The difference is that your mom probably complained your work of art on the fridge, maybe didn’t help that was not geometric and this lack of structure made it appears just like dirty in your mom perception, instead of an aesthetic experience.
Here in México we could see a beautiful exhibition of "British Landscape" some months ago. From Turner and Constable to Richard Long. One of the most memorable cultural events in my life.

I think he had a grid pencilled off
He uses a pencil on a piece of string to draw the circles after establishing the centre of the work.
