I would just get another R6ii for full redundancy. Same camera weight for a gimbal, same button layout, same card slots, same battery, same battery life, same charger. Use the R7 as your third body.
Hmmm, good points. Jared I like this suggestion better than mine.
Another R62. Same settings , Same specks , two different lenses for quick shooting. In video it's a perfect combo for multiangle.
Two things is a must. No overheating and no 30 minute recording time limit. M6 MII as a second. Same batteries and maybe one with different lenses.
You should get a subscription to Canon Professional Services. 2 Day turn around and they send a loaner out if it will take longer than that. Also, you get free maintenance on a few lenses and bodies depending on level. Gold and up its free shipping both ways.
The thing about the R5 which I love is that you have to get CF Express Cards which can be pricy already. I would just stick with the R6mii and then use the r7 as your 3rd body. Another thing is that you're also doing professional work which would be best if you have the 2 card slots. The R8 also has a smaller battery so I would definitely just stick with the Canon r6 mk ii. But the biggest issue is that Sony is in your mind... the specs may be nice but Canon is Canon.
Good question. I have the R6Mii and since we are possibly on the cusp of the R5Mii, I’m thinking about waiting on the R5Mii and making the R6Mii my back up.
I have a Canon R5 C. Amazing video features, Amazing photography, Amazing all around camera.
Your wellcome!
Lol...love it! How to work around the battery issue? GRIP?
I just got my R6mkII today next to my existing R7. (I'm not a professional, it's more like my hobby.) I thought a lot about having a second body - and a lot of new FF lenses. I used a 70D earlier and have a lot of EF/EF-S lenses. Finally I moved ahead for a FF. Not exactly the same situation, but close (maybe upside down).
So I'd recommenced to either go for an R8 and use existing gears and stay in Canon ecosystem. Or another option to use your R7 and buy good quality (manual) wide lenses or a speedbooster. As it would be temporary solution I'd not spend a fortune on new bodies and definitely not on a new system. You'd never feel comfortable using two menu systems parallel anyways. Save your money. No need to spend it. (Or if you feel you need to burn it, I'd give you my bank account details and you can transfer :) )
Nevertheless, I now the feeling the urge for a new body, but economically and business perspective you can't really justify it.
And BTW, would you buy manual wide angle lenses, review them. More then interested in learning about your experience with them.
Just buy another R6 II. That’s the most logical choice, especially over the expense of switching to a different brand. Or try the R7 with a speed booster and some wide angle EF glass. I’m personally a R7 shooter and love everything about it so far!
I don't think I would mix camera ecosystems. I like having a system where my lenses are natively interchangeable, batteries work with all my bodies, memory cards are the same, etc., etc. It just keeps things simple and completely redundant. Why not pick up a 2nd Canon R6 II? That keeps things simple with identical functionality and identical redundancy. Two R6 II bodies and one R7. When the R5 II comes out you could always trade in the R6 II, which should still have good value on trade, and pick up the R5 II with that trade-in money to bring the price down. Say you bought a new R6 II for $2,500 and traded it for say around $1,800, then you got to use the 2nd R6 II for just $700 for the time that you own it. These are just my thoughts for what I think could be a good financial choice, the simplest redundancy set-up, while maintaining the functionality that you need. I'll admit, this is probably the most boring solution too.
May be the most boring solution but it does make a lot of sense. I like the idea of trading one r6ii in for a r5ii when it is released. I appreciate the train of thought on that.
Hey Jerry I would wait for R5 II
I’ve got both the R5C and r6ii and the R5C is a good camera but not having custom modes in video and the switch delay is faster but still annoying. Love 45mp and the video menus. The grip gives it plenty of battery. The R8 is the way to go , then back to the R.
I'm canon shooter I have R5 and R6 mark 2 and R7 and R10 and always I say they are backup for the R5 ,in real life it's always R5 is the go 1,2,3 option and no matter what I always go back to R5 ,so I will say save the money and wait R5 mark2 and this where I will put my money on
I currently shoot with an R5 and an R7. I'm more of an outdoor shooter, and I really like the lighter weight of the R7 if I have to carry something all day. I've had those same dirty thoughts about Sony because I see so many people using Sony cameras and pumping out great products. However, I can't justify new lenses just to satisfy my curiosity. Never used an R3, R8 or R6. That being said, I LOVE my R5. It is the easiest camera I have ever used. Super fast performance and when paired with L lenses it takes the sharpest photos I have ever seen. I don't foresee ever trading it for anything else. I'll use it until it dies. Another great video btw.
Thank you! I appreciate the perspective on the R5. I heard overheating went away with firmware updates. Is that your experience?
@@JaredHoyman I honestly don't shoot a lot of video with the R5. When I do, it's 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there, so it's never overheated for me even before the updates. The stills that it takes though are amazing. I generally use the R7 for video since it's a lighter set-up and works better on a gimbal. I pair the R7 with the adapted Sigma 18-35 1.8 and it makes a great video option.
I think R8 is a good option, as R5 mark II is coming so buying a expensive camera right now is just waste. Plus you can use ur current lenses & sell it once you get ur R6 mark II :) btw love ur videos
Jared, the R8 would round out your catalog of RUclips videos. It’s a great step up for all the RP owners who want to stay on a smaller body. Could be the entry level camera for a wide audience. The trend seems to be going smaller and I think why Canon chose to make the R8. Even if you send it back, I’d like to hear your take on it.
That's a good thought.
Greetings from Appleton! The obvious solution to me is to just get a second R6 mkII. Yeah it’s not as exciting as getting something different, but you said yourself that you like having redundancy for professional work.
Greetings fellow Wisco. That is a thought. Not exciting indeed, but would be consistent in quality and performance across the board.
I still have my canon 5dmark iv. Was going to sell it, but I still think it's a great camera. My backup. I love my camera R6mark 11, and it is still doing great!
Hello Jared: From your details, you already have a very capable second-body options in the R6Mk1. I too have both and use the Mk1 just as much as my other R6 - often times more. If compelled to spend money, I'd consider R5.
As for the repair of the Mk2, if you aren't a member of Canon Professional Services (CPS), you should seriously consider it.
In addition to expedited and discounted repair, free cleanings/check-ups, free overnight shipping, etc., you can also get free loaner equipment. HTH -Marc
That's good advice! I appreciate it.
Sony sensors are dust magnets !! I have owned the a7riii and currently own the a7iv. Sony is my biggest love / hate relationship with camera gear I have. I also currently own the canon R5, and have had the R. The screen resolution on the canon blows F'n doors on the sony. I cant speak for the sony a7rv screen rez, but I can pretty much bet the sensor is a dust magnet. Granted using the EF adapter protects the sensor a bit, but if you plan to do any time lapse you better make damn sure that sensor is squeaky clean ! As far as the sloppy seconds are concerned, I own the EF 24-70, EF 70-200 EF 15 fisheye and EF sigma 14mm, so those dont bother so much, but that dust magnet crap will make you hate sony. I am currently on the fence about ditching the a7iv and getting the r6mii or the r5c. Hope that helps
and as far as the battery for the R5c goes, There is no battery life on video side. Only photo side. I rented that camera earlier this year for a couple weeks. Just put a cage on the camera and use a power bank, or if handheld, get a decently long usb c cable and put the power bank in a chest pocket or harness. Its what I did.
I appreciate hearing your experience. I will say the R6II is the best full frame camera I have ever used. It's pretty amazing.
The R8 is the best option. The second best is the EOS R. Used about $1k. 30mp, card slot on the side, better LCD/evf than r8 and lcd than r6 as well.
Please do not go anywhere near the R8. Stay as far away from it as possible. I bought got one mine the day it launched. Sent it back the next week. It would overheat while recording 4k24 videos. I recorded videos 2-4 minute intervals and it wasn't even full on summer yet.
It overheated while recording a 3 minute take and the only reason I noticed was because the screen was flickering. Sent it back I bought an R6MKII. There's tons of videos on RUclips about the R8 overheating.
There's one that I don't think you mentioned and that's the R3. I've been using a 1Dx mark II for a bit now and if that's any indication of how canon pro grade bodies perform then believe me, the R3 is sure to be a beast. I know it's pricey but if you want to have the same sensor as the R6MKII and the same functionality but in this case, on steroids. R3 opens gives you a lot more videos recording format options and even on the photography end it's Definitely no slouch
That's the feedback I need to hear. Thanks for sharing your experience with the R8. That overheating along with single card slot is concerning.
I was gonna say R6 but you don't want it ^^
for the comments I'm reading, the EFS option and the R7 migth be the most cheap and best option.
Go to Sony i don't think is worth it considering you are a Canon shooter and you are looking for a second body and a temp solution ;)
Part of me regrets selling the R6 and not keeping it as a backup. I thought the same thing when I sold the EOS R. I should learn from my mistakes 😆
Great Video. My wife always says work with what you got.
If your looking for a short term fix. Use your R7 with the 10-18 or there are a few 10 an 11mm full frames primes.
Rokinon SP line EF has a 10mm F3.5 new for about $900 all metal or less US and Irix has a 11mm F4 fire fly for about $500 US it's a Platic Fantastic version. It also has a metal version which is the same optic but is I think $300 more..
I have used the Rokinon 14mm Sp f2.4 and it's a great lens as well as the Rokinon 35mm spF1.2.
Both are high quality.
If it's a short term fix try one of these options and save your money for the long term
I agree! I ended up ordering nisi 9mm rf-s and canon 10-18 ef-s. I'll do a comparison video.
I’d suggest an additional MKII Nothing better than having twin setups Color tone, frames, settings, etc it’s like your camera never left 😎
Sounds like you’re not actually ready for this decision. You might need more time but that error issue is forcing you to decide now. I think you should get the EFS 10-18 for now and use the R7. It’ll literally buy you time to think about this more (because it’s so inexpensive) and these couple of weeks will fly by. Seems to be the smartest choice considering all the different variables of this next backup camera and what you want it to be. It’s the boring choice and the smart choice but not very fun or exciting. My 2 cents.
I appreciate the feedback. That is the most practical route and the way I'm leaning. The R7 is a pro camera with an aps-c sensor and has proven itself in my bag for the last yr as reliable. I do wish canon would have released an aps-c RF ultrawide by now, but EF will fill in the gap.
I own the R3, R6M2, and the R8. The R8 is a fantastic camera! Battery life isn’t great. You will need at least 3 maybe 4 batteries, but the autofocus is superb and it’s easy to edit the photos to look like the ones on the R6M2 since they share the same sensor. I did purchase the grip for it to have a better feel in my hand, but other than that I really like it because it is capable. As for the one card slot, I don’t remember the last time I had a card fail? I usually never skimp out when it comes to cards though. Save yourself some money and get the R8. Best of luck!
Just get another R6 MKII. Simple. Redundancy. You still get to work.
R5C, I couldn't wait for the list.
😆 love the response. Do you have one and if so, what's your experience like?
@@JaredHoyman it is my next Camera, unless blackmagic drops something are Christmas.
R8, it’s the same sensor
I'm a canon guy. I have yet to try sony. I honestly would like to one day but if I were you I'd try to get a cheap wide lens for now with the R7. Then it's rumored that the R5 ii will get announced early next year. I would get that. I'm hoping to be able to. I currently have the R7. I'd like to have a full frame with it.
That would be the most practical and economic way to go. The R7 is already reliable so I know it will perform and fill in the gaps when I need it. Thanks for the comment.
@@JaredHoyman yeah thats very true. Thank you for the great videos!
Buy the R3, I’ve had my pro body Canon cameras for 16 years shot in the pouring rain never a problem. Buy once cry once.
Hahaha....that is a good one. I hope you don't mind me stealing that sang. Better than "buy nice or buy twice". I assume you own the r3 then. Tell me what you love about it in photos and in video?
@@JaredHoyman yes, I have the R3, I mainly shoot photo. Back in 2004 I started with a 1D Mark II then purchased the 1DS mark II in 2005. as mentioned, these cameras are totally dependable made for every day use. The reason I purchased the R3 was totally due to upgraded performance of the sensor. Canon’s. backlit double stacked sensor is undoubtably the fastest light catching sensor on the market today. You can re-search the Internet for videos on performance of photo and video You’ll see that at ISO 12,800 it has the least amount of grain of any manufacture. So, in my opinion, we’re catching light and this one does it the best.
Another suggestion if you have a pro shop near you rent a couple models to see what works best for you.
Nice video,
I'm using 6D mark 2 + system EF lens. I'm going to buy new camera (canon).
Could you give me advice which one I should to buy?
I take a photo and video too. My budget about $2000~ $2500 :(
And which lens I need to buy first for RF system lens ?
I had:
- Canon 70-200 F2.8 non IS
- Sigma 35art
- Canon 16-35 F4 IS L
- Sigma 70 art marco
- Canon 85 1.8
- Canon 50mm stm
Thank you and keep going your jobs :P
If your budget is that for just a camera body do the r6ii but if it’s for everything you can find a used R6 for $1500 or so. Start out adapting your ef lenses until you can expand into the rf mount. The 50 1.8 rf is very reasonable. Check out the affiliate links below.
Is the error with the canon batteries or the small rig batteries? Just curious
No. Its been doing this for a couple of months and I was only using canon batteries. I may bring it into my local canon dealer and see if they have any advice before I ship it out.
