Thanks for sharing the detailed description of your problem. I have no idea what are my consumer's rights are here in the US under the same issue, but your video has prompted me to do some research.
It's amazing that a retailer would sell crap and almost as amazing that the manager would tell you all the tools for the chain replacement they sell were crap. It speaks volumes for the lack of integrity of the retailer and how they view their customers. Since you received the same basic treatment from the woman on the phone as from the manager at your local retailer, it doesn't sound like a one-off issue with someone with a bad attitude. Take care.

Stuart, last year I watched Delboys Garage install a 525 chain on his wife's Triumph Scambler. He purchased a Sealy chain breaker / rivet kit from Wemoto. On the Sealy site it was for sale for 72 pounds. He found it on sale on Wemoto for 35 pounds or there about. This video is on his Scambler playlist back in February 2017. I live in California, USA so I don't own any Sealy tools and never dealt with Wemoto. I thought I would pass this along since he was successful in assembly of the chain link. PS ........ I finally got my Black Turn Signals from Motone Wednesday! Haha, took 6 months if you can believe it. Fender eliminator kit from Tec Bike Parts, Motone turn signals, K & N air filter and x pipe from Tec Parts. Motone would not ship me their X -Pipe to California. I would have bought it but California is restrictive. 49 state legal. Guess which state is a drag to modify your bike or cars. Haha. Drag racing, Hot Rodding and after market parts all started here in California. Luckily our motorcycles are not inspected on a yearly basis here. So on goes the x-pipe off goes the cat!

    Hello Stuart
Thanks for all the informative reviews. Now a new subscriber. Look forward to each one. An important question. Did you ever get your front brake squealing sorted ?
Also how about your moisture problems ?
Considering a 2018 T120 but won’t unless these issues are fixed by Triumph.
    Thanks and keep them coming.

The last time I used Machine Mart I bought a rather expensive bike lift with added £54 delivery charge only to be faced with a lorry arrive with just the driver with no pallet trolley to move the crate from the front of the large trailer to the back. I had to help him move it and with my arthritis in my elbows really was a struggle as it seemed to weigh the same as a small car. I complained to MM about it through their online procedure, complaining about the expensive delivery charge and having to help unload it myself but got no reply at all. They obviously struck me off their mailing list as I used to get regular invites to their discount days but that stopped from then on. As I said that was the last time I used Machine Mart and it will remain so.

Great info, thanks Stuart. I have a question about the chain replacement though that hopefully you can cover in the next video. Should you replace the sprockets at the same time? I read this all the time, but you don’t seem to be doing it here, so what is your perspective?

  • @stevenhill6214

Hi Stuart, had a similar problem with a company that supplied a shower pump. It was faulty straight out of the box and made a loud mechanical noise (louder than the one it was replacing) The company insisted that it would have to be sent to the manufacturer for testing which might take weeks, and that i probably hadn't installed it properly, it was put in the wrong place etc, (been plumbing for over 30 years). I was willing to accept a replacement of a different type of pump, but they kept on insisting that it had to be sent to the manufacturer so i thought, stuff you, i now want my money back. I contacted Trading Standards and got an incident report number which i emailed to the company and also gave them 7 days to refund my money, or further action will be taken etc etc. It went right down to the last day before the money appeared in my account. It seems that no matter how strong the consumer laws are, some companies will ALWAYS take liberties.

Ah yes. Customer service! I find here in the states that no matter the government's or company's policy it all comes down to the person you are talking to. After that you have to weigh out the effort to legally pursue and it's usually not worth it.

Did that chain you were replacing not have a master link? Our old Bonneville choppers used a Harley sportster chain we added about an extra foot to to make it long enough.

  • @jockd7
    @jockd7 5 лет назад +1

For to split the link on the OLD chain I leave the chain on the sprocket and use a small chisel to part the link..after you have ground the head of the link.. much quicker but take time and you can do easy....

I ummed and ahhhd about buying a chain tool and most seemed to be the same reboxed junk. I bought the genuine did item in the end and didn’t regret it. Same cost as paying someone to do the chain but now I can do the chain whenever I need

Hi Stuart, Yes welcome to the minefield of chain breakers and riverters. I normally just cut chain ( your angle grinder would have been up to the job I think ). Then these tools are normally fine for riveting the link although you still need to be carefull. I am using a Bergen one at the moment which has been fine for the soft rivet. Thanks for a another great motorcycle video with life experiences mixed in .

Years ago I needed the same tool. Instead of going to one of these places, MM Halfords etc, I asked a friendly back street motor mechanic about where to source one. . . He put me onto a company ( that I am not sure still exists) where he got his chain breaker from. . . It was expensive even back then early 80s , . . Yes, I hail from such vintage. .
    This cost around £40 then . . . But it's a solid piece of kit. .

I added these to my Bonnie some time before you posted this video. Mine (yes, Motone) came rather grayed (oxidized?) but shined right up with a few coats of tire shine. However I learned the brand of tire shine (ok - tyre :) ) makes a difference this weekend while prepping her for the DGR. I changed brands and for the first time, after riding to the DGR starting point, found my pants blackened on the inside of my knees. Now to remember what I used before and relegate the new stuff to ONLY tires (sorry, autocorrect keeps taking out the 'y'...)

I was thinking about Kellermann KTW 2,5 but have no knowledge if it is worth the money (about 100 eur plus tool for solid rivet links 15 eur)... Pretty expensive for a tool that is used rather seldom. Actually I have bought more expensive tools and used them once. Happy so, otherwise I could have wasted the money... And, they say if you want to have good work do it yourself (twice or three times, that is).

that was a great video because i had bought a generator from them last year and i had 2 exchanges and and both of them had the same problem they just burst into flames. so i contacted the store and they were so rude and just told me that i was the only person having this issue so i then contacted customer services and then the guy on the phone did eventually tell me that there is a faulty batch going and they had started doing a recall

Machine Mart and other retailers need to be careful, when describing their products are crap. Reminds me of Ratners, the ex high street jewellers chain. In 1991, the CEO after describing some of their base price items, at a meeting at the Royal albert Hall London, said.... "How can we sell this at such a low price?", I say, "because it's total crap." After that speech, RATNERS was given the mock name of CRAPNERS! Their share price fell by £500M and 300 shops were closed.

Stuart, you missed a trick. I had a similar problem with MM, and the first thing I did when I walked in the store was ask for the upgraded tool before I spoke to the manager. Then when I asked for the manager, he had no options. I already had the replacement tool in my hand.
Always get the replacement item FIRST, then make the complaint.

Stuart, it's one option for a shop / retailer to refund you - the other ones are repair or exchange. That's common in UK and EU law - so nothing wrong if refund is offered. However, I understand that it isn't fun to buy a tool for a given job just to find out during the process that the tool isn't fit for the purpose. It would have been wise from the sales person to upsell you to a high quality tool as that would helped you more then the money, but suggesting that their offer of a refund is shady is quite a stretch. Stay safe
