  • In this episode of the PBS Show Creative Living with Sheryl Borden, I show how to gather your fabric using the sewing machine. I use several techniques you can find within my Creative Feet Technical Guide and Workbook found at www.creativefee... these techniques are accomplished using the Creative Feet Pearls & Piping foot. To learn all of the techniques you can accomplish using this, the Satinedge foot and my Sequins & Ribbon foot - be sure to pick one up and the Instructional DVD as well. Feel free to ask questions :)

I don't get any sewing shows in my area, so these videos are invaluable to me. One request, though I guess when you're doing this show.....overhead shots of what is sewing would be great. The only thing you can really see is gathered fabric!! Can't wait to paint my machine

Yes, I agree the footage was not as good as it could have been - they got distracted by the sewing machine I think. Look through my channel and you'll find more videos on gathering and more are to come :)

Where did you get the sewing machine from?

What tension and stitch length should the machine be set on? What type of thread? How do you pull the bobbin thread up through the fabric? I've wasted sooo much thread trying to figure these things out :( I feel that these should have been discussed in this how to video. I bought the foot and can't get these results...so frustrated. And NO I do not want to buy the additional book when the foot alone cost me almost $30.

Misty Menarcheck Misty, to learn all of these and even more techniques in a better format than TV shows - I have an instructional DVD and Workbook. However, I'll do my best to explain here :) The one where you pull the bobbin thread up, I used 40wt. 100% Polyester embroidery quality Marathon Brand thread in both needle and bobbin. Cotton, Rayon and some low priced threads are weak and basically will break in the garment as well as while sewing - so if you're practicing, be sure to use the same quality thread you'll use in the garment for the same result when sewing. This foot is capable of over 20 different techniques and I also show another method of gathering on another video within my channel called Automatic Gathering. Each technique that I show on TV is harder to explain because there is a Host that alters the video/episode content. On videos I teach within my channel, I provide all data to aid you in achieving my techniques (over 178) Also, I have a Facebook Group where you're able to communicate with me easier - I'm happy to share my knowledge and assist you there as well as by calling to schedule a one on one with me (800)776-6938 Each technique shown applies to different fabric types and learning which one is best for your project is also important.
On that particular technique, shown with close up step by step visuals on my DVD - you can see better what I'm doing. I'll try to explain here... this is intended for small projects like skirt waistbands or pillow ruffles. I pulled out a long length of thread (easier to do by raising the foot or lowering the thread tension) the length of the fabric or longer because you'll be sewing over the thread - and, you should have a full bobbin because you also pull out an equal amount of bobbin thread. After doing that be sure to put your thread tension back to normal. 2) Sew a single stitch using the same CENTER needle position to lock the threads to the fabric. 3) Slide the thread under the foot's tunnel and pull toward you so that when you are facing the foot, you see the needle and bobbin thread coming out from under the tunnel's front end. 4) Raise the threads up the entire time you're sewing with a narrow zigzag stitch (2.0) 5) hold on to the threads - the tighter you hold, the more the fabric will gather with each stitch.
As you can see - with only a 10 minute spot on a show, things are missed as the things the host says are random and unrehearsed causing the show to veer in different directions. Sheryl and I had just met that day and I'll do better on future episodes. Nothing can replace my book and dvd and I know you stated you aren't interested in buying it but it's the best way to learn specific techniques used in all sewing projects. I hope this helped and welcome more questions! :) ((HUG))

That cord is called "Rat Tail" if you are wondering about the strong thread - that's Lingerie.

Nice gathers; however, the purpose of the video was to demonstrate how to achieve these gathers with the foot. Could not see what or how this was accomplished due to poor camera shooting.
