This man never got the recognition, but he was smooth with his voice, the way he played the guitar, his way of singing songs, truly one of the great musicians and singers of pop and jazz music.
+steven vega I grew up to my mom playing this guy while she did housework when I was a kid! Just wish there were back tracks of songs like these to sing to!
You don't even understand. This was an angel brought to earth for a short period of time to sing his song. I traveled by car and plane to hear him on many an occasion. This was perhaps my favorite song he performed. Can't listen without bawling. I can't believe his voice is silenced. He was a gentle and kind man. Thank you so much for posting.
I had the wonderful fortune to catch him live at The Iridium, a jazz club here in New York, approximately 5 or 6 years before he died so suddenly. I used to play his albums to death back in the late 1970's and early 1980's because he was featured on jazz stations a lot in those days. He was still very good looking when I saw him and his voice was as clear as a bell. His type of singing isn't celebrated anymore but it's so nice to read the wonderful comments on this page and to know he hasn't been forgotten. R.I.P. Kenny. Thank you for sharing your considerable gifts with us while you were here. We will always love you and you'll never be forgotten.
In 1981 when I was 16 I bought this album and remember playing it over and over. I didn't really know who Kenny Rankin was, but his voice was so beautiful and the covers were so perfect, that I was completely hypnotized by him. Since then most of my albums have disappeared, including this one. Hearing the beauty of his voice again really takes me back to that time. It also has me wondering why he didn't become a household name. It makes no sense. Rest in peace Kenny. You still have big fan in me!
I was 23 and owned this album. Played it raw and this piece was my FAVORITE!!!! I actually saw him in a theatre in Miami, Florida called the Coconut Grove Theater. What a treat!!!
This was one of my father's favorites version of this song. I get sentimental when I hear it every time because he is gone but the memories are still here remembering him listening to this. It hurts good and bad. A hauntingly beautiful rendering of a beautiful song.
I saw Kenny Rankin in concert in the late 70s at San Diego State University. He was a bit rude and crude, which I wasn't expecting, but when he started to sing, he was incredible! I didn't know what was going on with his life, but at 20 years old, I didn't realize how heavy life could get. Love Kenny's music to this day, thank you, Kenny, you are not forgotten. I still listen to the two albums I purchased back in the day. This is the best version of "When Sunny Gets Blue," among the many great artists who have recorded this beautiful song, both vocally and instrumentally.
a classic....one of my all time favorites...and just beautifully sung by the much under appreciated Kenny Rankin....."people used to love to hear her laugh...see her smile"
I remember the first time I heard Kenny Rankin He just put my soul to rest so tranquil and yet spiritually awakening I'm a huge fan of jazz singers from Sarah Vaughn to Nancy Wilson and Leon Thomas to Johnny Hartman Mose Allison Bob Dorough Sadly Missed RIP Kenny
Had one of these albums also, wore that out. Got a cassette version, wore that out too! Kenny was & is a great American Artist. I will always love his music!
I had the pleasure of meeting Kenny when he played at the Iridium in Manhattan a while back. He was an accomplished guitar player as well as a wonderful singer.
Thank you so much for sharing this song. This brought back a lot of memories when I was still young and my family was still complete. Now, I'm the only one left in this world.
Back in 76’ I worked at B of A near Hollywood & Highland. At lunchtime I’d have my cassette box with me singing with Kenny Rankin. People would walk by and say wow, you sound just like him! Those were some good days! I think he passed away in 2009. RIP in peace Kenny!
It's a shame Apple music andI tunes decided to remove this wonderful version and his rendition of this very beautiful song I cannot express how deeply saddened I and my wife are by his untimely death :( RIP Kenny Rankin, We are all "blue since your death" When Sunny gets blue is my favorite
Was this in the mid 80's? I was stationed aboard the USS Carl Vinson at NAS Alemeida. Went to a dinner theater at the Fairmont with my friends Lis and Sam.
My father bought a “Best Hits” album of Kenny Rankin on casette tape back in 1993 (it was one we could afford since CDs are expensive then), and I played the whole album side-a and side-b. I was 15, and I love the laid-back easy music (when all my friends listen to grunge, hahaha). Filipinos had a favorite Kenny Rankin song though, “What Matters Most” but most have no idea who Kenny Rankin was.
For a person who listen to heavy shit. Bands like Varials, Slaughter to prevail , and Absolution. I like this song brings me tonthe time when I used to play Sax.
When sunny gets blue Her eyes get grey and cloudy Then the rain begins to fall Pitter patter, pitter patter Love has gone So what can matter No sweet love of mine comes to call When sunny gets blue She breathes a sigh of sadness Like the wind that stirs the trees Wind that sets the leave to swayin' Like some violins are playin' Weird and haunting melodies People use to love To hear her laugh see her smile That is how she did get her name But since that sad affair She's lost her smile and she's changed her style Somehow she's not the same Memories will fade Pretty dreams will rise up While her other dreams fell through Hurry new love hurry near Kiss away these lonely tears Hold her near when sunny gets blue Hurry new love hurry near Kiss away these lonely tears Hold her near when sunny gets blue Hold her near when sunny gets blue
Kenny was one of those who cared about his tracks and the quality of his recordings. If you have the misfortune of becoming an audiophile then you'll dig deeper. Not that your pockets will be full. Broke and happy with Kenny in the lounge room.

+steven vega Love your words my friend. He is still as fresh as morning dew. We miss him so much. No one else did to us what he could do…..

Simply put he was and is a magnificent vocalist .
LOVE his interpretation!
What a voice and such command of what he can achieve with it. A massive loss,,,,RIP

I had one of my most romantic evenings
At the Fairmont San Francisco
Kenny Rankin made the
Moments......
Was this in the mid 80's? I was stationed aboard the USS Carl Vinson at NAS Alemeida. Went to a dinner theater at the Fairmont with my friends Lis and Sam.
Thx for posting....one of my favorite versions!

When sunny gets blue
Her eyes get grey and cloudy
Then the rain begins to fall
Pitter patter, pitter patter
Love has gone
So what can matter
No sweet love of mine comes to call
When sunny gets blue
She breathes a sigh of sadness
Like the wind that stirs the trees
Wind that sets the leave to swayin'
Like some violins are playin'
Weird and haunting melodies
People use to love
To hear her laugh see her smile
That is how she did get her name
But since that sad affair
She's lost her smile and she's changed her style
Somehow she's not the same
Memories will fade
Pretty dreams will rise up
While her other dreams fell through
Hurry new love hurry near
Kiss away these lonely tears
Hold her near when sunny gets blue
Hurry new love hurry near
Kiss away these lonely tears
Hold her near when sunny gets blue
Hold her near when sunny gets blue
Correction: 1st line, 2nd paragraph: No sweet loverman comes to call.
this album was produced by don costa. magic.
love this music! forever
His album should have 20million hits
Gone too soon ! Greatful to have his art forever !
For a Long time I thought Kenny Rankin was Mike Mentzer.
Love love love love.

Rankin had more vocal skill than James Taylor but he shared a vocal “photogenic” quality. Both sounded good.

At the Golden Bear, 1984

This was all back in the 70’s.
