Process, not perfection. So liberating! In music, and in life. Up until 2022, I had written a handful of songs that I had let loose in the world. In 2023, I booked a date in my church and promised to have a full concert of songs based on the seven things Jesus said on the cross. By the end of 2023, I counted 11 songs finished. This was the year I turned 50. Moral of the story: it’s too late when you’re dead, but if you’re alive, you can still grow. Thanks!

Damn, man. This is wisdom I needed to hear today. Been playing for 33 years. My skill, interest and focus has risen and fallen over the years, sometimes dependent upon who I’m playing with. I’m not in a band now and learning from tabs on RUclips has brought me to a higher peak and given me much more joy than wrestling with herding cats together onto a stage. Thanks for your heart and your voice.

The tail end of this reminded me of a compelling experience some years ago. Bought a concert-style acoustic guitar back in '07 that inspired a whole bunch of new original music. One of those pieces further inspired an orchestral version, which came together while studying Orchestration at BerkleeOnline. One day an acquaintance of my spouse listened to it and liked it a lot, asked for a copy to put on her iPod. Some weeks or months later I learned that her father passed away. She eventually described that listening to that particular piece had provided her and her mother a measure comfort in their grief. This was certainly never my intent in writing the music, but it taught me that you can never know how something you create will impact someone else.

Wow dude, this is GOLD! Really, "Maybe it's ok that you are where you are right now". Wow! I am a drummer turned bassist and when I started playing the bass 4 years ago I started a journal, my bass journey journal and the good/bad/ugly gets written in it and I took this quote and put it in! It's that valuable to me. So THANK YOU. One thing I'd like to say is your right, there is so much emphasis on comparing oneself to others and to living up to some standard whether it's academic or social or both. I feel the KEY is to find your true self; who you are. That unique voice inside and manifest that as the unique and individual bassist that you are. SO many people spend their lives trying to be someone else and they never truly find themselves. That's sad because we are here to bring our unique piece to the world. Thanks again for doing what you do, it is greatly appreciated! 🙂

Thank you for the message. It's easy to watch all of the technical wizards out there making content and feel down about your own level of accomplishment. The reality is that I've never pursued virtuoso ability as a bass player. I always pursued my own voice. Sure, that includes becoming a more competent player. But, being the fastest player with all the techniques has not been the goal. It's good to be reminded of that and hear this kind of validation.

If this isnt a wake up call (More like splashing a gallon of water onto me and slapping me awake) then idk what is. Eerie that you made this not very long ago and made its way to my feed as Im currently reevaluating myself as a bass player and wanting to improve and put myself out there. Ive been stuck in this “limbo” of being good enough but not knowing enough to keep up with everyone else around me. Im too comfortable and I cant be if I want to be a better musician. This is a real encouragement to do just that and reach the potential I wasted over the years.

Ive been playing bass for 6 months. Before i picked up bass i played guitar but was never very serious with it. Bass inspired me to practice and play. Now i practice something every day, often a couple hours or more just getting lost in songs and technique. Ive always loved music but now i love playing. Thanks Bass.

At least twice in my life what got me out of "bass block" is walking away from it. I've taken myself off the gigging list for short periods. In both cases it was only a few weeks ( that I can remember) but, coming back to bass, I had a lot more clarity....and technique challenges that were previously difficult I could all of a sudden do with relative ease

Don't ever knock being sincere and kind to others as you have in your videos, at 63 I'm just now getting back into guitar from about a 40 year absence and I've darn near forgotten everything, but I also was thinking about playing bass in church and know nothing, shoot I'm having to remind myself about the old Every Good Boy Does Fine and FACE and that's about the extent of my theory other than maybe knowing the circle of 5th, so I just enrolled in your Bass course based on your videos here and I can't jump in til later in the week, but I'm looking forward to it.@@philipconradmusic

Thanks Phil, love the channel. I've been dabbling on bass since the pandemic started but I only try and figure out mostly punk rock songs with a pick. I kind of know the fretboard by writing it down on a fretboard sheet I made but it takes me a bit to think about it when I try and translate it to the actual bass. This year my goal is to try and get better at learning the fretboard on the actual bass instead of on paper and start practicing my first few scales, C Major and A minor.

great insight and advice =) I have been playing guitar for almost 24 years at this point and I often find myself flopping between being very happy with my current place musically and my growth, and then feeling lazy and unmotivated and starting to comparing myself to other guitarists. I have simply tried my best to always put that aside and focus on just creating stuff.
For me today that next step that I know I've been avoiding is getting better at video editing. (or really just getting the motivation to actually sit down and do it) I had enough ambition to record the music, mix it, polish it, and then film the video - but then that timeline and all that footage just makes me overwhelmed.
But There was once upon a time a day when learning a new song or recording music felt the same.
Thank you for your encouraging words today.
Now time to go do some editing. =)

Guitar players, I have a tip. If you've been playing in standard tuning all of your musical life or career and are stuck like what Mr. Conrad is explaining here, tune your guitar to DADGAD and unlock new ways of playing. It sounds BEAUTIFUL too, ladies and gents. You can solo and play scales with open strings to to create a more melodic sound. And no, DADGAD is not just used in Kashmir by Led Zeppelin

In the first video you looked like a guy I went to High School with...
and in this one you look a little like Kurt Russell in "Tombstone" Lol
Kidding aside, those are great ideas that you mentioned, as a matter of fact I picked up the bass as my second instrument, even though I'm nowhere near done learning the first one, the guitar. It doesn't matter, because I feel they compliment each other and learning music is learning music.
I'll be dropping in on some Thursdays to see the progress.

I just watched Whipping Post, well yesterday, but that shit kicked major ass. At 56, I live by those two challenges. I study songwriting on the RUclips machine with many of your friends Guthrie Trapp, Rhett Shull, Tim Pierce, Rick Beato and so many more and I'll check you out on Thursdays. I also perform at open mics, usually pairing one of my 5 songs with a popular standard all on my acoustic. That keeps it fresh and out of ruts for me. I agree with your good advice, Philip.

Phillip, I like your playing And I really needed to hear what you had to day here. I'm recovering from a stroke, with lots of fine motor challenges. I'm also a beginning bass player. I was only able to practice 5 minutes a day at first, now I can do an hour of practice, but I still stink. I'm awkward with both hands, but I love the instrument and have for decades. I've been listening to good music for decades, and have seen most of the greats live, Duck Dunn, Steve Swallow , Jack Bruce, Jack Cassidy. I'm so slow and clumsy at this point, it's disheartening. You good words make me want to go out to the studio right now, but I'll have to wait an hour or two to be kind to my neighbors.

I may have to push past my social anxiety when it comes to talking to people I don't know and do some calling/emailing to get us in front of people.
I also need to rediscover my passion to practice regularly. I got out of the habit and I can tell. Hopefully with some other things shifting around in my life, I can get it back to a daily thing.

Because talking about being scared even as an intermediate player, that's something I want to improve on this year. And there is not many good tips out there, even on SBL paywall courses.

I went for my very 1st bass lesson earlier this week and during that 30 mins, I didn't get to even pull out my bass out or talk about what I was looking for. I left there choked and vowed to just hide at home. 3 days later you come out with this video. Thank you???

I took guitar lessons for 2 years when I was 11 - 13 and though my teacher was a very nice girl from the neighborhood, who could play well herself, she could never gauge what my real progress was or give suggestions on how I should improve. I put the instrument down for over 30 years.
I started again in 2018 and guess what...I can play and I am a solid rhythm player and I am very satisfied.
Find a new teacher. Don't let someone else's lack of tutoring ability stop you.

I can't get any gear, recording equipment, or pay for studio time. Family, work, setback after setback, responsibilities, life. Fate seems to be telling me that just because I might be good at something doesn't mean I can do anything with it. It's enough to make me want to quit playing completely. Ok, whiney rant over.
