to be a good friend, but it meant the world to him. Stay by your friend's sides. I guess that's all I'm saying. It may not seem big to you, but it can mean the world to someone else
This was the best ending of a series ever! I cried again watching this last scene. I don't agree with the suicide speculations I think it was his statement of how life goes on and how short a time we really have on this earth. Beautiful!
Even though he doesn’t say anything, Lenny (Tony Way) brings so much to this scene, the look he gives Gervais when the kid asks if he believes in heaven almost like “Please don’t be a dick to him” and the smile when he says he does. Brilliant direction and writing.
I have cancer atm .at the end of chemotherapy now before a major operation to get rid of it .this seen really got to me what a brilliant program. 👏 to all my fighters keep fighting 💪 ❤
This scene really speaks to me personally in so many ways. Excellent portrayal by Ricky Gervais in how he wrote this script and the scene. I find my RUclips channel is what has allowed me to feel like I am helping others in similar circumstances. An amazing show, and one that has a far larger impact on people than I imagine he ever intended it to have.
One of the greatest shows and scenes of all time in my opinion How one moment you laugh and then you are crying The pain, grief and emotions are so real

this whole series was awesome...the laughing and the crying...a real emotional roller coaster the whole cast was great ....and the ending spectacularly done
That bit at the end is the most important part of Tony's journey. After all of the bitter, sarcastic and selfish talk of the previous episodes, he evolved to the point of forgetting himself and giving hope to a child. The greatest happiness we can ever find is giving something to others, and it doesn't matter how bad your own life seems, you can always lift yourself up by doing good for someone else.
i have watched this scene over and over, each time i cry as so fantastically real and such innocence from the two girls. Ricky ..... absolutely fantastic writing and acting. Thank you.
Ricky and the children well and truly broke me here. I'm think I'm one of the few lucky people in the world who haven't lost a loved one to cancer, but I've lost loved ones other ways. Rickys performance here was something special.
As a atheist it took Ricky a fellow atheist too fully understand what the purpose of religion should be about. Hope! Nothing more. Children need religion but adults don’t. Be an angel whilst you’re alive.
Yes it's important for a child to think there is a heaven and better place helps them cope with death. This is when religion works helping give strength to people Ill or struggling.

What a Brilliant Comedian and actor and a writer he is . . This show is absolutely a masterpiece like no others. .
Im 30. Im repressed. Im Irish and male, and i fucking ugly cried throughout this scene.
best post ever. cheers mate. I am going to use "ugly cried" now. brilliant!
Congrats, you're Irish and male.
@@H.K.5 congrats. thanks for restating his post with absolutely no humor.
@@dmlevitt Your first reply was even less funny.
Done beautifully once again, Just a great show that takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions.
absolute masterful bit of acting and scene so sad...
Having a daughter with cancer myself this bit was like living our life x
Absolutely spot on with everything, afterlife was the best thing I’ve ever watched!
Its absolutely perfect
this scene made me burst into tears
RSN......
I’ve only seen previews of this show, but I think this scene is so powerful.
This is by far one of the most beautiful scenes ive ever seen in a movie or tv show
The facial reaction from Ricky when the boy said “Or when I go to heaven?” was unreal.
My brother suggested this series for me. I laughed and I cried. I've seen this scene about 50 times and cried everytime. Thank you, so beautiful.
I’m not sure why, but I always come back to this video when I wanna feel something. Such a brilliant scene.
the way he says yeah breaks my heart @1:00
This scene not only tugs on my heart strings, it rips them out.
Well filmed scene with just a touch of levity.
I watched my uncle, father and sister die of cancer and this hit home hard. Thank you for doing it in such an expertly handled way.
This scene got me. How could you not cry to it
The innocence of children
The simplistic nature of children is the most beautiful thing god ever made
god doesn't exist
I cried my damn eyes out. 😭
Or… until I go to heaven’ hit me like a truck. We take so much for granted as adults and whine over silly things. Children suffering like this though is unforgivable.💔😭
Ricky is a genius , He can bring all the emotions that we have to any occasion ...
As someone who losses a family member to cancer almost every year
I cried so heavily
I’m weeping. This scene broke me, made me grateful and sad.
Beautiful!
Came here after saw this on tiktok.. Jeez couldnt hold back the tears 😭😭
Ugh, what are you doing on TikTok?
Man you don't stop a video here...we needed more😭😭
Even though he doesn’t say anything, Lenny (Tony Way) brings so much to this scene, the look he gives Gervais when the kid asks if he believes in heaven almost like “Please don’t be a dick to him” and the smile when he says he does. Brilliant direction and writing.
I have cancer atm .at the end of chemotherapy now before a major operation to get rid of it .this seen really got to me what a brilliant program. 👏 to all my fighters keep fighting 💪 ❤
Ricky is such a good actor. His emotions look so genuine. Its like he isnt even acting.
By far my favorite show and scene. Beautiful writing and it definitely brought me to tears
he is extremely talented! funniest man that can act that emotional
My wife and I sat in tears watching this so moving and funny at the same time ......brilliant
One of the greatest shows and scenes of all time in my opinion
How one moment you laugh and then you are crying
The pain, grief and emotions are so real
I think that Tony Way did a fantastic job in this scene, just brilliantly played, just enough input and sincerity to make it feel complete
Thank u Gervais. Thank u from deep of my hearth.
Beautiful Ricky. Thank you.
The more you watch it,the more beautiful it gets💚
It's a shame that you can only like a video once... i would like this video 10000000 times over... you've really outdone yourself Ricky... beyond words...
June 2024.. who's here? Kindness is timeless, its precious everytime moment when you feel it..
Beautiful poignant scene really provokes heartfelt emotions
Children faced with this kind of adversity have the most courage, the largest hearts, and as such possess the greatest love than we will ever know, for it is unconditional and such love for humanity is our very best leap toward divinity that we can muster. Carpe diem indeed! 😎
The wee girl called Lisa was a lump in the throat but the wee fella saying visiting until he goes to heaven... Bloody hell
This is impossible to watch without tears. He's so kind and wholesome to them.
Just binged watch the whole lot of Afterlife and this last episode have watched 4 times because of this scene but the whole, episode is just beautiful and makes me cry every time
Everytime i warch this scene i have to cry. Its fascinating how strong kids are when they know they would die maybe. That breaks my will not to cry every single time. Great scenes
i wish i could watch this for the first time again. i burst into tears the minute she said her name was lisa.
I've watched it many times, but the last lines always get me.
What a talent Ricky Gervais has of playing with emotions at exactly the right moment.
this whole series was awesome...the laughing and the crying...a real emotional roller coaster the whole cast was great ....and the ending spectacularly done
I cried so hard at this.. Brilliant.
i have watched this scene over and over, each time i cry as so fantastically real and such innocence from the two girls. Ricky ..... absolutely fantastic writing and acting. Thank you.
Its sad seeing a child talk about themselves dying it breaks u
Ricky and the children well and truly broke me here. I'm think I'm one of the few lucky people in the world who haven't lost a loved one to cancer, but I've lost loved ones other ways. Rickys performance here was something special.
I heard everything Lenny was thinking, what a phenomenal actor 👏
Yep broke me, we have had loss in our family. This was so brilliant and sensitive.
This is when religion works helping give strength to people Ill or struggling.
indeed Dean . I could not agree more. lovely post. stay safe.
Everyone needs it.
@@H.K.5 only the weak and credulous need it.
@@dmlevitt we're all weak
I lost my mom in cancer two weeks ago. Not a single second goes by without me missing her. It feels like my heart is broken into thousands of pieces.
This serie capture all the feelings that I feel right now. I'm not really religious but god I hope heaven exist and that I get to meet my wonderful mom again some day. Love you mom ❤️
The most important scene in the entire program. Ripped me open when the young lad said about going to heaven, I've got a kid about the same age and I could never imagine him saying anything like that
I don't cry often but with this I couldn't resist it. This is ❤️ and these children shouldn't have gone through this.
Life can be beautiful but sometimes so unbelievable hard.
Hope they get better....
What a soul shattering scene!
Children truly are HOLY and should be protected.
they are protected.
So well done . Hits home and makes you appreciate the value of life
I've never watched after life but that broke my tear ducts 😭😭 especially the last bit about heaven 💔😭
"...or until I go to heaven".... I'm beyond broken right now😭😭. God bless that beautiful boy and any other child dealing with juvenile cancer.
I can watch this 100x and still cry 😢😥😭
