I would argue that Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle were actually the first ones that broke that celling. I guess because they had a 9 million budget film, is still considered a small budget film. But when it came it it was huge
I would say the same thing, to me it was a good production movie and funny.
I still remember how they had that song Paper Planes in the promos too

That first Cheech and Chong movie was from Paramount and it had a plot plus it was very successful. Also maybe Half Baked and Friday didnt make as much as Pineapple Express but they were both just as big in pop culture and both were slick studio comedy's.

Friday After Next had the highest box office at 57mil. Half what Pineapple Express made. Pineapple Express OPENING WEEKEND grossed as much as Friday's whole run.
This proves the American Dream is still alive and kicking. The problem is, and I think it's getting worse, in the last 10 or 15 years, there's no middle ground when it comes to "making it in Hollywood". It's either zero or it's 100%. And it kind of sucks. That's why he have Florence Pugh, Timothy Chamaliet (and now Jacob Elordi & Barry Keoghan) showing up in EVERYTHING. The operating system behind the industry is so ruthless that, all of a sudden, Tom Holland & Zendaya seem to be so far away from their heyday as Robert Pattison and Kristen Stewart do. It's THAT wild.
In college people loved the Cheech & Chong movies. Watching Seth's movies and Jack Black and other crazy potheads in the 2000s it's a miracle I didn't become one myself.
Bro, I absolutely love Pineappme Express, easily a top 5 comedy of all time for me (I was born in ‘94) but I’ve never considered this an action film in any way shape or form, I know it had the car chase and a few other scenes like that but just no, lol it’s a comedy through and through, with a few high stakes moments.

Hot take: It started with Animal House and Seth took the helm of the slow decline of American responsibility. It’s like we’re all rich kids that love to party too much and don’t want to do real work or invent anything. We just want to do drugs and tell stupid penis jokes.
I think that my favorite movie of Seth’s is knocked up. That’s the one that sticks out mostly for me. Of course he has plenty of other movies that are crazy funny. I think I’m going to have to watch pineapple express again. Maybe I didn’t get through the whole movie when watching it because it felt like the first 20 minutes or so seemed kind of a boring but I’ll give it another chance if I can find the movie and watch it all the way through.
The 40 year old virgin of course was hilarious and epic, but I can’t really give credit to Seth for that movie because it really didn’t star him and I don’t think he was the one who came up with the idea.
