- ENG: A fire alarm at Martin Place train station causes a response from Fire Rescue New South Wales and Rail Fire and Emergency. From City of Sydney Fire station (001) the Runner and Rescue pumps respond. Shortly followed by the brand new Volvo pump 099A from the Rail Fire and Emergency fire station at Central train station. This beautiful pump has not been captured before and is using rumbler siren to cross the intersection

yeah QFES signed a contract to get a whole heap of the electric volvos but they still are a while away

i dont know how true this is, but i heard something that it was easier and cheaper for them to use that.

OK, but seriously, a few observations:
1. The random Christmas tree warning light display is great if you want to keep motorists guessing as to the appliance distance and rate and direction of movement. Also helpful if you want to impose an increased (often subliminal) workload on motorists who need to figure out what is happening, with the light flashes separated in time randomly simply distracting from each other and reducing the potential impact while destroying spatial information.
The alternating flash pattern is also not so good. With different colours it makes any spatial information ambiguous (different colours appear differently in intensity and conspicuity, making reliable depth perception and displacement impossible).
The lack of large high-intensity intersection clearing warning lights (synchronized with the other lamps, as below) is also a worry.
Answer: follow the FRV excellent practice of all warning lights operating in unison, synchronized to flash in alternating symmetrical colours. Absolute best practice for impact, easy of tracking of movement (axial and angular displacement) and simplicity of identification, with consequent reduction of observing motorist workload.
2. Livery has similar problems. 5 different colours in various shapes and dispositions fail to outline the shape of the appliance; again, just to make it harder for drivers to quickly and unambiguously identify the appliance in a complex road scene, or in poor light.
If you must have checking, avoid the silly Sillitoe bands (named after the word 'silly', obviously) and, if you must have checks, use Battenburg checking with much larger checks. The yellow, presumably reflective, band on the rear side is excellent, only it needs to be duplicated at the bottom of the side and on the cab sides and front.
3. The Railway appliance has similar problems to those mentioned above, bet even worse livery, that would be a great camouflage with odd blazes of colour not reflecting the appliance outline.Looks more like an art-student effort than a serious piece of perceptional design.
4. Sirens? They may sound impressive, and may in fact be impressive, but the only real test for sirens is their traffic clearing effect. I wonder if anyone has researched this and reported on the superior mode. I must say, in the RFS truck I drove many decades ago we had installed a horn from a diesel goods locomotive: best warning alarm ever! It simply blew traffic out of the way. Seemed to almost terrify motorists into instant action. But, that aside, acoustics ain't my area, its visual perceptional design which I studied at Uni.
