it's great to see this classic being performed by the original line up of this band... I don't think it was ever the same after the departure of Jesse and the others..
I miss the "old" Shins. Marty, Jesse and Dave (and Neal) were a collection of unique personalities and abilities with history. They brought something unusual and raw to the music. And they had that New Mexico connection to one another. Nothing lasts forever...but it ended too soon--and before it had a chance to really play itself out. Those first three albums were a lot of fun.
In response that the world is deaf. Nay , the world is not deaf . I'm 59 and I've heard them . It's the curse of being an artist . Not everyone makes it, even if you have talent . Just enjoy the gems you have found and share them with others. Just a humble opinion.
So few songs out there match the sophistication, brilliance and originality of The New Pornographers (one of the two best bands in the world in my lifetime), but this one does.
It's pretty much always been that way though. I've ben a fan of music all my life and the good stuff usually gets left behind. Thank God for youtube or I might never have been able to hear all the songs that I have loved over the years.
Nah there are still a few great ones out there, you just gotta sift through the shit. I'm not sure whether it's all to your taste but you might like Real Estate or Japandroids, there are a few others, but I agree 100% with your comment. The direction today's music industry is taking actually scares me.
I dare anybody to try to sing this song. Really, just try it. James Mercer songs are not easy to sing. This isn't his best rendition, but holy crap...who could sing this song that well?
Yuppie music my ass, why because its not ppl screaming or using gimmicks to make music? The Shins could very well be the last great band out there. I have been to concerts where all they play their songs and the only thing you can recognize are the lyrics. Because they cant even play their own music live. The Shins can play anything on any of their albums and have it sound exactly as it did. If you cant even play your own music live your a bad band and thats about 99.88% of all bands out
One of the greatest lyrics in any song and that outro is monumental.
Still one of my favourites all these years later

Yep, since that line up changed it just hasn't been the same and I have moved on.
Cant stop listening to the old stuff. to me the newer albums (port of marrow and up) are a completely different genre.. and I dont like it.
It's been an year since the last comment, thought I should give an update to this massively beautiful song.
I have listened to them for over a decade, and I don't know any of their names. But they remain my favorite band of all time. Every single song
James Mercer is a legend songsmith.
Loving the guitar sounds in this version.
this series of basement recordings is by far one of the best I've ever seen. I'm so taken aback that these aren't a more popular site on youtube
I miss this lineup
exactly, it was never the same after Jesse and the rest were fired.
Such an incredible song!
The Shins are the best band of this generation. Without a doubt.

the mixing is ridiculously good. like every nuance. it makes everything that much better. the shins are absolutely amazing
I love this song! Love their music.
I love that bands like the Shins and Death Cab that have some pretty complex sounding melodies sound almost 100% studio quality when they play live.
james!!! i love your soulful delivery...

turn the world on to what they are missing! The Shins are an extraordinary band.
Great music always by The Shins. Just watched their music video for Its Only Life...it was awesome as expected :)

James Mercer is an unquantifiably brilliant song writer.
this is fooking epic....thanx for posting...a truly great band
I cant believe an artist like lil wayne has millions of views, but this band has only 7 thousand. This world is deaf.
Great video and performance! No tricks, or unnecessary effects. Just a great band performing!

Matt Bothell This song is easy to sing, but impossible to perfect, unless you're James.
@@phoebe_ophie It's not objectively easy. Simple enough for people who have that natural range, but very high for the average male singer.
How many guys of this formation are on the actual formation of the band? Ps: sorry for bad english
I think only James Mercer remains. The Shins have always been his deal, but I think he cleaned house.
solo James, el cantante : (
I think the whole meaning is in the last words of the song. "With no connection". These ar.e
argentina escucha the shins ! still amazing

It's about lesbians who live in a small town and are teased.

@rocknroll30750 i ageee
The letterman version is way better..
But I don't care xD
I bet you think The Smiths made yuppie music too... I didn't know having talent made you a yuppie.
I'm sooooo disappointed about his voice ! He's really bad in live !
I always gravitate to old shins live... so much more better imo then new studio sounding shins live, grittiness maybe?
