Scotty Moore said "There's two kinds of guitar players, those who play sounds and those who play notes. I play sounds". Very great description of what made guys like Scotty and Luther so famous around the world to this very day. Luther's simplicity is overshadowed by his sound, which is so totally unique and so beloved. I've been a fan for over 60 years since I first heard Luther's sound coming out of a jukebox with Johnny Cash.

Luther, the preacher's kid who "made it". Johnny & Marshall Grant acknowledged in their bios that, in the Sun days, Luther wanted to be a lead player. What he had - a sense of rhythm and intonation - was what the group needed. Cash also made mention of the fact the Luther eventually developed into a formidable picker...something the rest of us (for the most part) were denied hearing, because by that time, Cash's sparse, unvarnished sound had developed beyond a trademark and into a franchise.
